Proceeds from the benefit will support 14+ Foundation’s current project, the Chipakata Children’s Academy. “Our mission is to develop and build schools and orphanages for children within rural communities throughout Africa. We’re using education and comprehensive community engagement as a means to allow these children and their communities to reach their full potential.”
About Chipakata Children’s Academy
The Chipakata Children’s Academy will provide a comprehensive primary school education for the children of the community, who currently walk more than 7 km (4.3 miles) each way to the nearest school. The school’s curriculum will incorporate arts-based education programs and provide children of need with full-time housing and care.
The first phase of the Chipakata Children’s Academy, comprised of an academic building and multiple teacher’s housing structures, is in the final phases of construction with new student enrollment underway. Local community members have been key participants in the development and construction process and will continue to actively partner with 14+ Foundation to ensure the project’s long term success. The project will serve these local residents through educational programs as well as other important community-based initiatives, with a focus on long-term sustainability using local agricultural methods and other means.
A number of community-based initiatives have already been completed including infrastructure improvement (roads, bridges and water wells), increased access to medical care and other services through projects such as a community grinding mill (for maize) and a retail shop, which makes basic household goods available. All proceeds support direct operational costs or is used toward other community initiatives. A portion of these proceeds will go toward the foundation’s micro-financing partnership with Tiyeseko Women’s Club, a newly-formed community group comprised of more than 30 local women who seek to improve their lives and well-being through various income-producing activities under this program.

I’ve subscribed to this really neat site called Materia for the longest time. It’s based in the Netherlands and it’s a really fun site to browse around. – www.materia.nl Ever since my first industrial design courses in college I’ve had a fascination with unique materials, fabrics, anything you can use to make.. anything. I go to the site once in awhile just to check out what interesting things have been brought to fruition in the textile industry.
My most recent find is.. Icelandic Wolf Fish leather. The Icelandic Wolf Fish is just that, a fish. Now I’m sure the Wolf Fish has been around a lot longer than Materia.nl but it’s the first time I’m seeing it used as a leather? As far as Materia goes, usually companies in the textile industry will create pages on Materia and upload a few of the projects they’re working on. In the case of Icelandic Wolffish it appears they are the company and the only product they have is Wolf Fish leather. It comes in a variety of shades and it’s “signature characteristic” is its dark spots as you’ll see below which kind of resemble a cheetah print if you look at the hide as a whole.
I could imagine it would be great for creating anything wearable as it doesn’t have scales like python, eel, etc.
Here it is in all its glory :
Used in tiny doses this fabric could be rather unique..
So here’s what the fish looks like in “real life”:
There are 3 different kinds.. the one placed on Materia is the Spotted Wolf Fish.. and is also the one I’ve seen most prevalent in design.
Nothing says summer like bright splashes of color and long flowy fabrics. I was browsing through the goods on SubooUSA.com and became a little bit obsessed right at the get go.
First off, their recently debuted collection for Miami swim week is just insane. Geometrics, bondage, cutouts, the lines are just all so sexy but at the same time could basically be art so you won’t just look like you’re wearing something that looks like it shouldn’t be worn outside of the bedroom. The suits just look cool.. and arty, you’ll basically be a sculpture even if you don’t have a sculpturesque body.
You can find Subuu at Intermix, Neiman Marcus, ShopBop and Evolve… or their website of course http://suboousa.com
Here were my favorites from swimwear:
The Rise & Fall One Piece.. they have a two piece version of this one as well and being a two piece its innately a bit on the sexier side but I think the one-piece is perfect. I could see any body type wear this, and the intercrossing strings add a lot of visual interest. Pair it with a white floppy hat and a breezy coverup and you’re golden.
The Tangerine Halter Neck One Piece – I am in love with orange lately and the halter neck on this makes a statement. I think the lines on this will be very slimming while accentuating the waist in just the right spot and creating curves for those that might not have many. Bare shoulders can be so sexy. Only thing is if you’re out in the sun for any serious amount of time, the white sections are mesh so they may create interesting tan lines.
The suit alone could work well enough as a tank top.. just pair it with a flowy skirt and you’re set to hop around town or go to a pool party without showing too much skin.
Check + Black Bandeau Bikini – This reminded me a bit of a tuxedo kind of look. It’s a little bit jackie O and abstractism put together – makes a statement with the perfect balance of white and black. You can match this with a bright red lip, red sunnies and slicked back hair.
Quilla Qua Pleated Maxi – This item I found in their sale section. I’m in love with feminine micro pleats right now.. on dresses, skirts, shirts anything. This piece definitely satisfied my love for the geometric and the colors I think are paired really well. This skirt would go really well with either or the two one piece suits I put up on top.

Last Wednesday over 300 supporters of the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation and Young New Yorkers raised more than $90,000 at the 7th annual Celebrate Spring New York Fete at LAVO. Proceeds from the evening will benefit PDF’s Côté Clinical Genetics Initiative, which supports research to identify and understand the role of genetic markers in Parkinson’s disease.
Celebrate Spring New York was founded by G. Pennington Egbert III, his sister Missy Egbert Sheehan and their close friend Georgina B. Schaeffer whose fathers both lived with Parkinson’s disease. They joined together to create the Young New Yorkers for the Fight Against Parkinson’s committee, a group of nearly 100 New Yorkers dedicated to advancing a cure for Parkinson’s. Each year the committee hosts Celebrate Spring New York, which has raised nearly $600,000 since its inception.
The event began at 8:00 PM with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dancing with music provided by DJ Brenda Black. The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation supports research and ideas that will improve the lives and futures of people touched by Parkinson’s. Created by William Black, the founder of Chock full o’Nuts, a successful New York coffee and restaurant business, PDF was the first national not-for-profit organization to focus on Parkinson’s disease. Since its founding in 1957, PDF has invested $100 million in the research of leading scientists around the world and has committed an additional $42 million to support education and advocacy programs.

Midtown Manhattan was all a flutter Thursday night with the official Grand Opening Party for NYY Steak at 7 W 51st Street. This new flagship steakhouse, a collaboration between Yankee Global Enterprises and Hard Rock International is a 16,000 square foot, three floor marvel, featuring dry aged USDA prime beef from their in-house butcher shop. Cold weather had no bearing on this night as Yankees stars both past and present graced the “blue carpet” outside before heading indoors to the jam packed party in this three-story restaurant. Among those in attendance were current first baseman Mark Teixeira, former center fielder Bernie Williams (who delighted the crowd with a performance with his All Star Band), David Cone, Dwight Gooden, Roy White and Mickey Rivers. Celebrities and the like also came out in droves to support NYY Steak’s official entry into the Manhattan dining scene including Dujour founder Jason Binn who ushered in the most buzzed about surprise guest of the night – momager Kris Jenner, who looked stunning in a beautiful white winter coat – along with Ava Mullen, daughter of Larry Mullen Jr of U2, singer/actress and recent “Dancing with the Stars” alum Christina Milian, “Long Island Princesses” star Chanel Omari, Delaina Dixon of VH1’s “Gossip Table,” former “Real Housewives of NY” star Jill Zarin, hockey star Mark Messier, Michael Cartellone, drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Bronx Bombers” Broadway star (that starts Friday, January 10th) John Wernke, who plays the legendary Lou Gehrig in the show, and the esteemed James Lipton from Bravo’s “Inside the Actors Studio.”
Flatiron’s newest Mediterranean hotspot Pergola (36 W. 28th Street) celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, January 11, 2014 with a private party for over 200 of its closest friends and family including Sharon Bush, DJ Uch, Jean Shafiroff, Leesa Rowland and VH1’s “The Gossip Table” host Delaina Dixon. Guests enjoyed Pergola’s signature cocktails like the Lavender-Lime Collins and Spearmint 75 crafted by mixologist Scott Fitzgerald, passed hors d’oeuvres by Chef Nestor Moina and a life size hookah cake baked by BCakeNY. The Violin Diva Sarina Suno entertained revelers with a live electronic violin performance throughout the night.

New York, NY – Hosted by Geraldo Rivera, the launch party for #1 New York Times Bestselling author Mike Walkers latest novel was a hit. The legendary National Enquirer columnist holds some clout in the gossip world and heavy-hitters Richard Johnson (Page Six) and Lachlan Cartwright (NY Daily News Confidention) were seen prowling the crowd while a live jazz quartet played in the background, the perfect setting to build a slightly eery vibe for the launch of a vampire tale.
The full title of Mike Walker’s latest novel is “Out For Blood: Private Diary of a Gossip Vampire”, the party took place at Ivy Bar and Grill on Monday, November 4, 2013.
In Out For Blood, the latest book from veteran National Enquirer “Guru of Gossip” Mike Walker, the term “deadline” takes new meaning. Out For Blood’s atypical hero, Clark, has a to-die-for secret: he’s the undead! Flying the night skies to spy on Tinseltown’s sexiest stars and consistently scooping his industry cohorts, with a killer career as gossip-in-residence at the National Revealer, Clark has long stood to be one of Hollywood’s most feared men…which is to say nothing of his razor-sharp bite. But when a sex tape scandal with smokin’ hot starlet/tabloid terror TayLo Logan leads him into a nefarious murder plot that threatens everything he holds dear – including his beloved Revealer post – it’s high time for the real fangs to come out.
An uproariously funny, satirical and surprisingly thought-provoking romp through the sex, lies, and videotape that make the Hollywood gossip machine go ‘round, Out For Blood is a novel that only the likes of Walker could write.
At the book launch party, Mike Walker, Geraldo Rivera and his wife Erica Levy were joined by many close friends and the media elite for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at Ivy Bar and Grill, including New York Post columnist Richard Johnson, New York Observer writer Ben Widdicombe, Executive Producer of The Geraldo Rivera Radio Network Marty Berman, New York Daily News Confidenti@l gossip columnist Lachlan Cartwright, Vanity Fair contributing editor John Connolly, entertainment reporter Bill McCuddy, Inside Edition special correspondent Rita Cosby, Susie Coelho (ex-wife of Sonny Bono), creator of Eyewitness News Albert T. Primo, philanthropist Jean Shafiroff and Resident Magazine editor-in-chief Christopher Pape.
Out For Blood is widely available via all major online retailers and select brick-and-morter booksellers as of October 31st, 2013.
