LARRY RIVERS AT VERED GALLERY, EAST HAMPTON NY

“Washington Crossing the Delaware”, Larry Rivers, 1960

John Canada, the chief art critic of The New York Times called Larry Rivers “the cleverest, even the foxiest painter at work in the country,” an artist who “can do anything he wants…” At a time when Abstract Expressionism ruled under the mantra, ‘nothing should be recognizable’, Larry Rivers took up a seemingly ‘old fashioned, academic sort of figure painting producing in 1953 the mammoth 7 x 9 foot Washington Crossing the Delaware (MOMA New York: Permanent Collection), a work done with both the irreverence of wiped out and smeared surfaces and the strong reality of our country’s first heroic figure, George Washington.  In 1949-50, Clement Greenberg, the powerful critic, called him ”an amazing beginner,” a ”better composer of pictures than was Bonnard himself in many instances.”    De Kooning in his obscure but precise way once said that looking at Mr. Rivers’ art was ”like pressing your face in wet grass,” which summed up the mixture of sensations it could provoke.”  Famed critic for Time Magazine Robert Hughes wrote: critic’s claim that “the innovations of Rauschenberg, and to a lesser degree Johns and the Pop artists, are incomprehensible without Rivers” is plainly excessive. Nonetheless, Rivers built an important bridge between the painterliness and “touch” of Abstract Expressionism and the mass imagery of Pop—pinups, photos, print, and mixed media.

“Boston Harbor and Shooting”, Larry Rivers, 1970

An Exhibition in Two Parts:

Me and My Shadow consists of four larger than life size ‘mirror’ images; each a sumptuous female figure and her shadow, created in 1970; constructions with photo-montage, canvas, plastic, wood and plexi.

Oedipus Rex, the 29 works comprising the entire suite created for the 1966 Igor Stravinsky Opera-Oratorio festival at Lincoln Center. VIEW in its entirety: all 29 panels. It revolves around the work by Sophocles describing the plague that descended on Thebes c.400 BCE during the reign of Oedipus the King.  It is comprised of 29 oil and spray painted works on linen applied to wood free-formed shaped wood panels.  This suite is being shown for the first time since it premiered in 1966, and offered only en suite.  It is accompanied by 7 preliminary drawings and one stencil offered individually.

On August 7, at 11am Vered Gallery will host a brunch for a conversation on Larry Rivers and the exhibition between David Cohen; Editor/Publisher of artcritical and Catherine Gropper; former student of Larry Rivers, actress and playwright.  Limited seating will be available.   RSVP to lauren@rcourihaycpr.com.

Vered Gallery is open daily from 11am – 6pm weekdays and Sunday and 11 to 9pm on Saturday.  For further information, please contact Lauren Stiffelman, lauren@rcourihaycpr.com, (212) 580-0835.

All proceeds go towards SASF’s crucial initiatives, such as their low-cost spay/neuter mobile van granted by the ASPCA, efforts to rescue animals enslaved in puppy mills, and the daily care of the rescues within the shelter. They also benefit the shelter’s programs that help special needs children, along with educating, mentoring and implementing SASF’s “Playing For Life” program, which is currently in over 40 shelters and highlighted at the major animal conferences throughout the U.S.

Further information

The Hope for Depression Research Foundation is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide. Despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. To date, HDRF has provided more than $20 million through over 125 grants for accelerated breakthrough depression research that promises to lead to new and better medications and treatments. Our mission is two-fold:

  • To accelerate advanced brain research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression.
  • To raise awareness of depression as a medical illness, educate the public and erase the stigma of depression.

Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in April 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Every dollar raised goes directly to research.

About Union Cantina

Union Cantina is owned by Southampton Social Club’s Ian Duke and David Hilty, who have teamed up with Southampton Social Club’s award-winning Executive Chef Scott Kampf to create this innovative modern Mexican eatery in the old “Publick House” space, designed just for Southampton. Chef Kampf, who has been featured on the legendary television show Iron Chefs of America, brings his dedication to the classic “farm to table” cooking style to the new Union Cantina. The menu includes signature dishes such as the Castilla de Res Mole – a beef short rib with sweet local corn bread pudding, charred heirloom carrots and mole sauce, and the innovative Deconstructed Enchiladas, which come in five variations: Marinated Aracherras (skirt steak), Robalo Rayados (striped bass), Picante Camarones (spicy shrimp), Pollo Tirada (pulled chicken) and Vegetales (vegetable). Pair these flavorful dishes with Union Cantina’s signature cocktail Cinnamon Sol, which is a refreshing mix of Don Julio Reposado, cinnamon, pineapple & fresh lime juices.

The restaurant is open year round for lunch and dinner and features a bottomless brunch on Saturday and Sundays. The space also incorporates a former prohibition speakeasy which has reopened as the 400 Rabbits Tequila Bar, and carries more than 100 types of tequila. Diners can also enjoy the outside bar and café space which will remain open throughout the warmer months. A signature cocktail program is offered, featuring an extensive tequila menu, in addition to sangrias, punches and frozen drinks. The restaurant is situated in the iconic Bowden Square. The square offers a central meeting point in Southampton to gather with friends and family for great food and drinks. Union Cantina pays homage to this historic building by keeping the original features while giving the space a modern touch.

The décor, which is best described as “Hamptons chic meets Rustic Cantina”, features a mixture of dark woods, Spanish glass and vibrant Mexican artwork. The bars have been restored to their original beauty from days long past and the newly renovated outdoor bar is the feature of a reclaimed wood art installation.  The venue seats over 200 indoors, with an outdoor patio that seats 35 for dinner and assorted lawn seating.

Achim Daub,  President, Scent & Care of Symrise, the world’s largest supplier of fragrance raw materials, was the featured speaker on Monday at the World Perfumery Congress at the Fontainebleau Miami. Daub spoke on Symrise’s recent acquisition of Pinova, and the importance of backwards integration – the concept of controlling their supply chain “from source to scent” as a way of maintaining sustainability, transparency and traceability in a world where consumers increasingly want to know what they are putting both in and on their bodies.

Midway through the event, Jean Shafiroff thanked guests for attending, as well as Steve Bernstein, President of the Southampton Hospital Foundation, for his outstanding job in fundraising, and the Phillips family for their important contribution.

Robert Chaloner, President and CEO of Southampton Hospital, then thanked Jean for her hospitality and said that the year Jean hosted the Hospital’s Annual Summer Party was the most successful to date, raising over $2 million. He then spoke about the creation of the center, saying, “Cancer patients undergoing treatment are often physically weakened, and adding a long trip to and from an appointment only adds to the stress.” He continued, “We are grateful to the Phillips family for making cancer treatment closer to home for many patients on the East End of Long Island.”
