(New York, NY – July 24, 2023) – Newly-elected Southampton Village Mayor William Manger Jr. will step out on Thursday, July 27 at 10 am to lend a hand as the Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) kicks off its 5th annual Week of Hope summer tradition in Southampton.

During the Week, stores throughout Southampton display a large, yellow HOPE balloon (environmentally safe and recyclable) in front of their doors, transforming sidewalks into a sea of sunshine to raise mental health awareness.

Over 100 businesses are part of the Week of Hope, including Loveshack Fancy, Ovando, Poupette St. Barth, and Veronica Beard, a major HDRF sponsor.  The mayor will join HDRF Founder and Chair Audrey Gruss, a longtime Southampton resident, to place the first balloon in front of the Veronica Beard store (84B Main Street, Southampton) at 10 am.

“I’m delighted Mayor Manger will continue the tradition started by his predecessors to support this mental health campaign,” said Gruss.  “Southampton is leading the way on Long Island by embracing mental health, one of the most important health issues of our day.”

Of course, after Mayor Manger and Audrey Gruss set the first balloon, there are hundreds more to go! For that, HDRF will get the help of a cadre of teen athletes from Southampton High School and their track coach Eddie Arnold, who will spend the morning setting up the rest of the balloons around the village.

“We’re so excited to be part of this effort,” said Arnold.  “This is a festive and fun way for the youth in our community to be advocates for a critical cause that is sadly very prevalent in teens right now.”

Along with the HOPE balloon display, participating stores will have special hand-outs provided by HDRF with the latest information on depression in the U.S. and how to spot signs and symptoms.

The Week of Hope began in 2018 to serve as the lead-up to HDRF’s signature summer event, the Race of Hope 5K to Defeat Depression.  This year the Week culminates in the 8th Annual Southampton Race of Hope on Sunday, August 6 at 8:30 AM around Lake Agawam.  The Race attracts over 500 participants from the tri-state area and beyond to unite as a community and raise mental health awareness and fund depression research.

The Co-Grand Marshals of the Race of Hope are Audrey Gruss and Arthur Dunnam, who is an HDRF Advisory Board member and resides in East Hampton.

The Teen Grand Marshals of the Race are Grier Hammond Henchy, the 17-year-old daughter of Brooke Shields, and Hayden Lucas, an NYC high school senior and leader of the newly formed HDRF Teen Task Force.

Gruss said: “As we launch our Week and Race of Hope, we recognize the staggering statistics around depression and suicide in the United States. HDRF is working tirelessly to find solutions by focusing on education and research into novel treatments.”

ABOUT HOPE FOR DEPRESSION RESEARCH FOUNDATION (HDRF)

HDRF was founded in 2006 by philanthropist Audrey Gruss in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. The mission of the HDRF is to spur the most innovative brain research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and suicide.

The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, and yet conventional medications today are outdated and do not fully work for 50% of patients.  HDRF is working tirelessly to improve the mental health landscape for every American.  The Foundation has provided more than $50 million through over 200 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented. Currently, HDRF has a potential new class of medication in pilot clinical trials at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Columbia University, and Stanford University. HDRF is also funding clinical trials into other novel therapeutics and diagnostic tests at Johns Hopkins, University of San Diego, and the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

New York, NY – July 21, 2022 – Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s Week of Hope will return this year and launch on Wednesday, July 27 at 11 am in Southampton Village, New York outside of AKRIS (52 Jobs Ln., Southampton, NY 11968).

Over 50 local business owners including Douglas Elliman, J. McLaughlin and Michael Kors will display two-foot-wide environmentally safe and reusable bright yellow statement balloons at their front doors, symbolizing hope and their unwavering commitment to raising mental health and depression awareness.

The Week of Hope was created by Southampton resident Audrey Gruss’ Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF,) a leading non-profit dedicated to fighting depression through research and education.  The launch will be hosted by Mrs. Gruss and Southampton Village Mayor Jesse Warren.

“Our Southampton community has always had its finger on the pulse of important issues facing our world,” said Mayor Warren. “Mental health is at the top of our national cultural conversation, and we are proud to partner with Hope for Depression Research Foundation to further awareness.”

The Week of Hope started in 2018 to herald HDRF’s signature summer event, the Race of Hope 5K to Defeat Depression. The campaign was quickly embraced by the shops throughout the Village, but has been on hiatus ever since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.  It now returns to Southampton from July 27 through August 6, with the Race of Hope slated for Sunday, August 7 around Lake Agawam.  Audrey Gruss is a Co-Grand Marshal of the Race with HDRF Board member and East Hampton resident Arthur Dunnam.

Audrey Gruss said: “We are thrilled and gratified to see Southampton Village once again embrace the Week of Hope as we emerge from the pandemic.   Mental health awareness has become more important than ever, and HDRF has a long track record of leadership in this arena.”

Gruss pointed out recent studies showing that two in five American adults report symptoms of anxiety and depression since the pandemic. Studies also show that over forty percent of teenagers struggle with constant sadness and hopelessness, and these staggering statistics seem to only be going up.

On Sunday, August 7th, the last day of the Week of Hope, Audrey Gruss, Arthur Dunnam, and Celebrity Grand Marshal Candace Bushnell will lead the seventh annual Race of Hope around Lake Agawam at 8:30 AM. The race attracts over 500 participants from the tri-state area and beyond to unite as a community and raise mental health awareness and fund depression research. 100% of proceeds from the Race will fund groundbreaking research into the root causes of depression in the brain and new and better treatments. Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in April 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Today, HDRF is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research and public education. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, but despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. The mission of the HDRF is to fund innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and suicide.

To date, HDRF has provided more than $40 million through over 125 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented.

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

•          HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.

•          Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.

•          The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.

•          In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of nine leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.

•          HDRF has invested over $40 million in advanced depression research to date.

About Depression

•          In the United States, depression affects over 20-million adults each year – that is one in 10 adults.

•          Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 11 minutes – over 47,000 people per year.

•          Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

•          Depression costs society $210 billion annually – 60% of which represents reduced efficiency at work and costs related to suicide.

The Crisis in Research and Treatment

•          Over 30% of those diagnosed with depression do not respond to existing treatments.

•          In 35 years since the introduction of Prozac and other SSRI anti-depressants, there has been almost no change in the treatment of depression, just tinkering with existing approaches.

•          Although depression is one of the most serious and prevalent conditions in the US, it is ranked 77th (out of 250) in the amount of federal funding it receives.

•          Most of the major pharmaceutical companies have discontinued brain research.

What Makes HDRF Different

•          The Depression Task Force represents the most innovative approach to neuroscience research today.

•          The Task Force has created an unprecedented research plan with each member executing a piece of the plan in their own laboratories.  By avoiding well-worn paths of research, the team is shaking up the field for answers that will finally lead to new treatments for depression.

•          They share results in real-time at a centralized data bank. This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research. This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.

Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s Palm Beach Event to Raise Research Funds and Awareness

Sunday, January 27, 2019

Mother Nature tried but failed to deter hundreds of intrepid souls who came out in pouring rain and hurricane wind for the Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) Inaugural Palm Beach Race of Hope 5K on Sunday, January 27, 2019.

While a nearby state fair saw a rare closing for weather, more than 300 participants of all ages gathered at 8AM at Palm Beach’s Royal Poinciana Plaza to walk or run the 5K Race and take a stand for depression awareness. The crowd included Inside Edition‘s Deborah Norville, Martin Gruss, Bill Bone, Michael Donnell, Tatiana and Campion Platt, Felicia Taylor, Carlos Morrison, and Tom and Clelia Zacharias.

The 3.1-mile Race began at The Royal Poinciana Plaza, the event’s lead sponsor, and continued along the North Lake Trail and through the streets of Palm Beach. Along the way, participants were greeted by signs with words of encouragement from celebrities, including Anderson Cooper, Lorraine Bracco and Brooke Shields, who have been honored by HDRF for speaking out about depression.

Hope was in abundant supply as everybody wore bright tech shirts and matching caps in HDRF’s signature sunshine yellow. The USA Track and Field-sanctioned event raised over $275,000 to fund groundbreaking research into the causes of depression in the brain and new and better treatments.

Meanwhile, just across the bridge in West Palm Beach, the South Florida Fair was closed for weather for the first time in over ten years.

Speaking from the starting line, HDRF Founder and Chair Audrey Gruss said, “There is a native American saying that says, ‘Anybody who thinks sunshine creates happiness has never danced in the rain. Depression is the number-one reason in the world for disability, and the leading cause of suicide.”

Audrey Gruss and Scott Synder_Credit Capehart Photography

Scott Snyder, who along with Audrey Gruss was a Race Co-Grand Marshal, then added: “So we want to thank you all for coming out to dance in the rain with us today.  Our research is leading to discoveries that can turn the tide on depression and suicide in this country.”

Following the race, Audrey Gruss and Scott Snyder presented medals for best times in various age categories. John Schilkowsky won the best time in the Adult Male category, Stephanie Pezzullo won best time in the Adult Female category, and Dylan Pitchford took home the Youth award. Gruss then presented awards to the top individual fundraiser Trish Glowacki, and an award for Top Fundraising TeamSister Sledge, which included Trish Glowacki, Kimberly Bitterman and Kristina McCooey.

Momentum for the Race grew in the run-up with the Week of Hope – an initiative that launched on January 18 when 40 business owners at The Royal Poinciana Plaza placed a two-foot wide yellow statement balloon by their front door to symbolize hope and their commitment to changing the statistics around depression.

The message was amplified by activities held throughout the week. SoulCycle hosted a Week of Hope ride and Michael Kors Collection hosted an exclusive shopping event where 20% of proceeds were donated HDRF.

The Race of Hope comes to Palm Beach Race as part of a multi-city expansion after three years of success in Southampton, NY. The next Race of Hope will take place in New York City on April 7, 2019. It will then continue in Southampton in the summer.

The Race of HOPE was supported by its Committee: Donna and William Acquavella, Julie Araskog, Mashi and Manucher Azmudeh, Bruce Bierman and William Secord, Robert Bishop, James Borynackand Adolfo Zaralegui, Janet and J.J. The mission of the HDRF is to fund innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder and suicide.

To date, HDRF has provided more than $30-million through over 125 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented.

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in past decade:

  • HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.
  • Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.
  • The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.
  • In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of seven leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real time, at the HDRF Data Center.

About Depression:

  • In the United States, depression affects more than 20-million adults each year – that is one in ten adults.
  • Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 12 minutes – over 41,000 people per year.
  • Depression is the number one cause of disability worldwide.
  • Depression costs society $210-billion annually – 60% of which represents reduced efficiency at work and costs related to suicide.

The Crisis in Research and Treatment

  • More than 50% of those diagnosed with depression do not respond to existing treatments.

They are not going down well-worn paths of research. They have identified major challenges in the field and are laser focused on the areas where the field is stuck.
  • They share results in real time at a centralized data bank. This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research. This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.
