American singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel performed at Northwell Health’s first Summer Hamptons Evening (SHE) benefitting Northwell’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health. The event was held in Water Mill, NY at the residence of Victoria Moran-Furman, who hosted alongside presenting sponsors Iris and Saul Katz, the benefactors of the Katz Institute for Women’s Health, and celebrity event planner Larry Scott of Lawrence Scott Events.

More than 300 supporters attended, donating $575,000 to help Northwell pioneer solutions that address women’s specific health needs through individualized, integrated care at locations across the metropolitan area — from Manhattan to Montauk. The evening was emceed by Rosanna Scotto, co-host of Fox 5’s Good Day New York.

Northwell President and CEO Michael Dowling addressed guests and expressed the many ways that the Katz Institute has distinguished itself as a national leader in looking at women’s health differently. “The only way to ensure that our communities are healthy is to incorporate into everything we do the knowledge that women and men are different down to a cellular level,” he said. “Funds raised directly benefit important research and programs that will advance and continue to transform treatment and care for women.”

Stacey Rosen, MD, senior vice president of women’s health at Northwell, shared the uniqueness of women’s health issues and the disparities women experience in their medical care. “Women are grossly underrepresented in clinical research,” she said. “This means that we make discoveries about prevention, diagnosis and treatment on men and assume the results are the same for women. But at the Katz Institute, we are disrupting this practice. We see women’s health differently and are shaping the future of healthcare for women and their families.”

0

(Monday, August 5, 2019 – New York, NY) – More than 750 men, women, and gathered on a sunny Sunday morning in Southampton to take part in Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) fourth annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression.

The high-energy crowd set out at 8:30 AM to complete a tree-lined 5K course around Lake Agawam. Race Co-Grand Marshals Sailor Brinkley Cook, Jack Brinkley Cook, HDRF Founder Audrey Gruss, and Board member Arthur Dunnam led the way. The USA Track and Field-sanctioned race raised more than $275,000 for advanced depression research, setting a new record for the event.

Speaking from the steps of the Southampton Cultural Center just before the starting gun, HDRF Founder and Chair Audrey Gruss said, “In the United States, depression is the leading cause of suicide, and affects more than 18-million adults each year. Among teens, depression and suicide rates are the highest on record. We are working to turn the tide on depression and suicide in this country, but we can’t do it without your help, so thank you all for coming out to support the cause today.”

Hope was in abundant supply as everybody sported caps and tech shirts in HDRF’s signature sunshine yellow. The competitive runners, joined by Sailor Brinkley Cook and Jack Brinkley Cook, burst through the starting line, followed by first-time runners, walkers, corporate teams, families, children, and plenty of canine friends.

Following the race, Audrey Gruss and her team presented medals for best times in various age categories. Dan Gargaro won the best time in the Adult Male category, and Tara Farrell won the best time in the Adult Female category. Griffin Schwartz, age 13, won for best youth male (13-15), and Lily Kurmanick, age 13, won for best youth female (13-15). Gruss then presented Arthur Dunnam with an award for Top Fundraising Team, and Scott Snyder with an award for Top Individual Fundraiser. Kim Heirston received the runner up award, and a notable mention highlighting that $10,000 of the funds she had raised had been donated by Oprah Winfrey.

This year’s Race of Hope once again was the grand finale of the Week of Hope, a village-wide campaign in Southampton to raise mental health awareness.  The Week was launched on Thursday, July 25, at Ralph Lauren. Two hundred local business owners including Brook’s Brothers, J. Crew, The White Company, the Southampton Arts Center, the Southampton Chamber of Commerce, and Southampton Town Hall “turned yellow” by placing two-foot-wide yellow statement balloons (environmentally safe and re-usable) by their front door to symbolize hope and their commitment to changing the staggering statistics around depression.

Additional Race participants included: The Watermill Center’s Robert Wilson, Southampton Hospital’s Steve Bernstein, Hilary Geary Ross, Marigay McKee and Bill Ford, Lisa M. Aery, Jamee and Peter Gregory, Martin Gruss, Campion Platt and his children, Samantha Gregory and Roberto Benabib with their daughter, Carolina Gregory-Benabib, Somers Farkas, Janna Bullock, Lucia Hwong Gordon, Carol Mack, Tom and Clelia Zacharias, Susan and Joe Meyer, Serena Bowman, Nona Collin and Karen and Richard LeFrak.

The Race of Hope starts the lead-in to HDRF’s 13thAnnual Luncheon Seminar which will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The event will focus on “Depression and Anxiety; Diagnosis and Latest Treatments,” and will salute the research progress of HDRF’s acclaimed team of world-renowned brain researchers.

Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in April 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Today, HDRF is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research and public education. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, but despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. The mission of the HDRF is to fund innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and suicide.

To date, HDRF has provided more than $30-million through over 125 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented.

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

·        HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.

·        Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.

·        The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.

·        In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of seven leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.

About Depression:

·        In the United States, depression affects more than 20-million adults each year – that is one in ten adults.

·        Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 12 minutes – over 41,000 people per year.

·        Depression is the number one cause of disability worldwide.

·        Depression costs society $210-billion annually – 60% of which represents reduced efficiency at work and costs related to suicide.

The Crisis in Research and Treatment

·        More than 50% of those diagnosed with depression do not respond to existing treatments.

·        Although depression is one of the most serious and prevalent conditions in the US, it is ranked 77th (out of 250) in the amount of federal funding it receives.

·        Most of the major pharmaceutical companies have discontinued brain research.

What Makes HDRF Different

·        The Depression Task Force represents the most innovative approach to neuroscience research today.

·        The Task Force has created an unprecedented research plan with each member executing a piece of the plan in their laboratories. They are not going down well-worn paths of research. They have identified major challenges in the field and are laser-focused on the areas where the field is stuck.

·        They share results in real-time at a centralized data bank. This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research. This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.

Both in their early 20s, the siblings represent a post millennial generation that is not only more open about mental health issues, but also increasingly vulnerable. Rates of depression and suicide among teens have risen sharply in the past decade, according to recent studies.

  • The suicide rate for white children and teens between 10 and 17 was up 70% between 2006 and 2016, the latest data analysis available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Although black children and teens kill themselves less often than white youth do, the rate of increase was higher – 77%.

The Crisis in Research and Treatment

  • More than 50% of those diagnosed with depression do not respond to existing treatments.
  • Although depression is one of the most serious and prevalent conditions in the US, it is ranked 77th (out of 250) in the amount of federal funding it receives.
  • Most of the major pharmaceutical companies have discontinued brain research.

What Makes HDRF Different

  • The Depression Task Force represents the most innovative approach to neuroscience research today.
  • The Task Force has created an unprecedented research plan with each member executing a piece of the plan in their own laboratories. They are not going down well-worn paths of research. They have identified major challenges in the field and are laser-focused on the areas where the field is stuck.
  • They share results in real-time at a centralized data bank. This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research. This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.

(New York, NY – Monday, June 24) – Datuna Art Space held its grand opening Thursday, June 20th from 6pm to 10pm. Founded by acclaimed artist David Datuna and housed in a repurposed taxi cab garage, it is one of the largest privately-owned art centers in Long Island City.

More than 600 people attended the event on Thursday evening, many from the surrounding neighborhood, while notable guests included Richard Mazda, Executive Director of LIC Arts Open; Ja’dee Murphy, Marina Dojchinov, Frankie Silver, Anthoula Katsimatides, Tatum Peacock, and Michele Peacock.

Datuna Art Space was built to be part of the cultural fabric of Long Island City, welcoming walk-ins and presenting a program of community-focused events. The center is scheduled to present up to six shows per year. Datuna’s goal was to create a space that pushes the boundaries of conceptual art by providing a home for nontraditional endeavors. In our current social and political landscape, the aim is to showcase the common denominator, our shared humanity, through art. Datuna hopes to promote understanding of diverse global perspectives in artwork that would not be shown in most galleries.

The opening exhibition includes both new and historic pieces from Datuna, including the interactive installation ‘Cloning Eternity’ recently installed in Washington Square Park  a piece from his Smithsonian-recognized ‘Portrait of America’ flag series, as well as a selection of his signature portraits. The exhibition will remain on display until July 20, 2019.

David Datuna said, “Long Island City has a long history of creating alternative spaces that foster non-traditional creativity. I’m humbled to be in the same neighborhood that was once the home of spaces like 5 Pointz, and I’m looking to continuing a tradition of producing and showcasing art that delivers powerful messages about the human experience.”

About David Datuna

David Datuna is focused on the convergence of art and social consciousness and known for work that advances individual freedom. His signature technique is a network of positive and negative optical lenses suspended over a large-scale layered, collaged and painted image, and he has exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach, Lincoln Center, New York, Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

In 2013 he was the first artist in the world to utilize wearable technology in a contemporary work of art on a monumental scale with ‘Portrait of America,’ which debuted during Art Basel Miami Beach 2013 at The New World Symphony, before going to the Lincoln Center, New York. In 2014, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery featured the work, where record-breaking 27,000 visitors waited to see the work. Smithsonian Magazine noted his work as an important moment in art history.

A 2015 feature-length documentary film that traces Datuna’s journey from Tblisi, Georgia to today won the prestigious ‘Best Feature Film’ award at the Raindance Film Festival.

Following a battle with cancer, Datuna established The Fund for Life, a philanthropic organization dedicated to fighting fatal diseases worldwide. David works with a network of leading physicians, governmental organizations and pharmaceutical companies to advance high-quality medical care and access to advanced medications in the neediest countries worldwide. In conjunction with the Fund, Datuna also established the Life Award, which is given to corporations and individuals for exceptional contributions to sustaining and saving of human lives. In 2016 Gilead Sciences became the first Life Award recipients for their outstanding work in battling Hepatitis C in his native Georgia.

In 2017 Datuna began a new major project to build cultural bridges between the Muslim and Western worlds, through his rendition of the Flag of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – a country that has the most special cultural and religious meaning to much of the Muslims worldwide. His iteration of the Saudi Flag was presented as a gift to his Majesty King Salman.

In support of Georgia’s democracy Datuna gifted his Georgian Flag project named “Georgia – hope of millions” to the Georgian people. The artwork, in the shape and color of the Georgian flag, was created from hundreds of optical lenses of varying magnification that illuminate underlying images of Georgia’s history and political and social culture.

Datuna is well known for his work that forces viewers to consider their point of view. Recent projects have included ‘Make America Stronger Together,’ a mobile art installation located in front of the Trump Tower in New York and unveiled prior to the 2016 US Presidential Election. He combined the themes Make America with Stronger Together and created two monumental works of art to bring a divided nation closer. The work became one of the most iconic images from the 2016 Presidential Elections election cycle and traveled to Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Florida.

In 2017 Datuna channeled the feelings expressed by most Americans and the world community in response to President Trump’s withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement in a new art performance, ‘This Too Shall Pass.’ The artist formed the President’s name in 10-foot ice letters in New York’s Union Square Park, juxtaposing Trump’s challenge to the environment against the environment itself. The ice sculpture melted within minutes, echoing the words attributed to Biblical King Solomon, Sufi poet Sanai, and more recently used by English poet Scott Fitzgerald “This too shall pass,” reflecting on the evanescence of the human condition.
