Glen-Gery Launches First U.S. Exclusive Edition of Materiality Showcasing Contemporary University Architecture

0

Glen-Gery Corporation, a premier brick manufacturer that is part of Brickworks North America, is pleased to launch the first U.S. exclusive edition of Materiality, a publication that explores the use of bricks in contemporary architecture. Materiality is intended to provoke discussion and interest among architects and designers, professionals and students, and the general reader.

This year’s edition, Materiality: Brick in Contemporary University Architecture, highlights how architects and designers are using brick in campus and community architectural projects across the United States. As with previous volumes, this latest publication offers case studies, illustrated technical essays, and rich photographs and drawings that provide a high-level view of how the architect and designer imagined and executed their project.

“In an era where architectural trends and materials come and go, brick’s enduring beauty, versatility and resilience stand out as a cornerstone in shaping structures that transcend time and inspire generations,” says Tim Leese, director of marketing for Brickworks North America. “Within its pages, Materiality: Brick in contemporary university architecture vividly illustrates this belief, showcasing the most exceptional architectural projects and designs from universities across the U.S.”

Many projects within Materiality feature bricks made by Glen-Gery and showcase the technical nature of how bricks are artfully used and incorporated into outstanding building designs:

●    Zeppos Residential College at Vanderbilt University: A monumental 260,000-square-foot residential building with a collegiate gothic-style structure. Through the use of limestone details, patterned brick and a warm palette of interior materials, the building scale is humanizing and creates a series of public and private spaces, bringing comfort and familiarity to residents.

●    The Iribe Center of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Maryland: Peeling back the layers of this building project, the two-part structure showcases the intricacies of the non-structural application of brick. Through the use of parametric modeling, an abstract pattern was translated into a system of brick that creates the illusion of movement along the interior walls.

●    The Institute for Data Science at University of Rochester: As the signature focus of the University’s strategic plan, the 61,000-square-foot research institute’s design treats each brick as a digital ‘pixel’ of information. Shadows from the projecting bricks activate the facades, creating dynamic, textural surfaces that communicate natural environment data across the days and seasons.

To celebrate the debut of Materiality, Glen-Gery will host a launch event at its global flagship Brickworks Design Studio in New York City on April 18, 2024. The exclusive event will include a discussion, “Shapes to the X Degree,” featuring several architects from across the U.S. The speakers, whose firms and projects are featured in Materiality, will discuss how unique architectural shapes and details can be achieved through the use of masonry.

The launch celebration will also mark the introduction of Glen-Gery’s inaugural architect collaboration program. Event attendees, including architects, designers and students, can enter for a chance to receive a one-of-a-kind collaboration opportunity with Glen-Gery to become an honorary member of its R&D Team. The chosen recipients of the program will have the chance to visit the company’s Mid-Atlantic factory in Pennsylvania where they will work with Glen-Gery to create a unique brick shape of their own design. This customized brick can then serve as the centerpiece for conceptual building project renderings or sketches.

“The latest edition of Materiality showcases the multifaceted role of brick beyond its function as a mere building block. Rather, it can become a catalyst for spaces that nurture creativity and enhance learning experiences. Introducing our first-ever architect collaboration program alongside the launch of Materiality underscores Glen-Gery’s commitment to educating and empowering the next generation of architects and designers,” said Leese.

Larsen Salon Series with Michael Arad and Paul Goldberger at LongHouse Reserve

The Larsen Salon Series, offered by LongHouse Reserve in honor of its founder Jack Lenor Larsen (1927-2020), carried on the tradition of conversations, presentations, and lectures by designers, architects, and artists working at the intersection of art, architecture, design, and craft with architect Michael Arad and author and critic Paul Goldberger on February 29, 2024.

The event convened at the Park Avenue offices of Robert A.M. Stern Architects with architect Michael and Paul, exploring Arad’s latest project, the memorial for the 2015 shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in South Carolina.  Dr. Barratt said, “Memorials are to honor those who have passed but, like LongHouse, they are for the living to experience”.  The evening was made possible by Donna and Ben Rosen, and Stern architect Michael Jones, a member of the LongHouse Reserve board of directors.

“It was important to us”, opened Arad, “to create a space where the community would feel included. For me, someone who’s completely from the outside – I’m not Christian, not black, not local, not from Charleston – to presume what would be the correct design direction without engaging in conversation would have been fruitless…We approached this project by considering the nature of forgiveness.”  Goldberg interjected, “The act of forgiveness transcends those identity markers…Certain things about human experience transcend culture. Even though we don’t normally think of it this way, feeling is itself a function. Gothic cathedrals inspire feeling and emotion. There is a long history of form following feeling.”  In closing the thought-provoking evening, Arad offered, “Public spaces are important in our society – for many reasons – but primarily, I think, because it gives us a shared sense of identity. As an architect, when you can contribute to that, it’s very gratifying.”

Guests included LongHouse President Nina Gillman, Board Members Dianne Benson (President Emerita), Emma Clurman, Gael Towey and Stephen Doyle, Elizabeth and Mark Levine, Deborah Nevins, Peter H. Olsen, Suzanne Slesin, and Dr. Yung Yang Chung, Ronne Fisher, Edgar Gonzaga, Fitzhugh Karol, Eileen O’Kane Kornreich, Rita Meusburger, Lee Skolnick, Jade Netanya Ullmann, and Paul Whelan.

Vanessa Noel hosted a dinner for Mayor Eric Adams at her East 64th Street townhouse. The home supplied an elegant backdrop for the intimate gathering and was completed with cocktails in her new speakeasy and podcast bar. The evening ended with a move upstairs to view rare objects from The Noel Shoe Museum collection. Notable items such as Greta Garbo’s slippers and the Mayor’s own dress shoes added a unique touch to the ambiance by presenting between two tables set with purple cloths, decorated with Purple orchids in sterling mint julep cups, large silver candelabras and tiny votives.  On display were Greta Garbo’s slippers, Turkish wood and mother of pearl bathing platforms, Sioux beaded leggings and moccasins (c. 1890), Chinese lotus shoes, Arlene Dahl’s mary-janes, gold Versace sneakers donated by Danny Wegman, and a pair of the Mayor’s own dress shoes.

About Hope for Depression Research Foundation

HDRF was founded in 2006 by philanthropist Audrey Gruss in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. The mission of the HDRF is to spur the most innovative brain research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and suicide. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, and yet conventional medications today are outdated and do not fully work for 50% of patients.  HDRF is working tirelessly to improve the mental health landscape for every American.  The Foundation has provided more than $75 million through over 200 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented. Currently, HDRF has a potential new class of medication in pilot clinical trials at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Stanford University. HDRF is also funding clinical trials into other novel therapeutics and diagnostic tests at Johns Hopkins, University of San Diego, and the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
