]]>On Saturday August 5th, 2017, lace up your sneakers and join Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) as they set out on the second annual Walk of Hope + 5K Run to Defeat Depression. The USA Track and Field sanctioned event will raise awareness and funds for advanced depression research with every dollar raised going directly to research.
Author Jay McInerney will serve as Grand Marshal and HDRF’s Founder Audrey Gruss will lead participants of runners, walkers and all supporters of all ages on a beautiful route around Lake Agawam in Southampton Village. The event is high-spirited, family-focused, inspiring and fun. The first 500 participants will receive a keepsake event hat; and prizes will be awarded for best time in different age categories as well as for the top individual fundraiser and top fundraising team.
Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in April 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Today, HDRF is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, but despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. The mission of the HDRF is to fund innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder and suicide. To date, HDRF has provided more than $20 million through over 125 grants for accelerated breakthrough depression research that promises to lead to new and better medications and treatments. An intimate group of supporters including Frick Collection Trustees Bernard Selz and Melinda Martin Sullivan, Frick Young Fellows, and friends gathered at the historical landmark for cocktails and small bites. Mr. Wardropper welcomed guests by saying that he lives “in the shadow of the Dakota so the event theme of ‘across the park and into the past,’ is my everyday life as I walk across the park and between the Dakota and the Frick.” Rachel Himes, Education Assistant, The Frick Collection, then gave a brief history of the building, describing the Upper East Side at the turn of the century as an open and more sparsely inhabited area and noting that “Adelaide, Henry Frick’s wife, would recall how she could hear boats passing on the East River from her home,” something impossible to imagine in today’s modern metropolitan landscape.

Toby and Larry then gave an insightful talk about the history of the Dakota, and their personal relationship with “the iconic building that so few have a chance to peek inside.” They spoke about the lore and urban myths of the building, and the notable residents, and John Lennon who had influenced the rich tapestry of New York’s artistic and creative landscape. They shared anecdotes about their experiences growing up in the building, saying “every time you walked into the building, you felt its historical significance,” before introducing Leonard Bernstein’s children, Alexander Bernstein and Jamie Bernstein, who had lived in the apartment before them. They then took questions from guests, before Amory McAndrew, Chair of the Young Fellows Steering Committee, closed the discussion by thanking guests and raising a toast to the hosts.

The Dakota, also known as Dakota Apartments, is a cooperative apartment building located on the northwest corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Built in 1884, it is one of Manhattan’s most prestigious and exclusive cooperative residential buildings. The Dakota is famous as the home of former Beatle John Lennon from 1973 to his death outside the building in 1980.
Internationally recognized as a premier museum and research center, The Frick Collection is housed in the former residence of Henry Clay Frick on Fifth Avenue and 1 East 70th St. One of New York City’s few remaining Gilded Age mansions, it was built in 1914 and provides a tranquil environment for visitors to experience masterpieces by artists such as Bellini, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Gainsborough, Goya, and Whistler.

The Young Fellows are a dynamic group of individuals between the ages of 21 and 45 years old who enjoy insider access to The Frick Collection. Each season, Young Fellows gain valuable insight into the Frick’s extraordinary permanent collection and special exhibitions through a series of private viewings and gallery talks especially for young supporters.
