Audrey Gruss Celebrates Publication of Jay McInerney’s ‘Bright, Precious Days’

0

On Tuesday October 4th, Audrey Gruss hosted a cocktail party at 21 Club to celebrate the publication of Jay McInerney’s most recent book, ‘Bright, Precious Days’ attended by some of New York’s leading lights and society figures.

Bright, Precious Days is a sexy, vibrant, cross-generational New York story – a literary and commercial triumph of the highest order that received a rave review from the New York Times.  Even decades after their arrival, Corrine and Russell Calloway still feel as if they’re living the dream that drew them to New York City in the first place: book parties or art openings one night and high-society events the next; jobs they care about (and in fact love); twin children whose birth was truly miraculous; a loft in TriBeCa and summers in the Hamptons. But all of this comes at a fiendish cost. Russell, an independent publisher, has superb cultural credentials yet minimal cash flow; as he navigates a business that requires, beyond astute literary judgment, constant financial improvisation, he encounters an audacious, potentially game-changing—or ruinous—opportunity. Meanwhile, instead of chasing personal gain in this incredibly wealthy city, Corrine devotes herself to helping feed its hungry poor, and she and her husband soon discover they’re being priced out of the newly fashionable neighborhood they’ve called home for most of their adult lives, with their son and daughter caught in the balance. Then Corrine’s world is turned upside down when the man with whom she’d had an ill-fated affair in the wake of 9/11 suddenly reappears. As the novel unfolds across a period of stupendous change—including Obama’s historic election and the global economic collapse he inherited—the Calloways will find themselves and their marriage tested more severely than they ever could have imagined.

Anne Hearst McInerney attended with her sister Patricia Hearst Shaw, and Jim Belushi, Bill Brattonand Rikki Klieman, Nicole Miller, Chuck Scarborough, Alina Cho, all showed their support.

Tony Cointreau Hosts Book Party Celebrating Second Publication “A Gift of Love – Lessons Learned from My Work and Friendship with Mother Teresa”

On Tuesday September 20, Tony Cointreau celebrated the publication of his new book, “A Gift of Love – Lessons Learned from My Work and Friendship with Mother Teresa” with a party at Michaels.

A Table from the Celebration

In his second book, the author, singer, humanitarian, and scion to the French liqueur family reveals what he gained from working so closely with Mother Teresa during their 12 years together at the NYC AIDS charity, A Gift of Love. Tony’s partner of 50 years, Jim Russo helped greet guests including Mary Higgins Clark, Cece Cord, Francine LeFrak and Rick Friedberg, Julie Hayek, Nancy Pearson, Henri Kessler, JD Thompson, Maria Cooper Janis, Joan Benny, and Eric Bottcher.

Midway through the event, Tony made a short speech first thanking his partner Jim for his support over years. He then spoke about “Mother” and how much of a friend she was to the “dying, destitute and diseased.” He went on to say, how it was “scary to be with her in public, as people did not treat her like a human.” He then toasted the late Sister Jean Marshall, who was the Founder of St. Ritas Refugee Center in the Bronx, and “one of the unsung saints of the world because of her work with Vietnamese children displaced by war.”

With tears in his eyes, Tony then read a short passage from the memoir which honored his partner Jim Russo and his told a touching tale of how Jim comforted his dying sister through dance.

Additional guests: Leesa Rowland and Larry Wohl, Cassandra Seidenfeld, Jane Scher, Dr. Calapai, Dr. Kenneth Mark, Arthur Aidala, Michael Cerbelli and Cindy Guyer.

After experiencing a comfortable childhood as an heir to the Cointreau liquor fortune, and a successful career in show business, Tony felt that he needed something more meaningful in his life. This led him to spend twelve years as a dedicated volunteer in Mother Teresa’s hospices in New York and Calcutta, helping more than one hundred people while they went through the process of dying.

tony-cointreau

Every family eventually has to deal with caregiving and the end of life, and Tony’s friends kept pleading with him to write his experiences so that when they had to face it they would have a better idea of the simple things they could do to help their own loved ones during those last months, weeks, days, or hours. This book is Tony’s answer to those requests. His overall approach to caregiving for the living as well as for the dying shines through in each chapter, both in practical matters and in reverence for the privilege of sharing in life’s momentous transitions.

Tony Cointreau’s first book, Ethel Merman, Mother Teresa … and Me: My Improbable Journey from Chateaux in France to the Slums of Calcutta, was published in 2014 and told the story of how Tony after a successful international singing career and several years on the Cointreau board of directors, he felt a need for something more meaningful in his life and found his way to Calcutta.

Collectors Show FALL 2016 – Details from the Event

0

The  Collectors Show provides 30% of the energy that sustains it and Art Prize provides the other 70%.   Initially I participated in Art Prize with idealistic, utopian ideas of what it meant for humanity. However,  progress is slow and my  ideas about the event and for art aren’t going to go away. The Collector’s Show offers exciting development in bridges art can provide.

Paul Resika, "Redon", oil on linen, 30" x 24"
Paul Resika, “Redon”, oil on linen, 30″ x 24″

I was pleasantly surprised by this event; it was refreshing to hear that the team involved in the “Collectors Show/Fall 2016” seems to have similar ideas to mine about the importance of art in human lives. I walked in as Michael Coleman was giving a few notes about the show. He asked the audience how many of us knew the lyrics to “Hotel California”.  The people who did raised their hands. He then asked of that group how many people knew what those lyrics  meant. No one affirmed their understanding. Art is ephemeral like that as are human relationships. Art Prize’s executive Director,  Christian Gaines, spoke next about the partnership. Finally Tyler Loftis gave a few remarks many of which are in the following content.

Jodie Dilno, "Mirror, Mirror", acrylic on canvas , 15" x12"
Jodie Dilno, “Mirror, Mirror”, acrylic on canvas , 15″ x12″

Along with notable diversity of the work is notable quality. Tyler curated the show himself so he got to experience each piece first-hand.  He has a natural ability to “sense” how the pieces will go together best. All of the works are two dimensional and include the mediums of paper assemblage, collage, beading, drawing and painting. A few of the pieces test the strict display expectations placed on art by tradition.

Deandre Norman, "Sad Clown", mixed media, 48" x 24"
Deandre Norman, “Sad Clown”, mixed media, 48″ x 24″

The number one thing Tyler hears people say about art, as many people working around art have heard, is that they know nothing about art. That art as it is traditionally understood is not part of the culture in grand Rapids is why Art Prize is able to flourish there, in Tyler’s opinion.  Art Prize is fairly simplistic. It is not difficult to participate and there are not many boundaries hindering one from doing so. The non traditional approach allows the event to be  as diverse as it is.

Tyler Loftis, "Chris", oil on canvas, 28" x 22"
Tyler Loftis, “Chris”, oil on canvas, 28″ x 22″

What compels these artists to create and make is being said by the work. The artist doesn’t need to explain what is there as much as people need to trust that they have the “answers” from the artist in their intuitions already. In this way, all people are encouraged to think critically without needing experts to tell them.

"Still Life", Doris Lee, oil on panel, 10" x 15.5"
“Still Life”, Doris Lee, oil on panel, 10″ x 15.5″

In the show itself men and women are represented nearly equally and nations from different part of the globe are represented. Tyler doesn’t know what this event or Art Prize will be in the future but he guesses that they will have an impact on art in the world.

Rrick Beerhorst, "The Distracted Reader", oil on canvas, 29.5" x 29",
Rrick Beerhorst, “The Distracted Reader”, oil on canvas, 29.5″ x 29″,

The show is up until 8 at the Harris Building located at 111 S. Division, Grand Rapids, Michigan. A version of it happen twice a year.  Stay tuned for future articles!
