Grabel thanked guests for attending and shared her inspiration for the series: “Spoons are the most beautiful utilitarian object. It’s something you would open your mouth for easily and accept. It’s something we feed our children with, it’s what we feed our family with. When you’re holding a spoon, it extends your hand, which extends your heart, which infuses love and soul into what we cook.”

About the Artist

Patti Grabel is an artist, writer, and producer based in New York City and Bridgehampton. As an artist, she works in a range of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, assemblage, and found-object sculpture. Her life story and passion for cooking and entertaining inform her artistic practice. Her current series, Lick the Spoon, explores imagery that reveals narratives that are at once personal and universal, whimsical and poignant, intimate and public.

Lick the Spoon primarily comprises photographic compositions printed on paper or glass depicting wooden spoons that have been painted, hung to dry on a clothesline, and arranged to tell stories. Patti sometimes incorporates other elements to convey meaning including text and objects. The narrative threads in each work embrace many themes including nourishment, sensuality, creative expression, and the liberating and necessary act of taking chances in life.

In addition to their texture and sculptural quality, Patti uses spoons for their metaphorical richness. They are everyday tools and vessels. Whether part of a set of heirloom silverware or a humble wooden spoon for stirring and serving, they are used around the globe. Importantly, they represent central aspects of Patti’s life—nurturing family and friends and creating in her studio and kitchen.

The notion of licking the spoon aligns with the artist’s credo of embracing adventure, new opportunities, and unexpected paths in both her artistic practice and life. A selection of works from the Lick the Spoon series, which Patti began in summer 2017, were shown at the Chase Edwards Contemporary Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY, in September 2017. One of her pieces was included in a recent benefit event supporting Michael Bolton Charities. “Musical Spoons” has recently joined the private collection of Sound Point Capital, which is located in the Seagram building at 375 Park Avenue New York, New York. “Musical Spoons” was proudly selected for the Museum of Arts and Designs 60th anniversary Diamond Jubilee MAD Ball as part of their silent auction. Her prints are on display atwww.shop.pattigrabel.com.

Roni said, “I have grown up knowing Michael Milken personally and seeing his genius, devotion and commitment to finding a cure for prostate cancer. As I have attended his various events in the past, I have come to realize how crucial it is to educate the younger generation about prostate cancer, give them tools for prevention and highlight the importance of getting involved. The Prostate Cancer Foundation funds groundbreaking research that is finding cures for a cancer that 1 out of 9 men get throughout their lifetime. I am honored to be able to carry forward all their great work and dedicated to helping them find a cure starting with the lunch I am hosting for my friends in the Hamptons Labor Day Weekend to begin to raise awareness.”

Audrey Gruss Hosts White Tea Garden Party and Announces Launch of New Fragrance

On Saturday, August 18th, the sun shined as philanthropist Audrey Gruss hosted 50 of her closest female friends for a White Tea Garden Party at her Southampton home, Fairwind, where guests were given the first look at Body Mist Light, the new product from the Hope Fragrance collection.

One year after Hope Fragrance launched, guests including Judith Giuliani, Sharon Bush, Hilary Geary Ross and Anne Eisenhower, learned how, with their support, Hope was able to launch a new product and were given samples to review in advance of the launch this fall.

Depression is the number one cause of disability worldwide, with 20-million people diagnosed with depression in the US each year, and 350-million people affected globally. However, despite its prevalence and staggering cost to society, it is still misunderstood and under-researched. In order to create an additional source of revenue to accelerate breakthrough depression research, Audrey created the Hope Fragrance collection in the summer of 2017. Over the past 12-months, 100% of net profits from Hope Fragrance have gone directly to Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) – the non-profit organization Audrey founded over a decade ago in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with depression.

Classic white tea sandwiches were passed around, while green linen-covered tables, representing the crisp fresh garden notes of the fragrance, were laden with white coconut cupcakes, white teas, floral bouquets and petit fours decorated with the blossoms of the four white flowers that compose Hope Fragrance’s key notes – gardenia, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley and tuberose.

Guests including Debbie Bancroft, Katherine Embiricos LeFrak, Mai Harrison, Kim Heirston, Carol Mack, Nancy Schaeffel, and the legendary landscape gardener Edwina von Gal, were all dressed in white and roamed the grounds, which featured a white cutting garden, blooming white hydrangeas, a white and green woodland garden, a pool surrounded by white dogwood trees, that had gardenia flowers wired around them, an apple orchard and white birch allee.

Lorraine Bracco Leads 500 Participants at Third Annual Walk of Hope + 5K Run to Defeat Depression

0

On a bright and beautiful summer morning, more than 500 men, women and children – plus a few canine friends – gathered at the starting line of Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) third annual Walk of Hope + 5K Run to Defeat Depression on Sunday, August 5th in Southampton.

The high-energy crowd, which included CBS’s Blue Bloods star Lorraine Bracco, The Watermill Center’s Robert Wilson, and Jenny and John Paulson, set out at 9am to complete a tree-lined 5K course around Lake Agawam. The USA Track and Field-sanctioned event raised more than $250,000 for advanced depression research.

Speaking from the steps of the Southampton Cultural Center just before the starting gun, HDRF Founder and Chair Audrey Gruss said, “Depression is the number-one reason in the world for disability, and the leading cause of suicide. We want people to know there is help, and we need more research if we are going to turn the tide on depression and suicide in this country, so thank you all for coming out to support the cause today.”

Southampton Village Mayor Michael Irving helped kick-off the event and cut the ribbon at the starting line. “The Walk of Hope has gathered the entire community to raise awareness about depression,” he said, adding, “I am so proud to see such an enormous turn-out and outpouring of support from our Village!”

Hope was in abundant supply as everybody sported caps in HDRF’s signature sunshine yellow, along with t-shirts with a custom design by Robert Wilson. The competitive runners – 89 in all – burst through the starting line, followed by families and fun runners. Following the race, Audrey Gruss and her team presented medals for best times in various age categories. Travis Taylor won the best time in the Adult Male category, and Tara Farrell won best time in the Adult Female category. Mark Jacobello, age 13, won for best youth male, and Caroline Clagne, age 13, won for best youth female.

Gruss then presented awards to the top individual fundraisers Scott Snyder and Kim Heirston, and an award for Top Fundraising Team to Arthur Dunnam and Roy Cohen, who named their team after their dog Oskar, who was in attendance.

This year, the Walk of Hope + 5K Run was heralded by the Week of Hope, a village-wide effort in Southampton to raise mental health awareness that started on July 26th, 2018. More than 90 stores in Southampton “turned yellow” by placing two-foot wide yellow statement balloons by their front door to symbolize hope and their commitment to changing the staggering statistics around depression.

The initiative came in the wake of the suicides of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade, as well as local Sag Harbor resident and publicist Jeanine Pepler.  Each shocking loss is a reminder that the suicide rate is rising in the U.S. and that depression is a national health epidemic. Every 12 minutes a person dies by suicide in the United States; depression is the leading cause.

Additional participants included: Southampton Hospital’s Steve Bernstein, Somers Farkas, Jamee and Peter Gregory, Martin Gruss, Campion Platt and his children,Clelia and Tom Zacharias, Marigay McKee and Bill Ford, Erika Bloom, Samantha Gregory and Roberto Benabib with their daughter, Carolina Gregory-Benabib,Dr. Patrick Stubgen and Dana Hammond Stubgen, Janna Bullock, Jessica and Josh Gruss, Karen LeFrak, Caroline Bierbaum LeFrak and Jamie LeFrak and their children.

The Walk of Hope + 5K Run starts the lead-in to the 11th Annual Luncheon Seminar which will be held on November 6th, 2018.  The event will focus on “Brain Health and Wellness – the Science of Self Care,” and will honor public figures speaking out about depression and salute the research progress of HDRF’s acclaimed team of world-renowned neuroscientists.

Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in April 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Today, HDRF is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research and public education.  The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, but despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. The mission of the HDRF is to fund innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder and suicide.

To date, HDRF has provided more than $30-million through over 125 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented.

About depression:

  • In the United States, depression affects over 20-million adults each year – that’s one in ten adults.
  • Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 12 minutes – over 41,000 people per year.
  • Depression is the number one cause of disability worldwide.
  • The current annual cost to US society of treating depression alone is $210-billion – 60% of which represents reduced efficiency at work and costs related to suicide.

The Crisis in Research:

  • Although depression is one of the most serious and prevalent conditions in the US, it is ranked 77th. (out of 250) in the amount of federal funding it receives.
  • Most of the major pharmaceutical companies have discontinued brain research.
  • Talented young brain scientists are being recruited overseas.
  • There are very few privately-funded companies in depression research.

What Makes HDRF Different

  • The Depression Task Force represents the most innovative approach to neuroscience research today.
  • The Task Force has created an unprecedented research plan with each member executing a piece of the plan in their own laboratories.
  • They are not going down well-worn paths of research. They have identified major challenges in the field and are laser focused on the areas where the field is stuck.
  • They share results in real time at a centralized data bank.  This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research.
  • This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.

On Being a Working Mom with two children

Social Life Magazine: Rachel Zoe_ Credit Brian Bowen Smith

“I wish I could say I meditate and do yoga and all that, but I don’t. It’s daily mayhem of work and parenting, work and mommy-ing. I feel like the love I get from my kids, is my me time. It’s not relaxing. I’ve never been more tired in my life.”

On Her Love of The Hamptons

“I grew up going to the Hamptons every summer since I was born. That’s where Rodger and I got engaged, and where Skyler and Kaius both went into the ocean for the first time. I’ve also celebrated almost every birthday and anniversary in the Hamptons since both are just before Labor Day.”

“The Hamptons is the place that means family to me. I told my family I was pregnant with my first child at Nick and Toni’s, and I got engaged at the dock at East Hampton Point, which is now Moby’s. And the memories go on and on.”

On Her Marriage

Social Life Magazine: Rachel Zoe_ Credit Brian Bowen Smith

“We just celebrated our twenty-seventh anniversary and twenty years of marriage. We both have this theory that if your relationship is right, it actually should be the easiest part of your life. Everything else in our life is hard — the challenges of growing a business, having employees, raising children.”

“He and I are actually the easy part. At this point we’ve been together for more than half our lives, so it’s just how we exist. But we still can bicker. There are times we are Lucy and Ricky and other times we are the Notebook couple. We exist with each other and don’t know how to do it any other way. No one knows me better in this world.”

On What She Feels About Style

Social Life Magazine: Rachel Zoe_ Credit Brian Bowen Smith

“I find many times that people on the most limited budgets have the best style because it forces them to be more creative. I believe putting your absolute best self out there is transformative in every way. I think it really makes you look at yourself differently and feel differently. What matters most is how you feel.”
