Whether operating from his Bronx locations or his picturesque upstate New York clinic, Dr. Dassa has spent the better part of the last three decades tending to and accommodating patients with complex conditions such as ligament injuries, orthopedic and hand trauma, and joint fractures.

“Being able to be part of such a legendary group has been such a fulfilling and joyful experience,” says Dassa, “But my work as an orthopedic surgeon is what really fuels my passion for helping people. Being able to be in the clinic by day and on stage at night has really allowed me to connect with people on such an impactful level, and it makes me happy to know that I don’t have to choose between music and medicine.”

Dassa lives by a principle of providing care to all patients in a proficient and compassionate environment, a professional care approach he has nurtured and refined over the years. While Dassa Orthopedics specializes in orthopedic treatments, Dassa also integrates the positive aspects of his musical career into his clinic’s practices. Carnegie Science Salon Attended by Steve Martin, Joan Hardy Clark, Bill and Maria Eugenia Haseltine

2

An art-filled residence Dr. William A. Haseltine and his wife, Maria Eugenia Maury, housed an evening salon with the Carnegie Science Foundation. The recent salon was the third in a series on “Origins”. It’s specific title was  Origins of Life: The Formation of Earth And Our Solar System.  Welcoming his guests Bill explained, “We’ve traveled to Chile where Carnegie has built, and continues to build, more and more powerful telescopes that are helping us understand the origins of the universe.  They’re doing really interesting work there. Tonight, we have a very special conversation, what is the origin of this particular matter that we circle the sun on?  The origins of our planet earth.”

Next, Dr. Eric D. Isaacs, President of Carnegie Science, gave a setting for the evening’s happenings, “In our past salons, we examined the origins of the universe and the formation of all the elements, which is what we’re made of, or as Carl Sagan said, ‘star stuff’. Tonight, we’re going to hear about the origins and evolution of the earth and the solar system. Both very interesting topics, one that we know a little better than about distant stars because it’s right here in our neighborhood. As we learn about the earth and how the earth formed, and how life might have evolved on Earth, we’re going to see how that informs our search for signatures of life on other planets. To guide our conversation tonight, we have two outstanding scientists from Carnegie Science. Dr. Anat Shahar, a staff scientist in what we call an Earth and Planets Lab. He is a deputy for science advancement at Carnegie. Also here is Dr. Scott. He a member of the Earth and Planets Lab, whose fascinating research looks at everything beyond Pluto.”

A conclusion of complex inquiries left Steve Martin in a state of dissatisfaction to which he momentarily resolved by saying, “and we need an answer right away” (which got a big laugh). Father Timothy Healy (former president of Georgetown University) who, reassuringly said, “I don’t really see any discrepancies between theology and science.”

Guests included Veronique Bich, Joan Hardy Clark, Ed Epstein, Robert Hormats, Jeanne Lawrence, Encarnita and Robert Quinlan, Yolanda Santos, Anne Stringfield and two dozen top scientists and researchers.

Marifé Hernández Hosts Celebration for Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation

1

“In Austria the Mozarteum is a well-known national treasure, loved and venerated for their beautiful concert hall and their museum collection.  But tonight, it’s like a coming out party for New Yorkers”, offered the hostess Marifé Hernández last Monday night when she and her husband, Joel Bell, opened their Manhattan duplex to nearly 100 friends to celebrate the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation and meet Linus Klumpner, Director of Mozart Museums, Johannes Honsig-Erlenburg, President of the International Mozarteum Foundation, Stefan Schnoll, Vice Governor of Salzburg and State Counselor for Cultural Affairs, and Reiner Heneis, General Manager of the Mozarteum.

To make the evening even more special, a priceless violin belonging to Mozart, one of six in the Mozarteum collection made its first trip to America and was played at the reception. The 18th century Italian instrument was Mozart’s favorite and one he used to compose and perform. Deemed too difficult to package, the directors of the Foundation carefully walked it onto their flight to New York as hand luggage. “We, of course worry, and protect it in every way possible,” explained Linus Klumpner, “but really just carrying it ourselves onto the airplane is the best way” Introducing the music Johannes Honsig-Erlenburg, added “We know that when God listens to music it’s Bach. But when he turns his back, the Angels listen to Mozart.”

Among the guests were Noreen Buckfire, Philippe de Montebello, Carol and John French, Isabelle Harnoncourt, Elbrun Kimmelman, Sana Sabbagh, Jill Sackler, Pat Schoenfeld, Barbara Tober, Adrienne and Gigi Vittadini.

The Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation owns the largest collection worldwide of original letters, portraits, and instruments of the Mozart Family. In 1880 Mozart’s widow, Constanze, as well as his two sons, Carl Thomas and Franz Xaver Wolfgang, donated the majority of his personal belongings and memorabilia to the Foundation. Ever since Mozarteum has exhibited these musical treasures and arranged superb concerts.

Rising pop singer-songwriter Sasha Prendes is revolutionizing the indie music industry, blending pan-Latin and folk-pop influences in a completely new and captivating way. New York City Passes Ban On Weight Discrimination – What Does That Mean?

1

On May 11, 2023, New York City passed a groundbreaking law that bans weight discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations. The law, signed by Mayor Eric Adams, makes it illegal to deny someone a job, an apartment, or access to a public place because of their weight, promising more inclusive workplaces and living environments and protection against discrimination. During public hearings, New Yorkers in support of this bill brought up issues, such as difficulty with seating in restaurants and theaters, being denied housing by landlords, and weight restrictions on the city’s bike-sharing program. The law aims to level the playing field for New Yorkers who struggle with obesity and have faced bias due to their weight.

What This Law Means

This law means New Yorkers cannot face discrimination because of their weight. For example, an employer cannot refuse to hire someone because they are overweight, and a landlord cannot refuse to rent someone an apartment because they have obesity. This law also means that New Yorkers cannot be denied access to public places, such as restaurants, stores, and parks, because of their weight. These efforts follow an increase in obesity over the past few decades. In the whole of New York state, adults who are overweight or have obesity increased from 42% in 1997 to 63.6% in 2021. More people are facing unjust discrimination and exclusion due to their appearance, further perpetuating social injustice and the public health crisis.

The Impact of Weight Discrimination

Weight discrimination harms people’s lives, including their physical and mental health, their employment opportunities, and their housing options. It also extends beyond issues of weight; weight bias is intertwined with racial, ethnic, and gender discrimination. Many victims of weight discrimination are women; a 10% increase in a woman’s body mass decreased her income by 6%. Women of color—who already earn less than their white and male peers—struggle even more when weight is brought into the picture. People with different body types have historically been denied access to job opportunities and equal wages, and there are no legal protections that can counter these situations. This law provides a legal recourse for people with obesity who have faced unfair discrimination. This helps address other social justice issues linked to weight, cultivating a more tolerant and accepting society overall.

The Shift in Weight Culture

The passing of this law comes at a time when discussions around weight and obesity have shifted. For years, obesity was seen as the fault of the person and their lifestyle choices, rather than a complex condition that can be caused by various factors beyond a person’s control. Unlike skin color, weight was viewed as something under a person’s control, which is why there was a lack of protection against bias and prejudice.

Today, the discourse surrounding obesity is becoming more nuanced. Obesity management methods have shifted from encouraging weight loss or providing tips and tricks for quick results. Now, people can join a healthy weight loss program and receive tailored guidance with science-backed methods that focus on simple nutrition, factors over fads, building and maintaining healthy habits, and doctor-led access to prescription medication. Managing obesity without focusing on numbers and calories helps make weight loss sustainable and realistic, and it considers more complex factors of weight, such as biology, sleep, stress, and more. Social aspects of weight are also being brought to light. Issues like food insecurity that plague low-income neigborhoods in New York lack sources of accessible products of protein, whole grains, produce, and dairy. These areas are mainly populated with marginalized communities, further exacerbating inequalities.

Weight discrimination impacts various social and health aspects in New York City. This new law barring this prejudice can make a positive change in the way people with overweight or obesity are treated regarding housing, work, public spaces, and society overall.
