New York, NY – Cynthia McFadden, ABC News, hosts the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) 2013 Courage In Journalism Awards. The IWMF is an organization formed to encourage the leadership role and advancement of female journalist worldwide. Four awards are presented each year to women, who in spite of community resistance, are committed to reporting high-quality news in interest of the public.

“Almost half the world’s population lives in countries where there is no press freedom… places where simply calling yourself a journalist can be life-threatening. Year after year, we find ourselves using the same words to describe what these women endure simply for doing their jobs: threatened, jailed, exiled, kidnapped, raped, shot, killed,” said Cynthia McFadden during her opening remarks.

This year’s Courage In Journalism Award honorees were Najiba Ayubi, media activist and Director of The Killid Group, Afghanistan; Nour Kelze, teacher turned photojournalist during the Syrian uprising (Syrian civil war); and Bopha Phorn, a Reporter for The Cambodian Daily. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Edna Machirori of Zimbabwe, the first black editor to receive the award. And an Inaugural Leadership Award was given to Anne Finucane, Bank of America Global Strategy and Marketing Officer.

George Stephanopoulos, ABC News; Norah O’Donnell, CBS News; Cindi Leive, Editor-in-Chief of Glamour; and Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff, PBS Newshour presented the awards at this year’s New York ceremony held at Cipriani 42nd Street. Nearly 500 prominent media industry professionals were in attendance including Ann Curry, NBC News.

A second west coast ceremony, co-hosted by Cindi Leive and Olivia Wilde is scheduled for October 29th at the Beverly Hills Hilton, Los Angeles, CA.

The IWMF is Washington, DC based organization founded in 1990 by a group of women journalists. Since its inception the organization has awarded 78 journalists with the Courage In Journalism Award and 22 journalists with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Nicole Miller and Peter Davis Fall Fashion Soiree

nicolemiller2New York, NY – Fashion designer Nicole Miller and Peter Davis, Editor in Chief of SCENE Magazine kick off Fall Fashion in a celebratory soiree on the rooftop of the W Residences in FiDi (Financial District).

I was amazed at how surprisingly well organized, polite and capable of handling massive crowds of invited and uninvited guests the event staff was. I watched as one staff member scrolled “the list” on her iPad for the names of the two guests in front of me. When she was unable to locate their names, she thought strategically for a second, and politely allowed the gentlemen to enter with their press pass. A source at The New York Observer told me – 400 guests RSVP’d for the event, but only 200 were confirmed.

After getting passed the door, I was a bit anxious to arrive to the roof-deck thanks to a full lift and several stops. When the doors finally opened to the 57th floor I was excited to be the first to exit, but instead of stepping into a room filled with fashionably dressed ladies and gents, I was greeted by a security filled corridor and step-in-repeat. I decided to make my way to a second elevator at the other end when a photographer from Patrick McMullan invited me to have my picture taken.

A brief elevator ride later, I walked into a crowd filled billiards room and out onto the terrace where I bumped into Adam Weiss and Matthew Sheldon by the bar. The gorgeous LuAnn de Lessepes , The Housewives of New York, joined us for a cocktail and posed for a few photos before vanishing into the social scene. An announcement was made informing us Nicole Miller was ready to give her presentation. The crowd gathered to see the designer and hear her speak as she presented each of six looks from her Fall collection.

After socializing, I again made my way towards the elevator. This time on my way to the 5th floor for a complimentary cocktail. The doors closed, I glanced around and noticed Nicole Miller on the elevator. She broke the silence by sharing that she wore bangs, but didn’t like how they would split down the middle. I felt a little self-conscious because my hair was styled in a ponytail with a  split bang. I thought to myself, “do they look bad?”

At the 5th floor bar, I began telling Adam and Matthew about my Nicole Miller experience when a voice chimed in. I turn and It’s Tom Murro, The Fox Morning Extra and The Huffington Post. I ask, “Were you on the elevator?” “I was,” he said. “Do you think that had anything to do with my bangs?” “I think it probably just reminded her of when she wore bangs.” “This is too funny, I guess it’s going in my story: the night goes out with a bang!” “Personally, I prefer the straight up bang,” he replied. “What about a side bang?,” I ask him. “No, I like the straight up bang better.” We all laughed and ended the night with a metaphorical bang.

Fashion designer Phoenix Keating made his US debut Wednesday at a private event held at Daylight Studios. The event, organized by LER PR (lerpr.com), showcased the Summer Spring 2014 Collection “Vaudeville,” which takes us on a journey through space and time.

When asked about his inspiration for the collection, the designer referenced iconic 1920s vaudeville entertainer Josephine Baker and the woman of the future, who travels through time to correct the course of mankind. Perhaps the closest thing we have to a time machine today, an aircraft carrier, Keating said the idea to design the collection first came to him while on a flight from Sydney where he found himself gazing out the window at the plane’s riveted metal.

His designs are ultra-modern with practical wearability. Keating brilliantly weaves together sheer organza and metallic leather to represent both past and future.

Phoenix Keating first made his fashion debut at the 2011 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia. Having only started his label two years prior, the young designer has already caught the attention of Lady Gaga who wore a Keating dress at her 2011 Sydney concert – earning the designer international recognition. “Vaudeville” is innovative, sexy and bold – made for the modern woman with a futuristic edge.

Is Snake Venom the New Botox?

If you’re anywhere past the age of, oh let’s say 24, you’ve probably poked and pulled at your skin in the mirror on more than one occasion. You may have even received an invite to a trendy Botox party and considered “just a little” here and there. Don’t be ashamed, with shows like The Real Housewives taking over TV screens, the desire to get Botox before 30 is a completely normal way to feel. If you talk to your mother about it however, she may feel a little differently. So what’s a girl to do when she wants some pep around the eyes without the painful and invasive procedure of Botulinum Toxin Injections? That’s where DNA Serum wants to help. This newly released product is derived from the venom of the Temple Viper and is said to smooth and firm the skin under and around the eyes, reduce bags, brighten dark circles, and fill in wrinkles and crow’s feet.

viper-1

Active ingredients in the DNA Serum formula include:

-Syn®-Ake: a small peptide that mimics the effects of Temple Viper Venom. Syn®-Ake targets the neuromuscular activity (that’s what causes wrinkles) and has been referred to as “Botox without a needle.”
-Eyeseryl®: is said to reduce puffiness in as little as 15 days!
-Argireline®: Helps to reduce the degree of already existing wrinkles as well as fight against the formation of future lines with regular use.

syringe-tilted

DNA Serum retails for $109.95 and can be purchased at dnaserum.com. Taking the Botox without a doctor motif one step further, the anti-wrinkle serum is housed in a syringe like container. Each syringe will provide a 45 to 60 day supply – more than enough time to see results.

Will you be giving DNA Serum a try instead of Botox?

It was a beautiful weekend to be a flâneur, but you didn’t have to pretend to be debonair as you strolled past the booths of name brands such as Perrier Jouët, L’atelier du chocolat, Président, Financier Patisseries and Delpeyrat exhibiting at this past weekend’s Taste of France in Bryant Park.

It was the show’s Second Annual event after the widely received patronage of last year’s event held at Pier 54. The event’s organizers thought of everything to capture a taste of the “Art de Vivre” or Lifestyle in France, from beauty, cuisine, cinema and technology to French kisses, as patrons lined up for a turn to make out with well-bred Frenchies.

So, whether you were the type to lay on the lawn and listen to the line-up of live performances, or stroll the promenade past the Eiffel Tower sculpted entirely of butter and sample patisseries and wine, it was an exercise in the art of living. And to the French, c’est trés chic!

Taste of France is a non-profit event designed to promote friendship, awareness and tourism to France.

Artissano by Gabe Corredor Brings Global Fashion to the U.S.

E-commerce site Artissano.com was created by Gabe Corredor after an impromptu trip to South America left him a little chilly – literally. The nighttime air was cooler than expected and Corredor found himself purchasing an alpaca scarf in Peru. “[The] shop possessed an old-world mystery about it; his veritable merchandise had all the craftsmanship of the goods in a Madison Avenue boutique – minus the skyscraper prices,” said Corredor. Similar experiences around the globe led him to wonder why he could not find these local gems stateside – and from there Artissano was born.

A DIFFERENT LOOK AT HONG KONG | FRANK GEHRY

0

I’ve always loved Frank Gehry’s work. Living in NYC I’m able to walk by some of his buildings weekly, most notably and my favorite, the IAC building in Chelsea.

After recently inter-stumbling upon a real estate story stating that Hong Kong Real Estate hit a new high.. (an apartment sold at approx. $61million, putting the price paid per sq ft ($9,773 USD) as the highest in HK history ) My curiosity got the best of me and I had to delve in further. The sale was for an apartment at the Frank Gehry-designed Opus building in Hong Kong.

After checking out a few initial photographs on google photos, I just had to look up the building. I inter-stumbled to the Opus HK building website and found a delightful documentary on Frank Gehry’s visionary collaboration with HK developer, Swire Properties.

The documentary puts HK in a light I had never seen, all of a sudden all of the imagery I’ve sodden my mind with of a smog-laden environment was wiped away and accented with lush greenery and stunning views.

Please delight yourself and watch for yourself.
