MTA New York City Transit and the New York Transit Museumare putting extra magic on the rails with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s annual holiday tradition of rides to the past via its vintage fleet. These subway cars will help customers experience the most magical time of year the way that New York straphangers did long ago.
A special eight-car subway train that is typically displayed in the Transit Museum is put into service for special Sunday rides. This “Shoppers Special” takes customers between Lower Manhattan to Queens on four consecutive Sundays from Thanksgiving weekend to the week before Christmas, all for the swipe of a MetroCard.
The “Shoppers Special” consists of R1/9 subway cars, also known as City Cars, which ran on the lettered lines from the 1930s to the 1970s, serving subway lines that may be unfamiliar to current customers, such as the , , , and H. The jazz composer Billy Strayhorn would have taken a City Car to Sugar Hill when Duke Ellington told him to “Take the A Train.” These subway cars, which were ordered for the Independent Subway System (IND), have rattan seats, ceiling fans, incandescent bulb lighting, drop-sash style windows, and roll signs. They became the model of NYC Transit’s modern subway cars, with the same dimensions as the modern R160s and the foundation for the design of the upcoming R211 cars.
“We owe a great deal to these City Cars, because they were durable work horses that remained in our fleet for 40 years. They are the foundation of every subway car we have designed since, and they continue to serve as a reminder of our past and how far we have come in design and customer comfort,” said Wynton Habersham, NYC Transit’s Senior Vice President of Subways. “Our customers love riding these vintage classics every year, and we love showing them off.”
Seven of the cars on the “Shoppers Special” are nearly identical except one: No. 1575, which appears much more modern than the rest of the consist. No. 1575 is the prototype for the subway car class that followed the R1/9, with amenities such as fluorescent lights and smaller ceiling fans. Customers can visit the train year-round at the Transit Museum, though it sometimes makes guest appearances for special occasions such as anniversaries and the holidays.
The “Shoppers Special” runs via the 6 Av Line between 2 Av and Queens Plaza beginning the Sunday after Thanksgiving, on the following dates: November 27, December 4, December 11 and December 18.
The Greek civilization is the most obvious historical reference for physical fitness because they started the most well know athletic event worldwide, the Olympics. Ever since people have had bodies though, we have been taking care of them. In all sorts of ways. The ways have gotten crazier and more complex and they will continue to do so.
What does this have to do with New York? People all over New York do spin classes. Those people are humans. Just by being human, you can relate to what is being written. Why am I writing this? Because I can’t stop thinking about it and I’m sure I’ve developed this story because it has value.
I’ve got to get a little personal here for you to understand my point. I go to the gym to feel better and healthier as most people that go to gyms do. Those factors did not bring me to the gym, though. They are side affects. I was in a car accident 14 years ago (To the day!) that did some major damage to my body. Lucky for me gyms are so prevalent, right?!
A painting of a spin rider on her bike.
I’ve heard that French women do not preoccupy themselves with working out the way American women do. It’s really stressful to be social at times. There are so many expectations, comparisons and judgements one can process any time they are around more people than themselves (crunchy feelings are pretty much unavoidable).
I wasn’t raised going to a gym and I probably wouldn’t think about it so much if I didn’t have such a dramatic experience with mine. Our body is are one of our biggest resources.
A big part of my life, my body, before this car wreck was singing. I sincerely enjoyed it. It was my passion. It was my connection to things “beyond” me. It still is though. I get so excited when I see versions of choir happening in various places; I’m working on finding that joy again. One place I’ve found it and one that is also helpful to my voice and body is spin class. An alive class is a lot of work. It takes gumption and determination to take a class and finish it. Nothing feels as nice as hard work. It’s a lot like a choir rehearsal, actually. My brain couldn’t help but be attracted to it.
Something incredible has happened in the spin room at the Y. If the group energy “clicks” we have a group of enthusiastic riders the mirrors will fog over from our breath! The instructor I spin with most (because he encourages us to make noise), Jeff Blasen, skis. You know snow angels? He developed the sweat angel carved out of our sweat on the mirror.

I’m sure there is a psychological benefit to adjusting your body chemistry the way you do in certain gym classes.

HDRF Founder & Chair Audrey Gruss saluted Anderson Cooper for his public discussion of his family’s personal story of depression and suicide. His use of multi-media to speak out about his own family’s experience helps reduce stigma and sparks millions of life-saving conversations.
Focused on the topic “The Search for New Depression Treatments,” the sold-out event featured Dr. John Krystal, Yale’s Chief of Psychiatry, who spoke about the crisis in depression research. Dr. Helen Mayberg of Emory University explained her pioneering work in Deep Brain Stimulation and the latest discoveries of HDRF’s elite team of researchers collaborating as the Depression Task Force.

Chuck Scarborough was Master of Ceremonies and guests, including Jay McInerney, Karen LeFrak, Susan Gutfreund, and HRH Princess Katherine of Serbia, listened as he noted that depression has become the Number One Reason in the world for disability. He also noted the rise of depression awareness in the media, with a growing movement of celebrities — Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Kristen Bell, Naomi Judd and the rapper Kid Cudi — speaking out against stigma and sharing their personal experience with the illness.

HDRF Executive Director Louisa Benton spoke about the strong presence of HDRF in the media through the new technology of a satellite media tour conducted by Audrey Gruss in 30 U.S. cities. She also shared the powerful TV advertisement created by McCann Humancare. Benton briefly described the success of the first Walk of Hope this past July in Southampton. She then introduced 11-year-old Shane Boylan, who raised $4,000 with a bike ride he organized in memory of his father, who died by suicide.

Audrey Gruss then introduced “journalist, author, thinker and humanitarian,” Anderson Cooper, who accepted the HOPE Award with a heartfelt speech that explained how he managed his emotions after his brother committed suicide in 1988. He became a war reporter and traveled the world telling other people’s stories before he began to heal by telling his own story. He said there were moments in the “dwindling light of day when you expected to find darkness and [instead] you find light and humanity.” He concluded with saying, “Each of us will get by the best that we can [but] we must reach out and tentatively touch with our hands, with our eyes, and with our hearts.”
The Luncheon Seminar Co-Chairs are: Caroline Dean, Arthur Dunnam, Bonnie Pfeifer Evans, Peter Gregory, Susan Gutfreund, Tania Higgins, Eleanora Kennedy, Margo Langenberg, Jay McInerney, and Farah Moinan.
Additional guests included: Janna Bullock, Sharon Bush, Caroline Dean, William Flaherty, Jamee Gregory, Martin Gruss, Mai Hallingby Harrison, Kim Heirston, Yaz Hernandez, Ritchey Howe, Eleanora Kennedy, Margo Langenberg, Kamie Lightburn, Sharon Loeb, Christine Mack, Lorrie & Mark Newhouse, Tom Quick, Patti Raynes, Nancy Silverman, Scott Snyder and Robert Zimmerman .

About Bridgette Morphew:
]While still a college student in Florida, Bridgette Morphew started her first business, Victim Clothing, a t-shirt company. The business quickly grew into a pop-culture phenomenon, and was featured in Rolling Stone and The New York Times. Upon graduating, Bridgette to New York City where in 2005, she started Paradox Designs to collect and curate rare fashion artifacts to provide fashion designers with an exclusive source of historical context. With a collection of over 5,000 pieces, Paradox is now a well-respected resource for the world’s most celebrated designers. Jason Lyon has an eye for the rare and the exquisite. A self-taught 20th century fashion historian, Lyon has a vast and insatiable thirst for knowledge and his unique combination of knowledge and enthusiasm gives him the tools to innovate and expertly rework vintage archives for Morphew Lab. For Jason, a meaningful artifact is what he calls “a rare anomaly of fashion history.” As such he is drawn to pieces from both the world’s most famous as well as forgotten designers.
About Morphew Lab
In the process of constructing one of the world’s most extensive antique fashion archives, Bridgette and Jason began adapting vintage pieces to a contemporary audience. With direct feedback from designers, coupled with access to vintage fashions spanning more than a century, they got to work on Morphew Lab, a place where antique fashion, contextual history, future trends and technology meet. Morphew Lab goes beyond the notion of reclamation; it reinvents designs that are at once timeless and of its time. With the belief that restoration and creation go hand-in-hand. Morphew and Lyon carefully select fabrics and pieces combining historical with contemporary silhouettes, fabrics and techniques, morphing them into wearable, relevant and aspirational garments. The result is a collection of unique, trend-forward designs with strong historical contexts. Morphew Lab is a place where the past meets the present, while instrumentally impacting the future of fashion.

Renowned, provocative artist Robert Cenedella, who’s the subject of the critically acclaimed documentary “Art Bastard,” unveiled his latest work, “Fín del Mundo” (End of the World) on Wednesday, November 2nd at Central Park Fine Arts Gallery in Manhattan to dozens of fans and art aficionados.

Loosely inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s infamous The Garden of Earthly Delights, Fín del Mundo presents us with a garden of unearthly delights: a triptych depicting the end of the world as a cornucopia of disasters both natural and man-made. Much like the illustrious Bosch’s work, this 6 x 10 foot mural presents us with detailed vignettes embedded within a titanic, cataclysmic prediction of the inevitable demise of humankind.
But unlike Bosch’s masterpiece, Cenedella’s wasteland is replete with industrial evils, nuclear waste, and the ghosts of capitalism past, present and future; our modern hell, in other words, is plastered with Coke ads and Victoria’s Secret logos. Like the two thieves crucified along with Jesus Christ (who makes his own presence known, albeit with the cynicism of a perfect heretic), the gravest sinners of our contemporary age are pinioned: Big Oil companies, Big Banks, and Big Politicians. In their shadows, one finds a great deal of relevant commentary on the martyrs and victims of globalized greed, personified in the list of names of unarmed black men painted, memorial-style, on the cracked Liberty Bell, as well as the specters of the truly disenfranchised Native-American tribes (the Dakota pipeline protesters in particular).
Rather than offer us a mythological, mystical, universal path to hell, rife with demons and gods, Cenedella’s painting is intent upon pointing fingers at specific demons of flesh and blood (if a corporation qualifies as one), hitting right at the nose of our contemporary political, environmental and social tragedies. Ours is a human dilemma, he appears to urge, and our punishment will be meted out by our own hands and not that of any celestial or hellish being.
A cropped portion of Fín del Mundo
An anonymous collector, who had been friends with the painter for the past 30 years, sent a deposit to Cenedella and explained that he was upset with the ways of the world, and he wanted a painting that expressed all of society’s ills, with the general theme being The End of the World. It was agreed that Cenedella would retain artistic freedom over the content, but the idea was for the painting to be on display in time for the Presidential Election.
The collector released the End of the World painting, given its size and current importance, and purchased another controversial painting, Impeachment Off the Table, which chronicles the George Bush 9/11 era and Nancy Pelosi’s famous declaration the day after Obama was elected president.
If and when this painting sells, Cenedella has insisted on being able to continue to change things in the painting depending on the latest news – for example, we may sadly expect that the list of names of unarmed black people killed by police on the Liberty Bell will continue to grow.
List of names painted on the Liberty Bell:
Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Eric Garner, Frank Shepherd, Tyre King, Levonia Riggins, Oscar Grant, Donta Taylor, Akai Gurley, Sandra Bland, Walter Scott, Tamir Rice. and Trayvon Martin.
Also up for scrutiny are the following familiar faces of past Republican nominees and hopefuls:
Chris Christie, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Vladimir Putin (not a Republican nominee but as a close friend of Trump, has an honorary spot in the painting) and George W. Bush.
Also featured is Luis Posada Carriles, the terrorist who bombed a Cuban jet in 1976 and whom the federal government has failed to extradite for charges.
The faces of Presidents and historical figures past and present (Obama, LBJ, Reagan, Ulysses S. Grant) form a line below a walled-off, post-apocalyptic Native American reservation with the names of the Lakota, Sioux, Hopi, Zuni and Navajo tribes painted, graffiti-like, on a concrete wall. Scattered throughout the mural are the signs and symbols of the following corporations: Nestle, Coca Cola, Wendy’s, KFC, Burger King, Gulf Oil, Exxon, Chase, Shell, and Victoria’s Secret.
This particular triptych’s main centerpiece is flanked by two panels that come as quite a surprise, contrasting in both color and content with the morose yet explosive doomsday prophecy outlined above. The artist, clearly, is able to laugh not only at our incipient extinction, but also at himself and his own creation.
ABOUT ROBERT CENEDELLA: Robert Cenedella was born in Milford, Massachusetts, in 1940. He received his formal education from the High School of Music and Art in New York and The Art Students League of New York. In 1988, he inherited the George Grosz Chair at The League when he was invited to teach his Life Drawing Class and a Painting Workshop. He presently teaches three classes at The League. Following a definite tradition in art, like Brueghel, Daumier, Hogarth and Grosz before him, Robert Cenedella has devoted his art to chronicling the changing rituals and myths of society in contemporary America. In the last 20 years, Cenedella has amassed considerable international praise as well as inclusion in numerous public and private collections. His commissions include works for the famed Bacardi Int’l and ABSOLUT Vodka, a theater piece for Tony Randall, and two murals of historical significance for Le Cirque 2000 Restaurant in New York and Mexico City.
“Art Bastard,” a historical documentary film on his work was released in the spring of 2016 by Concannon Productions, Inc to critical acclaim. It was directed by the writer & director Victor Kanefsky, produced by Chris T. Concannon, and edited by Jim MacDonald.

The event was hosted by Chrissy Bogue and Connie Henriquez from Datenight with Connie and Chrissy.
A panel hosted by Fox News’ Jade Scipioni was held place between 11:000 am – 12:00 pm. Featured panelists included Justin Gelband (JustinGelband.com, trainer to top models, including Victoria’s Secret models & Sports Illustrated models), Dr. Bissoon (Doctor with Integrated Genetic Solutions igscode.com), Glen Tobias (NY Jets Nutritionist, e3wms.com), Gary Goldenberg M.D. (GoldenbergDermatology.com) and Lauren Slayton (Founder of Foodtrainers.com).
One company that stood out and that I had the pleasure of meeting was IGS, Integrated Genetic Solutions. They are changing the way you look at wellness and health. Typically, and this happens to me when you go to the Doctor you get a read-out of your vitamins, hormones and other factors telling whether you are in “normal” range or not. Turns out that even if you’re in normal range, you might not be truly healthy! They go a step further and check your DNA for genetic mutations and then cross check that with your read-out. This allows your doctor to get past the “normal” range and into your own health equation. Pretty cool! You can read more about their system at www.igscode.com.
World-class trainers taught classes throughout the day, including: Erika Bloom Pilates taught by owner Erika Bloom, Tonique taught by owner Sylwia Wiesenberg, Tone House taught by Zack Daley, assisted by Elvira Yambot, Bikram Yoga LES taught by owner Tricia Donegan, Gotham Gym taught by Tatiana Firpo, RIPPED taught by Nick Pags, Belleonbody taught by Carlos Leon, Belleonbody taught by Miller, and CPXperience taught by Courtney Paul of BravoTV.
