Where Hollywood Meets Art History appeared first on NY UNDRESSED.
]]>Our gallery director Charles Saffati and his associate Claude Pardo will host an artist reception on October 11th at their Fifth Avenue location (689 5th Avenue) to celebrate the new exhibition.
Bonnie Lautenberg’s ARTISTICA! Where Hollywood Meets Art History features over 85 works created over the span of five years, connecting key art pieces to classic films made in the same year. Bonnie explores how both art forms influence one another.
Select pieces from this exhibition was shown at the Boca Raton Museum of Art in 2022 and at the Jewish Museum of Florida in Miami Beach.
In 1993, Bonnie Lautenberg fell in love with photography as she captured the historic signing of the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Accord. This photograph, along with countless other political photographs from Lautenberg, has been exhibited widely exhibited over the years. She is currently working on a book of her 25 years of political photography.
Mrs. Lautenberg has successfully sold and exhibited her photography for a number of years and has received critical praise throughout her career. Her photographs, with subjects from presidents to rock stars, are included in both private and museum collections, and she has exhibited internationally.
An esteemed philanthropist, Mrs. Lautenberg has been recognized by numerous nonprofits for her meaningful contributions. Earlier this year, she was honored by the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation. ]]>The post Robert Cenedella’s, ‘So Many Roads (Greatful Dead 1965-Forever),’ highlighted in Carlton Fine Arts Ltd opening, “Rock and Roll Art” appeared first on NY UNDRESSED.
]]>Also on display were Andy Warhol’s Mick Jagger (1975), Kelly Sullivan’s Rock and Roll Voodoo (2015), and other works by artists highlighting the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones.
Those in attendance that evening included Peter Thomas Roth, Linjie Deng, Cathy Soref, Dusty Wright, Terry Hill, Miranda Lee, Margie Beck, Jean Ziperski, Sara Beth Shrager, Shelby Hannan, & Nicole and Natalie Meir.
Although the Grateful Dead started their storied career as a band in 1965, Artist Robert Cenedella only recently boarded the proverbial ‘bus’ as a Deadhead. In this massive interpretation of the band’s journey across the years, So Many Roads, also known as Grateful Dead 1965-Forever, leaves your eyes scrolling from one panel to the next, all while pondering about the deeper meaning behind all the imagery within the painting. Just like Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow were able to do with their lyrics, Cenedella paints a story that is open to interpretation and resonates with the viewer however they deem fit in this Deadhead’s utopia.
In honor and celebration of Jerry Garcia, on what would have been his 80th birthday, So Many Roads will remain on display to the public until August 1st, 2022. On August 2nd, So Many Roads will exit the Rock & Roll Art exhibition due to prior filming obligations for an upcoming documentary; however, the 26″ x 39″ Fotiou Framed Digital Archival Print will remain in its place at Carlton Fine Arts until August 12th. Exhibition hours are Monday – Thursday: 10 AM – 6 PM; Friday: 10 AM – 4 PM; Saturday: Closed; Sunday: 11 AM – 6 PM. ABOUT ROBERT CENEDELLA
Robert Cenedella was born in Milford, Massachusetts in 1940. He received his formal education from The High School of Music & Art in New York, and from The Art StudentsLeague of New York. From 1988-2020, he inherited the George Grosz Chair at The League where he was invited to teach his Life Drawing Class and a Painting Workshop. Following a definitive tradition in art, like Brueghel, Daumier, Hogarth, and Grosz before him, Cenedella has devoted his art to chronicling the changing rituals and myths of contemporary American society.
In the last 40 years, Cenedella has amassed considerable international praise as well as inclusion in numerous public and private collections. His commissions include works for the famed Bacardi International and Absolut VODKA, a theater piece for actor Tony Randall, two murals of historical significance for Le Cirque 2000 Restaurants in New York and Mexico City, and most recently a visual jam to commemorate the history of the Grateful Dead.
In September 1985, Cenedella exhibited at the Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris, a show sponsored by Mr. Jacques Chirac, then mayor of Paris. In 1988, he held a one-man show at Saatchi & Saatchi’s headquarters in New York, and in 1990, he was included in the prestigious Amnesty International Exhibition in SoHo, New York. In December 1994, he had a major retrospective at the Galerie Am Scheunenviertel in Berlin, Germany, which was a tribute to his former mentor and ran concurrently with the George Grosz Centennial Exhibition at the Berlin National Gallery. That same year, Cenedella’s concept of selling shares of stock in his painting 2001 – A Stock Odyssey was disclosed in a New York Times feature article. The idea prompted Leo Castelli, the SoHo gallery owner, who once compared the art boom of the 1980s to the rise of junk bonds, to call the experiment “a conceptual work of art.” Cenedella was also featured in Norbert Bunge’s award-winning documentary film George Grosz in America: Life’s Fine in the Labyrinth presented at the Berlin Film Festival in 1995.
From 1995 to 2000, Robert Cenedella exhibited and lectured around the United States. From March to May 2003, a full retrospective of the artist’s political works was sponsored by The Nation Institute. This exhibit, The Nation Hangs Cenedella, was held at the New York executive offices of The Nation magazine and covered subjects ranging from the Selma riots to the preemptive war on Iraq. It was the first exhibition given to an American artist by The Nation. On March 11, 2004, Cenedella unveiled “The Easel Painting Revival” at Le Cirque 2000. In the spring of 2005, Robert Cenedella had a solo exhibition at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, and conducted a lecture entitled: “WHAT isn’t ART.”
Cenedella’s art and life was the subject of a book, “The American Artist as Satirist,” by M. Kay Flavell. Cenedella was also the protagonist in Art Bastard, a historical documentary film on his life and work, which was released in the spring of 2016 by Concannon Productions, Inc. to critical acclaim. It was written and directed by Victor Kanefsky, produced by Chris T. Concannon, and edited by Jim MacDonald.
Robert Cenedella maintained a studio for 60 years in Tribeca and Midtown Manhattan; In August 2020, Cenedella moved from New York City to Maine with his wife, Liz, where he paints full-time. During the summer, Cenedella spends his time on his private island in Maine in a rustic cabin he personally built many years ago. He uses this time for reflection and inspiration. He is currently working on a coffee table book that revolves around his art and life story, which is due to be released in 2023, titled Robert Cenedella | 60 Years of American Art.

]]>This year, Linjie will be exhibiting some of his key pieces from his Asian Art SPA series, which Deng created after he was attacked at a New York subway station at 86th street. His attacker referred to him as f**king yellow while violently shoving him to the ground. Reclaiming the Asian slur, Deng created three works that are all yellow, paying respect to the pain the Asian community has felt during this time. One of the works spotlighted will be Fortune Cookie, in which the fortune itself states “Stop Asian Hate. Start American Love.”
Deng will also feature signature works from his other series including Proud and Humble from his Yin-Yang series, a selection of contemporary calligraphy works consisting of a set of mutually opposing and coexisting words: freedom and hope, you and me, me and we, proud and humble. These reflect the different reactions and perspectives of Eastern and Western cultures throughout the last few years.
Other key works highlighted will include Falling in Love from 2021 and Kiss Me, Kill Me, from 2021. Currently, Deng is in the process of creating a selection of new pieces at his studio that he will unveil at SCOPE.
Linjie Deng is a multi-talented conceptual artist in New York City. The 29-year-old artist moved to NYC in 2015 after graduating from art college in Beijing, then received his MFA degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Multimedia art, such as ink art, participatory art and performance art have always been a passion and hobby in Deng’s life. He started studying Chinese ink art and calligraphy at six years old. Now, his artwork has also migrated to a space within digital media and video. He also experiments with new media art from a Conceptualist position. Deng’s works have been shown in China, the Museum of Chinese in America, The Hamptons Art Fair, and have been featured by The United Nations.

Asian Art SPA features different works, which Deng created after he was attacked at a New York subway station at 86th street. His attacker referred to him as f**king yellow while violently shoving him to the ground. Reclaiming the Asian slur, Deng has created three works that are all yellow, paying respect to the pain the Asian community has felt during this time. These pieces include I am White, Black and Asian, in which a panda is depicted holding two guns; I don’t like the way he looked at me either, and 8 Deadly Shots. The proceeds from these works will be donated to Think!Chinatown, a non-profit whose mission is to foster inter-generational community through neighborhood engagement, storytelling & the arts.

Deng will also feature other works including works from his Yin-Yang Series, a selection of contemporary calligraphy works consisting of a set of mutually opposing and coexisting words: freedom and hope, you and me, me and we, proud and humble. These reflect the different reactions and perspectives of Eastern and Western cultures throughout the last year.
The Teeth Falling Out series will also be spotlighted with works including The Tooth, Water, Sunshine, Soil, and Leaves. Deng has chosen five basic elements of life and painted them individually, aiming to magnify the small and potentially invisible visual characteristics of each. After spending time painting these, Deng feels connected to them, not just physically but spiritually. He was able to respect their value and to not treat them as inconsequential, which is what he hopes his audience will feel.

]]>Carlton Fine Arts presents a new exhibition of works by conceptual Chinese artist, Linjie Deng, titled “Lost Museum,” alongside a curated set of works by Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Marc Chagall, Roy Lichtenstein and Mr. Brainwash. Linjie Deng’s collection will be on display beginning Tuesday, February 16 through Thursday, March 18 at Carlton Fine Arts Ltd. location at 543 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10022.
Linjie Deng is a 29-year-old artist who has lived in New York City since 2015 after graduating from art college in Beijing. Deng began studying Chinese ink art at the age of six and has turned his love and passion for multimedia, participatory and performance art into a career. Deng received his MFA degree from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Deng’s works have been shown in China, the Museum of Chinese in America and The Hamptons Virtual Art Fair.
Password

Among the many highlights is Linjie Deng’s “Password” that explores the connectivity Wi-Fi brought to the world in the midst of the global pandemic lock downs. Wi-Fi and the internet play a major role in sharing content and shaping people’s judgements. “In recent years, we’ve seen the internet encourage fear, division and hate via social media,” said Deng. The artist’s work uses the concept of a password to unlock the key to help vanquish this virus of hate by “spreading love.” For this piece, Linjie Deng will be donating his profits from the sale to first responders at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital that were on the frontlines of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City.
Empty Heart Series (Feature Photo)
Another work featured by Deng is his “Empty Heart” series that is inspired by Deng’s immigration experience upon moving to the United States in 2015. Before coming to New York City, Linjie believed the American dream was directly correlated to material goods, from clothing to high-end meals. After arriving and trying to obtain what he imagined to be the American dream, Deng found his heart empty. “The series symbolizes the items I aspired to attain and serves as a reminder of what our true priorities should be, obtaining a full heart,” says Linjie Deng.
Moon Catcher

“Moon Catcher” by Linjie Deng is also included within the exhibition. The piece is inspired by classic Chinese poetry and symbolism that is used when describing the moon. Deng demonstrates that the moon follows you wherever you are in the world and serves as a reminder of where you first encountered it, in your hometown. Just as Deng is reminded of his home village in the northwestern Shanxi Province, others can be reminded of where they grew up by looking to the moon and knowing that it is always at a fixed point. Steady and unchanging, Deng says that, “no matter how far we may be from home, we can always look back on the moon and remember our roots that have shaped us into who we are today.”
Linjie Deng’s “Lost Museum” exhibition will be on display with all works available for purchase at Carlton Fine Arts Ltd. 543 Madison Ave, New York, NY 10022 location.
