Sandra Chevrier: CAGES AND THE VOID OF COLORS August 8th – August 29th, 2020

0

NEW YORK CITY – Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Cages And The Void Of Colors, a solo exhibition by Montreal-based artist, Sandra Chevrier. Cages And The Void Of Colors will be Chevrier’s inaugural solo exhibition at the gallery, exhibiting a collection of 16 captivating new portraits from the artists well known The Cages series, in which the artist merges elements of hyperrealism with well known comic book characters, creating stylized figures which speak to our own internal struggles and self
imposed limitations. By juxtaposing imagery of conflict, triumph and defeat within her work, the artist illustrates the humanity within the superhero, a visual reminder that we all carry something powerful within
ourselves.

Setting the scene for the exhibition, Chevrier stated the following about our collective new normal and her inspirations behind the new body of work,

“Beneath the quiet calm of the end of the world; an army of humans are pacing through their apartments. As in the past, it is a life in black and white where one hides from the plague and the war. In some kind of
Apocalypse, between one world and the next; we hold still, we stand strong. We are inexperienced warriors waiting on a shapeless future in a shapeless present. We can only hope for a new chapter, a better one and
we are ready to fight for it.

In a dream, we leave behind the corpses of Avarice, Injustice, Hatred and Prejudice, there would be no more black waters nor smoking guns and burning forests, but more empathy, solidarity, and Love. We’ve been
drawing millions of rainbows and brandishing them to the skies like weapons in hope of an answer. We are the answer. We are the cure. We are the heroes.

Let’s look outside ourselves. We’ve been sitting in a void of colours for way too long.

This show is now closed but please check out Sandra’s website and get more inspired: Sandra Chevrier: https://www.sandrachevrier.com/

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Sandra Chevrier is a Canadian contemporary / pop urban artist, known for her captivating portraits of women from The Cages series. Born in 1983, Chevrier got her Bachelor’s degree in visual and media arts from UQAM – L’Université du Québec à Montréal. As a self-taught artist, Chevrier first fell in love with art as a child, to her; art rapidly became a language on its own.

At first, she draw sketches of eyes, all the time. This initial obsession is highly visible in her present work. Sandra likes to describe herself as a “gaze collector” and her work; a dichotomy or a dance between power and fragility, freedom and captivity, the poison and the cure. Her work is exhibited internationally and her artworks are now in art collections worldwide.

Windows GR Auction presented by Element 7

0

A few months ago Grand Rapids, Michigan, experienced damaging riots as did many cities across the county. In a few of those cities, the protective boards were painted by local artists and Grand Rapids was one of them! If you drove through the city during the few weeks the project was alive, the city looked so neat! This transformation was named Open Windows. There were 100-200 windows boarded up and painted – hatred being transformed by art is such an inspiring and wonderful function art can have.

““Listen Learn Grow” was birthed from a conversation with a black artist. She encouraged the idea to listen, listen, listen and to have hard conversations that serve as stepping stones in this monumental moment of action, advocating for the Black Lives Matter movement. I always strive to bring joy and color to whatever I create. My florals are watery and dripping down to serve as a reminder of the pain and brokenness in the midst of this movement. Flowers are bright, they are symbols of regrowth and beauty; so are people. We all serve an integral part of making steps forward and allowing voices and “lights” to shine and to be bright and hopeful like a group of flowers, making a bold statement. I hope this piece invokes joy, and hope, and a reminder to listen, learn, and grow going forward.”

As a result of Open Windows, the Grand Rapids-based artist-run collective, Element 7, was created with the intention to empower the local BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Art Community and catalyze social change. Through projects like WindowsGR, Open Windows, and beyond, Element 7 works to support the vision and voice of artists working for comprehension of a diverse humanity. These initiatives help to mobilize one another in order to inspire change in our community.

Element 7’s initial artistic organization and support is is an auction they have comprising of the WindowsGR paintings. The first run of the auction ended last Saturday but because it was well received it has re-opened witha few new paintings. The creation of these painting is photographed below. The auction runs until Friday. Check it out at here!

Humans have a lot to think about. As riots are going on we are dealing with a Pandemic. The local GR Arts organization, Avenue for the Arts, says,

“During this pandemic, artists continue to find creative solutions to the constraints created by Covid-19. In the spring there were various livestream concert series. Then the summer saw socially distanced re-openings of GRAM, Frederik Meijer Gardens, and even a gallery’s grand opening on South Division. Now the walls of our city are sporting brand new murals. Artists’ need to create will not extinguish, no matter the challenges presented to them. And the myriad benefits of experiencing art will only become greater during a time of crisis. As we move into the fall, I hope that Grand Rapidians will continue to find ways to bring creativity into each others’ lives. That’s been our mission at the Avenue for the past fifteen years, and the pandemic is no exception.” – Zachary Trebellas via Avenue for the Arts

All these artists came down to Grand Rapids to paint because we had an opportunity to talk with one another. May life persist!

Getting your life in shape is a full out momentous occasion when it comes to working with Larry. His one-on-one consultations vary from weekly talks on how to climb up financial ladders to daily motivating steps discussing the power of yoga and meditation. As a genuine fitness enthusiast who is ranked in the top 5 percent of Crossfit Athletes in the world, he certainly knows a thing or two about fitness as financial portfolios. “Fail to plan and you plan to fail. It’s time to take control of your life and live your
best life ever,” proudly proclaims the coach.

The entrepreneur community he has built from coast to coast admires his

His approach is unique in structure when it comes to giving a client a sense of having it all. For as much as he stresses growth, he also knows people who work with him need to have a sense of stability, which is why he combines techniques. And the moment you have that sense of being grounded the world of business opens up to limitless possibilities.

“If you don’t come at your highest level daily then how do you grow? It’s not just about my plan. It’s why I have an issue with other coaches who just talk about following their plan that is just their routine,” says White. “It’s about us working together to create the best opportunity. So many people just become jack of all trades and master of none. Doing that you just become dead inside. It’s not about me. It’s about you. It’s what so many people get wrong. If you don’t have the right tools then everything else is irrelevant.”

With Larry White, anything is possible in the world of real estate.

Below is an interview I gave Larry based on the information here.

1.Do you know Bileyda Perez (Real Estate Professional – NYUndressed.com just published a story about her)?

Yes I have know Bileyda for about 8 years now. I used to be the Regional Vice President of a large real estate firm and Bileyda helped to manage my Miami operation

2.Athleticism is referenced a lot while describing you. Is your focus being an athletic coach, a life coach, a house finder or a mix of them all (and maybe something else?) –

No I am not specialized in athletics although it has been a huge part of my success and I believe it teaches great skills for life. I focus on Business Coaching with a niche in real estate. In that coaching I believe we have to be well rounded physically, mentally, and spiritually as well. Most of my coaching sessions start by me asking what their morning looks like. We build a strong foundation to start ever day!

3. Can you say a few words about your childhood? IE – what led you to end up doing the coaching you are doing now?

I had an amazing childhood which has led to an even better life! As I was growing up and checking off all the boxes such as: straight A’s, varsity letter man, college, degree, corporate leadership etc… I realized I was living and building everyone else’s dream, but not mine. Real estate has allowed me the financial freedom to build my empire while I help others do the same.

4. Do you have someone pick out art for either showcase homes or homes you have sold?

Depending on the house we are selling, staging is a must to separate your house from the competition. In the past we have partnered with a local artist and used the house as an exhibit to drive attention to the house as well as the art work!

5. Does your house have much art? Yes Love art work.

6. What kind of art does it have?

I don’t have one particular type. Each piece speaks to me and fits a different room of our house. My favorite is an Albert Einstein picture. It was the first original piece of art work I purchased for myself, so it has a lot of symbolism behind it.

7. I see you play guitar. Do you immerse yourself in any other arts?

I actually just started playing the guitar on my last birthday. I have always wanted to, and thought it was never to late to learn. I also do a ton of fitness, yoga, meditation, and try to get back into nature as much as possible.

8. How long have you been playing?

1 year

9. What are some favorite songs?

So far I can only play one song. One of my favorite songs is Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.” I learned to play that first and it brings joy to my heart with each strum.

10. Have you played for many people at once?

NEVER!!! That scares me with my in-expereince, but I will work that directly.

11. Would you like to?

Absolutely, I host a number of retreats and music is a large part of it. I would love to be able to play for others.

12. Do you write songs?

Not at all.

National Wine Day

0

Today is National White Wine Day and a great reason to turn to Sandra’s Wine Life for which wine varieties pair best with different types of foods.

If you enjoy heavy cheeses like Camembert, Gouda or Manchego, Guibord recommends a full, fruity wine like a Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio or Viognier, which will carry the flavor best. If you’re keen on something lighter like Feta, Goat Cheese or Mozzarella, she believes you should grab an AlbariñoRieslingor the increasingly popular Sauvignon Blanc due to their citrus notes and “mouthwatering acidity that perfectly complements these cheeses.

For that backyard meal like a summer pasta or seafood, she recommends a glass of Vermentino. This particular varietal is fresh, bright, acidic and lemony making it perfect for pasta with pesto and fresh tomatoes or light seafood like Grilled Shrimp.

Sandra warns that most people over-chill their white wines. By taking a bottle of white out of the refrigerator 15 minutes before serving allows the flavors of the wine to come forward and not be overpowered by the coldness.

Robin Baker Leacock, Daughter in Law of Cinéma Verité Founder Launches Film on PBS, “Stella & Co: A Romantic Musical Comedy Documentary About Aging”

(New York, NY, June 9, 2020) – Filmmaker Robin Baker Leacock’s new documentary is airing on PBS nationwide, “Stella & Co: A Romantic Musical Comedy Documentary About Aging.” The film is a celebration of the extraordinary life of her almost 104-year old mother, Stella, and a group of vibrant seniors — ages 75 to 105 — living their best lives. The film delivers a thought-provoking and positive look at what it means to age in modern times, through humor, music and storytelling. The 50-minute film, Baker Leacock’s fifth, is produced and directed by Baker Leacock. The film is set to air on PBS New York (WLIW) on July 22, 2020 at 10 PM.

Unlike other cultures that venerate their elders, Americans tend to place older people aside. Upon spending time with Stella and her friends, it’s quite clear that seniors have much to offer and have earned a central role in our society — one of the seniors, Estelle Craig, or ‘Stella,’ has written five books since the age of 100. Through conversation and an inside look at a dynamic senior residence and through the joyful life experiences of some of its residents, we gain a new perspective on growing old.

“Stella & Co is about looking at our elders through a different lens,” comments Baker Leacock. “My hope is that this film will encourage people to remember the great treasure we have in our older generation. They have accomplished extraordinary things and have much to teach us, far past their retirement years. We are living in extraordinary times, where our aged population is vulnerable as never before. The goal is to offer viewers a much-needed forward-thinking shift in perspective.  Aging is a subject that affects all of us.”

Stella & Co is Robin Baker Leacock’s fifth film, having directed “It Girls”, PBS film, “A Passion for Giving,” “Stella is 95,”and “I’ll Take Manhattan.” “It Girls” is a documentary film about fashion that aired nationally in the U.S. in 2002. “A Passion for Giving” is a documentary film about philanthropy, focusing on various charities and the simple gesture of helping others. It aired in the fall of 2009 on PBS. “I’ll Take Manhattan” is a comedy about Native Americans and Wall Street. Her films have been shown at the Berlin, the Hamptons, and Montreal Film Festivals. Robin is married to filmmaker Robert Leacock, who shot Madonna’s “Truth or Dare,” Al Pacino’s “Looking for Richard” and Christy Turlington’s “Catwalk.” His father, the late Richard Leacock, was a pioneer in cinéma verité documentaries.

ART MARKET SF / NYC May 23rd – June 13th, 2020

0

NEW YORK CITY – Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Art Market SF / NYC , a group exhibition. Due to the postponement of Art Market San Francisco, originally scheduled to take place in April, we wanted to take the opportunity to share new and recent works which were made especially for the fair.

Dennis Brown (also known by his pseudonym Bagger43) is a San Francisco based artist who studied illustration, working as a full-time designer and utilizing his free time to pursue self generated art projects. The playfulness and lowbrow style of Oakland based Jeffrey Cheung’s contorted nude figures has quickly gained traction within the Bay Areas s ever-changing art scene. Cheung’s humor translates across his works, which depict a celebration of love, acceptance and equality.

San Francisco based Kim Cogan’s work explores the many mood and environs of American cities through the use of oil paint, capturing contemporary life in all its beauty and absurdity. Bay Area artist Jessica Hess is a hyperrealistic landscape painter. Her depictions of the urban environment celebrate the art of graffiti and explore themes of censorship through a fine art lens of oil painting and gouache.

Erik Jones is an Illinois based artist, who investigates figure, form and composition in his works, intermixing elements of hyperrealism and geometric expressionism. Rendering elements of his subjects in a hyperreal aesthetic, they are surrounded by a colorful swell of shapes, color and form. San Francisco based Sean Newports sculptures deal with perceived notions of reality and the idea of creating a digital aesthetic through analogue processes. Working primarily as a woodworker, Newport has honed his skills as a carpenter and fine artist over the past decade.

Joel Daniel Phillips is an American artists whose work focuses on the tenets of classical draftsmanship. Inspired by the depth and breadth of human experience, he strives to tell the personal and societal histories etched in the faces of those around him. Pennsylvania based Crystal Wagner combines 2-D and 3-D form, alternative use of materials and hybrid approaches to printmaking to create amorphous sculptural works and large scale installation.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there will be no opening reception for the exhibition, and the gallery will be closed to the public. The exhibition will be on view through the gallery website. Although the Instagram live walk through of the show is over it’s recording can be viewed at On “View”: Saturday, May 23rd, 2020 – Saturday, June 13th, 2020 via their website.
