The FBFO was formed to support the Orchestra’s work in the USA and across the world. Supporters of the Foundation raise public awareness and financial support for the BFO and have the opportunity to build a closer relationship with the Orchestra both in the States and at home in Budapest.

The Budapest Festival Orchestra is one of the international music scene’s major success stories, being rated among the top ten orchestras in the world, and according to David Allen of the New York Times they “might be the best in the world,” (1/22/15.) Its key figure is Music Director and Conductor Iván Fischer who was one of the Orchestra’s founding fathers. The BFO’s unique system works to encourage the artistic qualities of its musicians to blend together, forming an exquisitely homogenous orchestral sound.

Both audience and critics alike acknowledge the quality in the ensemble’s captivating chamber music performances, as well as the all-pervasive dynamism with which it shares the joy of music-making with the audience.

The orchestra is a regular guest at the world’s most important music venues and concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York, Vienna’s Musikverein, the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and London’s Royal Albert Hall. They have repeatedly been invited to perform at international music events such as the Mostly Mozart Festival, the Salzburger Festspiele or the Edinburgh International Festival.

Directed by Mason Beggs (who regularly directs for Art House in New Jersey and teaches at The New School in New York City), the video can be described as a trailer park fantasy. Backed by the vocals of Giselle, “My Heart Goes…” is about the feelings of innocent love and infatuation and the sense of not being able to communicate that. It’s a fun, carefree song with a modern 60s vibe.

Giselle has performed at top-tier venues including Carnegie Hall, The Bitter End, Rockwood Music Hall and Mercury Lounge and her music is available on iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon.

About Giselle

Giselle was born in Miami, FL to Cuban immigrants. Her family’s taste in predominantly Latin music, jazz, & oldies, combined with her own love of classical music and pop culture inspired her music evolution. Giselle became immersed with music, taking private lessons in voice and various instruments.  A voice teacher gave Giselle her first ticket to the opera Tosca, which fueled her passion to pursue operatic training and ultimately led to her pursuit of a vocal performance degree at a conservatory Miami, FL. Feeling caged in by the academic environment, Giselle packed her bags and moved to New York City.

Giselle 2

Giselle

Her vocal style evolved as she began charting new territories as a songwriter. After a chance meeting with mixing and audio engineer Adam Tilzer during a recording session, Giselle began working on her debut EP, “Change Me.” Tilzer is the engineer for the Emmy award winning FX comedy “Louie” and on the first day of recording the music for Season 5, Adam overheard Louis C.K. ask for an opera singer. Giselle received a phone call from Adam to be at Avatar Studios. Afterwards, she was asked to come back and sing and write an array of genres on five episodes of Season 5.

GiselleProof003

Giselle

Giselle narrowed her focus to songwriting and assisting Tilzer with the production of her original music in order to bring her creative vision to life. “Change Me” combines her confidence and emotional intellect with her diverse abilities as a vocalist. The release of her debut EP “Change Me” is a rebuff to all the attempts to alter her as an artist and an illustration of her evolution as a person and musician.

As guests sat down for dinner, Chuck Scarborough thanked everyone for attending and for their support of the hospital, before Jim and Hollis Forbes and Marigay McKee stood to say, “What an honor it has been to work with the dedicated team at Southampton Hospital.”

Southampton Hospital is recognized by the NYS Department of Health as a provisional Level III adult trauma center, the first one on Long Island’s East End. This designation enables the Hospital to provide care to the most critically injured patients. During the summer season when the regional population swells, it is even more critically important that trauma care be accessible close by. Faster treatment for trauma patients can mean the difference between life and death, so support for this essential service is vital.

High Temps and Spirits at Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s Inaugural Walk of Hope to Defeat Depression

0

Bright sunshine and high spirits were in abundant supply at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) first ever Walk of Hope to Defeat Depression on Saturday, July 30 in Southampton.

Despite the heat wave, a high-energy crowd of over 200 people gathered at the Southampton Cultural Center for the 9 AM walk to raise awareness and funds for advanced depression research. Speaking at a microphone at the top of the Cultural Center steps, HDRF Founder and Chair Audrey Gruss reminded the participants that, “according to the World Health Organization, depression is the number one cause of disability worldwide.”

Wearing baseball hats and t-shirts the color of hope – a bright, sunshiny yellow – participants of all ages walked three miles around Lake Agawam. The crowd headed down Jobs Lane at a steady clip, then turned right onto Main Street and around the lake via village streets, to finish back at the Cultural Center.

Southampton Mayor Mark Epley helped kick off the walk with Gruss. “The Walk of Hope has gathered the community to recognize that depression is a real medical condition,” he said. “It is serious but can and must be treated.” Gruss added that more research into the illness is critical to find new treatments for depression that are more effective and without side effects. She noted that 50% of people who need help do not respond to existing medications.

The Hope for Depression Research Foundation is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide. Despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. To date, HDRF has provided more than $20 million through over 125 grants for accelerated breakthrough depression research that promises to lead to new and better medications and treatments.

Our mission is two-fold:

  • To accelerate advanced brain research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression.
  • To raise awareness of depression as a medical illness, educate the public and erase the stigma of depression.

Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in April 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Every dollar raised goes directly to research.

John Canaday, the chief art critic of The New York Times called Larry Rivers “the cleverest, even the foxiest painter at work in the country,” an artist who “can do anything he wants…” At a time when Abstract Expressionism ruled under the mantra, ‘nothing should be recognizable’, Larry Rivers took up a seemingly old fashioned, academic sort of figure painting, producing in 1953 the mammoth 7 x 9 foot Washington Crossing the Delaware (MOMA New York: Permanent Collection), a work done with both the irreverence of wiped out and smeared surfaces and the strong reality of our country’s first heroic figure, George Washington.

In 1949-50, Clement Greenberg, the powerful critic, called him ”an amazing beginner,” a ”better composer of pictures than was Bonnard himself in many instances.” De Kooning in his obscure but precise way once said that looking at Mr. Rivers’ art was ”like pressing your face in wet grass, which summed up the mixture of sensations it could provoke.”  Famed critic for Time Magazine Robert Hughes wrote, critic’s claim that “the innovations of Rauschenberg, and to a lesser degree Johns and the Pop artists, are incomprehensible without Rivers” is plainly excessive. Nonetheless, Rivers built an important bridge between the painterliness and “touch” of Abstract Expressionism and the mass imagery of Pop—pinups, photos, print, and mixed media.

Me and My Shadow consists of four larger than life size ‘mirror’ images; each a sumptuous female figure and her shadow, created in 1970; constructions with photo-montage, canvas, plastic, wood and plexi.

Oedipus Rex, the 29 works comprising the entire suite created for the 1966 Igor Stravinsky Opera-Oratorio festival at Lincoln Center. It revolves around the work by Sophocles describing the plague that descended on Thebes c.400 BCE during the reign of Oedipus the King. It is comprised of 29 oil and spray painted works on linen applied to wood free-formed shaped wood panels. This suite is being shown for the first time since it premiered in 1966, and offered only en suite. It is accompanied by 7 preliminary drawings and one stencil offered individually. VIEW in its entirety: all 29 panels.
