Datuna Art Space opens in Long Island City, joining neighborhood’s heritage of non-traditional Art Spaces

(New York, NY – Monday, June 24) – Datuna Art Space held its grand opening Thursday, June 20th from 6pm to 10pm. Founded by acclaimed artist David Datuna and housed in a repurposed taxi cab garage, it is one of the largest privately-owned art centers in Long Island City.

More than 600 people attended the event on Thursday evening, many from the surrounding neighborhood, while notable guests included Richard Mazda, Executive Director of LIC Arts Open; Ja’dee Murphy, Marina Dojchinov, Frankie Silver, Anthoula Katsimatides, Tatum Peacock, and Michele Peacock.

Datuna Art Space was built to be part of the cultural fabric of Long Island City, welcoming walk-ins and presenting a program of community-focused events. The center is scheduled to present up to six shows per year. Datuna’s goal was to create a space that pushes the boundaries of conceptual art by providing a home for nontraditional endeavors. In our current social and political landscape, the aim is to showcase the common denominator, our shared humanity, through art. Datuna hopes to promote understanding of diverse global perspectives in artwork that would not be shown in most galleries.

The opening exhibition includes both new and historic pieces from Datuna, including the interactive installation ‘Cloning Eternity’ recently installed in Washington Square Park  a piece from his Smithsonian-recognized ‘Portrait of America’ flag series, as well as a selection of his signature portraits. The exhibition will remain on display until July 20, 2019.

David Datuna said, “Long Island City has a long history of creating alternative spaces that foster non-traditional creativity. I’m humbled to be in the same neighborhood that was once the home of spaces like 5 Pointz, and I’m looking to continuing a tradition of producing and showcasing art that delivers powerful messages about the human experience.”

About David Datuna

David Datuna is focused on the convergence of art and social consciousness and known for work that advances individual freedom. His signature technique is a network of positive and negative optical lenses suspended over a large-scale layered, collaged and painted image, and he has exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach, Lincoln Center, New York, Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

In 2013 he was the first artist in the world to utilize wearable technology in a contemporary work of art on a monumental scale with ‘Portrait of America,’ which debuted during Art Basel Miami Beach 2013 at The New World Symphony, before going to the Lincoln Center, New York. In 2014, the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery featured the work, where record-breaking 27,000 visitors waited to see the work. Smithsonian Magazine noted his work as an important moment in art history.

A 2015 feature-length documentary film that traces Datuna’s journey from Tblisi, Georgia to today won the prestigious ‘Best Feature Film’ award at the Raindance Film Festival.

Following a battle with cancer, Datuna established The Fund for Life, a philanthropic organization dedicated to fighting fatal diseases worldwide. David works with a network of leading physicians, governmental organizations and pharmaceutical companies to advance high-quality medical care and access to advanced medications in the neediest countries worldwide. In conjunction with the Fund, Datuna also established the Life Award, which is given to corporations and individuals for exceptional contributions to sustaining and saving of human lives. In 2016 Gilead Sciences became the first Life Award recipients for their outstanding work in battling Hepatitis C in his native Georgia.

In 2017 Datuna began a new major project to build cultural bridges between the Muslim and Western worlds, through his rendition of the Flag of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – a country that has the most special cultural and religious meaning to much of the Muslims worldwide. His iteration of the Saudi Flag was presented as a gift to his Majesty King Salman.

In support of Georgia’s democracy Datuna gifted his Georgian Flag project named “Georgia – hope of millions” to the Georgian people. The artwork, in the shape and color of the Georgian flag, was created from hundreds of optical lenses of varying magnification that illuminate underlying images of Georgia’s history and political and social culture.

Datuna is well known for his work that forces viewers to consider their point of view. Recent projects have included ‘Make America Stronger Together,’ a mobile art installation located in front of the Trump Tower in New York and unveiled prior to the 2016 US Presidential Election. He combined the themes Make America with Stronger Together and created two monumental works of art to bring a divided nation closer. The work became one of the most iconic images from the 2016 Presidential Elections election cycle and traveled to Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and Florida.

In 2017 Datuna channeled the feelings expressed by most Americans and the world community in response to President Trump’s withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement in a new art performance, ‘This Too Shall Pass.’ The artist formed the President’s name in 10-foot ice letters in New York’s Union Square Park, juxtaposing Trump’s challenge to the environment against the environment itself. The ice sculpture melted within minutes, echoing the words attributed to Biblical King Solomon, Sufi poet Sanai, and more recently used by English poet Scott Fitzgerald “This too shall pass,” reflecting on the evanescence of the human condition.

Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in April 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Today, HDRF is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research and public education. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, but despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. The mission of the HDRF is to fund innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and suicide.

  • Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 12 minutes – over 41,000 people per year.

To date, HDRF has provided more than $30-million through over 125 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented.

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

  • HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.
  • Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.
  • The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.
  • In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of seven leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.

About Depression:

  • In the United States, depression affects more than 20-million adults each year – that is one in ten adults.
  • Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 12 minutes – over 41,000 people per year.
  • Depression is the number one cause of disability worldwide.
  • Depression costs society $210-billion annually – 60% of which represents reduced efficiency at work and costs related to suicide.

The Crisis in Research and Treatment

  • More than 50% of those diagnosed with depression do not respond to existing treatments.
  • Although depression is one of the most serious and prevalent conditions in the US, it is ranked 77th (out of 250) in the amount of federal funding it receives.
  • Most of the major pharmaceutical companies have discontinued brain research.

What Makes HDRF Different

  • The Depression Task Force represents the most innovative approach to neuroscience research today.
  • The Task Force has created an unprecedented research plan with each member executing a piece of the plan in their own laboratories. They are not going down well-worn paths of research. They have identified major challenges in the field and are laser-focused on the areas where the field is stuck.
  • They share results in real-time at a centralized data bank. This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research. This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.

“The Deep End” and “Eat The Night” OPENING SATURDAY, JUNE 29 6-8:30PM at RJD Gallery

Saturday June 29 from 6-8:30 PM a group show titled, “The Deep End” opens at RJD Gallery. The show has sizzling new art by Salvatore Alessi, Frank Oriti, Jorge Santos, Aneka Ingold, Stefanie Jackson, Margo Selski, Alain Vaes and Pamela Wilson. The gallery is located at 2835 Main Street, Bridgehampton NY.  The website for RJD is rjdgallery.com.

During this time 3 separate shows will be going on. They are:

“The Deep End” features works by Aneka Ingold and Margo Selski.
“Still Standing” features works by Frank Oriti, Jorge Santos and Stefanie Jackson
“EAT THE NIGHT” features works by Alexander Klingspor
I had the opportunity to speak with Aneka Ingold  who is an artist participating in “The Deep End”. Here is the  interview:
1. Did the gallery pick the pieces you put in the show or did you?
Richard J Demato curated all the shows and titled them. He put artists together he thought were compatible in style. RJD represents all the artists participating in each show. I think the title “The Deep End” is a suitable title because the artwork contains layers of deeper, symbolic and hidden meanings.
2. Is there a common theme among the pieces in the show?
Margo and I, who are featured in “The Deep End” both create surrealistic narratives that revolve around the female figure. There are elements of fantasy and whimsy, but our work also contains emotive subjects that are very thought provoking and engaging.
3. Have the artists in the show met before?
I have not met the other artists yet. It will be my first time attending an opening at RJD Gallery. I’m really looking forward to seeing the show and getting to know the other artists. I really admire Margo’s work and can’t wait to see it in person.

4. I know you just won the Bennet Prize, which was a group show of sorts. Do you prefer group shows?

The Bennett Prize was a group show of the 10 finalists for the award. I was so honored to participate because these women artists are all extremely good at what they do and have really honed their craft. Group shows are such an amazing opportunity to see what your peers are creating and share ideas about the process of art making.
Here are a few of her paintings from that show:

6. I know your work has a lot of symbolism. Could you talk about one or two of your favorite uses of it in these pieces?

Here is some of the Symbolism in “Ascend”:

To ascend means to move upwards, to rise, to become higher and more noble. The butterflies surrounding the woman are a symbol of transformation and freedom. These winged creatures possess the ability to change and evolve and must go though many phases to become the exquisite creatures that they are. They leave the safety of their cocoon to venture out into an unknown world and discover their own potential. This art piece is about finding the courage to explore untapped realms of our lives. The women in this portrait is reaching outside of the cocoon of her own fears and trusting her own untested wings.

The feature photograph is of Margo’s contribution to the show.

In the interview, Christie talks with Editor in Chief Devorah Rose about her love of horses, singing with her family, new products that are joining her healthy prosecco brand, Bellissima, and more.

  • On Billy Joel giving her a horse: ”When I was married to Billy, one Christmas morning I awoke to find a white horse with a red ribbon waiting for me on the lawn. And it was the first horse of my very own. Belle Star was her name, and I absolutely loved having a horse that I got to know on a deep level. I knew everything about her: what she was afraid of, what she liked. I would groom her myself, and I just loved that.”
  • On Polo: “I think it’s amazing to see the horses and the riders galloping around. They are so passionate, and I love activities that bring people together, especially when it brings people outside. Polo is a beautiful combination of these two things. Being outside, watching horses, enjoying the summer day, and being part of a tradition are things I enjoy.”
  • On singing with her daughter: One activity she delights in is singing with her songstress daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. “Alexa loves to do harmony,” Christie says, “She has me do the soprano part and then she does all the harmony around it. The harmony part is the most difficult. And of course, I love it because she does all the work and makes me sound good!”
  • On singing with Billy Joel: “Many years after our divorce, Billy would still come to my house for the Christmas singalong and play the piano, and all our friends would come over and sing Christmas carols. Singalongs are one of my favorite things to do. And you know that’s what makes everybody happy,” Christie says.

Hope for Depression Research Foundation Presents “Bullying and Mental Health” – Second Annual Mental Health Symposium

The country’s leading depression research organization, Hope for Depression Research Foundation, (HDRF) hosted their Second Annual ‘Next Generation Mental Health’ Panel Discussion and Q&A on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at the Paley Center for Media.

Moderated by HDRF Executive Director Louisa Benton, the panel was held during Mental Health Month and focused on the topic “Bullying and Mental Health.” The event convened leading psychiatrists, anti-bullying experts, and advocates to share their viewpoints and answer questions from an audience of over 100 people including teens, parents, social workers, guidance counselors and more.

The panel included Dr. Eric Nestler, MD, PhD, the Director of the Friedman Brain Institute at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; Dr. Angela Diaz, MD, PhD, MPH, Director of the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center; Jill Brown, President and Founder of Generation Text Online; Dr. Susan M. Swearer, PhD, Professor of Educational Psychology and a Professor of School Psychology at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln; Jeff Lima, actor and anti-bullying activist; and Emily Marrero, student at SUNY Morrisville and graduate of the Police Athletic League of New York City.

The panel discussed issues relevant to bullying and victimization including immediate and long-term effects on health and quality of life, such as depression and suicide. They also covered ways to prevent bullying, what you can do if you think your child or friend is being bullied, and how to talk to someone if you are being bullied.

Actor and advocate Jeff Lima reported his own personal experience with extreme bullying while growing up in Spanish Harlem, NYC, while Emily Marrero told the panelists and audience her experiences of helping a friend who was being victimized at school in New York City.

Bullying and Depression: A Known Link

In this climate, it is extremely important to understand the long-term effects of bullying, and how it can affect mental health. One in five children experiences being bullied at school according to a 2014 report from the CDC. Children who have been bullied are six times more likely to develop depression and two times more likely to develop anxiety. Depression and suicide are alarmingly in the rise among teens, and while the reasons are complex, bullying can be a trigger.

How to recognize signs of bullying

The panel agreed that although there is no one way to identify someone who is being bullied, there are known signs of depression that everyone, parents, and teachers included, should be aware of.  These signs include increased anxiety, missing school, loss of interest in pleasurable activities, changes to eating habits, and changes to sleeping habits. Jeff Lima spoke to this from his personal experience, as when he was getting bullied, he would skip school and one day was picked up for truancy at a bookstore.

How to speak to the child

For children who are being bullied, the panel agreed it was vital that children have access to adults who can listen and help – whether that is a parent, teacher, guidance counselor or otherwise. For many children admitting to an adult that they are being singled out for abuse is difficult. When approaching a child, they must be direct but also allow themselves to be led by the child. Adults should let the child direct them in how they want them to help and listen to whether they want you to speak to someone at the school, or whether they just want the adult to listen. For parents, it was advised that they are open with their children and tread softly, as children are often most reserved when with their parents.

How to stop a bully

The panelists spent time answering questions from the young members of the audience who were concerned with how to stop bullying, and how to combat its effects.   The panel agreed that when it is unsafe to confront a bully, deflecting the situation by making up an excuse to pull the victim away from the situation is a valid tactic.  Jill Brown said in other cases if they see bullying occur, they may want to gently ask the bully, “how do you think those insults make them feel.”  Friends of those who are bullied should make a point of telling them what makes them special and reinforce the fact that they are a valued part of the group.  Bullying leads to depression because it is isolating, and humans are social beings.

How schools and community can help

Early prevention is critical, and Angela Diaz advises that schools have access to integrated primary care and mental health professional who can detect early signs of mental unwellness or stress. If that isn’t available,Jill Brown stressed that the importance of schools or youth organizations led by trusted adults who are committed to safe conversation. She recommended that these groups implement a framework of listening to the child, helping them identify their emotions and setting new mental health guidelines for coping with stress and victimization.

It was then announced that Anni Spacek from East Hampton High School and the students of the Police Athletic League College Access Program were the two winners of the student video contest where young adults had been asked to create a short film about bullying.
