Joel Daniel Phillips – A Solo Exhibition: Killing the Negative, October 17th-November 7th 2020

0

NEW YORK CITY – Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Killing the Negative, a solo exhibition by Tulsa, OK-based artist, Joel Daniel Phillips.
Consisting of a new series of charcoal and graphite drawings meditating on
Government-censored photographs by the Farm Security Administration
(FSA) during the Great Depression, the exhibition is Phillips’ fifth solo exhibition with the gallery and his debut New York solo exhibition.

In early 2019, Phillips’ stumbled on a photograph by Walker Evans with a giant, black, Baldessari-esque circle marring the center of the image. The black void wasn’t an addition to the image, but rather a subtraction: Someone had taken a hole punch to the original negative.

Phillip’s work centers around questions of truth, historical amnesia, and the veracity of the stories we tell ourselves about our collective pasts. The broader FSA images are of course, well known, and images such as
“Migrant Mother” by Dorothea Lange have become some of the most recognizable and important images in the American photographic lexicon. Less known, however, is the process by which these images were selected for publication: Roy Stryker was the head of the FSA, and was tasked with deciding which of the eventual 145,000 commissioned photographs would see the light of day. For the first 4 years of the project, many images he deemed unworthy were “killed” by punching a hole in the original negative.

Killing the Negative explores Stryker’s destructive editing process as a commentary on truth and the veracity of the historical record. His enormous act of editing bears more import than we know to our understanding of our history. It calls into question our reliance on this record, bringing into startling clarity the power that a
single individual had to shape the collective understanding of an entire nation. When translated into drawings, the physical subtraction created by the hole-punch acts as a further visual addition, an indelible record
of the shaping of the narrative, with the black, circular void both destroying the original image and simultaneously creating an entirely new one.

The larger contemporary political conversation is one that makes many of the questions from the era of the Great Depression deeply resonant; questions of race, class, labor and compensation, land ownership, stratified socio-economics and ecological protection are embedded in the original censored FSA photographs. These almost 100-year-old images are astonishingly contemporary in nature, and when recontextualized as a series of drawings, call into question our assumptions about the truth of our collective past, while simultaneously reflecting on the fabricated foundations of historical narratives in the modern political sphere.

The gallery will be open by appointment only. In order to ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff, please note that masks are legally required for entry. To schedule an appointment, please click HERE.

About the Artist

Joel Daniel Phillips is an American artist whose work focuses on the tenets of classical draftsmanship employed in monumental formats. Inspired by the depth and breadth of human experience, he strives to tell the personal and societal histories etched in the world around him. The focus of his work centers on questions of truth, historical amnesia, and the veracity of the stories we tell ourselves within our communal narrative and our collective pasts. The drawings are re-contextualizations of archival historical material, and walk the line between describing a shared, forgotten history and prophesying a terrifying, Orwellian future.

Phillips’ work has been exhibited at institutions and galleries across the United States as well as abroad, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Philbrook Museum of Art, Tacoma Art Museum, The Art
Museum of South Texas, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Gilcrease Museum of Art, and the Ackland Art Museum, among others. In 2016 he was the 3rd prize recipient in the triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition
from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and in 2019 he was again a finalist for the same prize. The artist is currently a Fellow at the Tulsa Artist Fellowship in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Phillips’ drawings can be found in the public collections of the Ackland Art Museum, the Urban Nation Museum For Urban Contemporary Art, the West Collection, the Gilcrease Museum, the Fort Wayne Museum of
Art and the Denver Art Museum.

Bruce Weber, James Goldcrown, Alexandra Richards, Cavier Coleman, Edward Granger and More Join Project Zero’s Artsy Auction

0

Some of the world’s most notable artists have come together for Project Zero’s online art auction that is up on Artsy. The likes of Harland Miller,Bruce Weber, James Goldcrown, Cavier Coleman, Mauro Perucchetti, Edward Granger and more have all donated unique and limited-edition pieces to help raise funds for the oceanic organization whose goal is to “Turn the Tide” on the climate crisis.

The auction supports Project Zero’s work to create a global network of ocean sanctuaries to provide resilience to the devastating effects of the climate crisis. Stretching from Antarctica to the Bering Strait, and mapped out by the world’s leading marine scientists, this global network of projects will be able to restore our ocean’s health, and set us on a path to create a sustainable future for life on Earth.

Project Zero has been supported by an all-star line-up over the years that includes some of the biggest names in entertainment including The Rolling Stones, Zachary Levi, Jack Black, The Chainsmokers, Alan Cumming, Cara Delevingne, Sienna Miller and Austin Mahone who have supported through Charity Buzz and other efforts for the organization.

Bidding for this auction began on Wednesday, September 30, 2019 and commence on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at 4:00pm BST (11:00am EST).

Click here to be brought to the auction.

I had an opportunity to ask one of the artists a few question so I asked them to Cavier Coleman. His artwork is pictured at the head of this post and the interview is below!

Cavie Colman

1. Where is a good place to learn more about Project Zero?

The Project Zero website at www.weareprojectzero.org is a great place for information, to see who is involved, and learn more about the projects – and make an investment in the ocean, of course.   You can also follow @projectzero on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date with events and special projects like our Artsy auction.

2. How did this auction and Project Zero come together?

I became an Ambassador of Project Zero a few months ago and totally support the mission to protect and restore the ocean to fight the climate crisis.   I think we’re all concerned about the future of our planet, so we all came together to do something to be a part of the solution.

3. Are you or any of the other participating artists making other efforts to help the climate crisis?

I can’t speak for the other artists.  I support Project Zero’s work and use my artwork as a platform to encourage conversation.  My piece in the Project Zero x Artsy auction is titled Global Warming.  I also do what I can in my everyday life to reduce my carbon and plastic footprints to help the ocean.

4. What are a few things the average person can do to help “Turn the Tide?”

Invest in the ocean!  The ocean is our biggest ally in the fight against the climate crisis.   Project Zero is working to secure a global network of ocean sanctuaries and they all need investment to secure them for the good of the planet and the people living around them.    Reducing your carbon footprint is another important way you can help.   Really simple things can really add up, like turning off the water when you brush your teeth, switching out lightbulbs, taking public transportation, walking or riding a bike, to reducing your consumption of meat.   And most importantly – vote for politicians who believe in science and will lead us to a sustainable future.

While guests create their own Microcosm, they will enjoy brunch with dishes such as Plato’s Choice with smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, rosemary, olives and arugula on a croissant or Pork Guokui, sliced flatbread with pork, and a specialty tea from the MENO team like Twilight, a coffee meets juice creation with lemon juice and coffee.
This event will be held bi-monthly at MENO and the pricing begins at $75, which includes one brunch dish, a tea or coffee from MENO’s menu and the microcosm.

Scott Listfield: Quarantine – a Solo Exhibit On View from September 19 – October 10

0

Spoke Art is pleased to present Quarantine, a solo exhibition be Scott Listfield. Quarantine will be Listfield’s second solo exhibition at
Spoke Art, where he will be exhibiting a new series of paintings which chronicles the adventures of the artists central protagonist.
The lone figure, an astronaut, is depicted navigating a postapocalyptic landscape reflective of our current world. Symbolic references to the COVID-19 pandemic, protests in response to the
murder of George Floyd, and general unease over the American political climate abound. Protected by their helmet and suit, the astronaut explores these environments, thoughtfully observing the chaos yet persevering.

About the exhibition, Listfield states, “I began working on this series of paintings while the world was in lockdown. Most of the planet was stuck at home riding out a pandemic unlike anything we’ve experienced in 100 years. City streets were empty, buildings boarded up, coyotes and tumbleweeds inhabited downtown. I began to hear from people that the real world was looking more and more like one of my paintings. Needless to say, this gave me pause. It’s always good as an artist to feel like you’re in the zeitgeist. It’s another thing entirely to get the uneasy feeling that you’ve predicted a fairly bleak present. I was struggling with what to do
with this knowledge.

My work is very much about exploration. All I’ve had to explore recently is the darker depths of my own mind. And so in these new paintings, the astronaut that roams my work wanders through deserted cities literally tipping and falling. Where gravity has its own free will. Bits and pieces of a recognizable pop culture landscape fall through these scenes sideways, toppling along with statues.

Things break. Things burn. But the astronaut, like us, keeps going.”

The gallery will be open by appointment only. In order to ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff, please note that masks are legally required for entry.

Ambassador Acisclo Valladares Molina Brings Dignity to Politics Across the World

0

For decades Acisclo Valladares Molina has created a legacy to be admired. His strength to unite people across the world has brought unity and prosperity that will be remembered for years to come.

Currently, he serves his country as the official Ambassador of Guatemala to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Concurrent in Ireland, Arabian Gulf States and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the permanent representative to the African Union. He takes the position on with incredible pride. While most take the role in stride, Molina has built up an incredible resume for decades that has helped launch the leader in to great moments of success.

Building bridges of unity has been his number one goal as his position has allowed him to create a notable increase in British tourism to Guatemala. Helping grow the economy with travel has brought in funds and work for those in his home borders. It is perhaps one of his biggest accomplishments because of the great benefit he has brought to the people.

Born in Guatemala on September 17, 1946, he is a respected Guatemalan lawyer, notary, teacher, diplomat, and politician. He graduated in Law from the University of Salamanca, Spain in 1969. And then he obtained a postgraduate degree in Canon Law from the Gregorian University of Rome in 1970. For over 43 years he has professionally worked. Beyond his impressive political resume, he also currently is a columnist at Diario de Centroamérica.

In addition, the ambassador has been awarded several prestigious certificates to attest great deeds which include: the Grand Cross of the Order of Pius IX, which is the highest Pontifical decoration; the Cross of Melitense Merit of the Sovereign Military and Hospital Order of Saint John of Jerusalem by the Order of Malta; and named Grand Officer of the Order of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, of the Republic of Panema.

At the beginning of Ambassador Acisclo Valladares Molina’s term in the United Kingdom, British tourism to Guatemala was inconsequential. With great strides and strong political ties it now stands together with that of Spanish tourism as the top tourism income from Europe to Guatemala. The country is now included in British universities as a destination for Spanish learning students.

During the ambassador’s term ACTIS, known as the British investment fund, has invested over $300 million. It makes a significant difference to the country. In addition, the policy implemented by Ambassador Acisclo Valladares Molina working with the Arabian Gulf has given grand results when the Guatemalan Embassy to Israel was moved to Jerusalem. It was here that Guatemalan relations with the Gulf have been at their best, and cardamom exports have increased to $600 million. Another great example of his work was demonstrated in 2010 when Guatemala exported $300,000 worth of banana produce to the United Kingdom. In 2019, these exports grew to $7.2 million, an increase of 2,300% as documented.

The ambassador loves his career as much as his family. He has been noted to be an extraordinary human being and a loving father of four children. He truly is excelling at everything and always with dedication. His popularity has skyrocketed over the past decade because of these impactful factors.  Not only has he been selected among Guatemala’s ten most influential leaders in 2016 by different publications, he also has expressed a desire to continue to help the people grow in wealth, business, and tourism well into the future.

There is truly no stopping what he can do to continue to make the country prosper and grow in powerful international relations.

Artist Olga Ozerskaya’s vibrant Works Are A Welcome Escape from COVID 19

0

When Olga Ozerskaya creates, her primary focus is on storytelling. she does not impose the story of her works on the viewer. Rather, her images are collages comprised of printed contemporary advertisements that allow the viewer to draw their own conclusions about their meaning. Much of the time, her work is rooted in consumer branding and has a pop art quality similar to that of Andy Warhol or Roy Lichtenstein. It can be differentiated though by its mixed-medium, a truly unique approach made from digital animation and printed illustration.

Ozerskaya’s works are represented by visioner.art gallery which focuses on original works and editions by iconic blue chip names and emerging talents. A good representation of her works can be found on the gallery website (www.visioner.net) or on Artsy (www.artsy.net/visioner).

Olga’s works are refreshing especially during the COVID-19 pandemic as one can almost get lost in the brightness and jovial nature of her depictions despite these bleak times.

“I want people to feel recharged after viewing my work from the series I created during COVID. I’m a colorist by nature. That’s where I source my energy for the work. I often choose to incorporate bright colors, but I wanted people to be inspired in this difficult time to use art as a tool to bring them joy. From my perspective, what else can I do to give back?  I would like my art to be a contribution,” says Ozerskaya.

Ozerskaya’s art has a whimsical quality, and it is clear she is hyper-focused on feminine beauty and imagery. She is clearly a feminist who is able to depict the strength yet beauty of women in their natural form.

“While the idea of portraying women archetypes came before COVID, I continued to create these works during quarantine. They are important now because we’ve all had to go within our inner world during this time and understand our own personal spirit and who we are as individuals,” she adds.

Together with Visioner.Art, Olga conducted her first online solo exhibition. Her women archetypes series of works were part of the exhibition “The flower girls.” The series examines women archetypes that prevail in contemporary society. Archetypes are models based on patterns and images that represent tendencies in us, which were first introduced by Carl Jung as a way to understand how our psyche contributes to our behavior.

“My new series on women archetypes was inspired by legendary feminist artists Barbara Kruger, Judy Chicago, and Tracey Emin. Each art work is a visual code – flower and text describing a certain women archetype. Every human has their own set of these codes. The key to self-acceptance is to understand them,” says Ozerskaya.

Her work Wish you were here, made from acrylic print on canvas, is a stark contrast to the harsh realities of the pandemic and even many of the morbid advertisements we see today. Another piece in the series, You are my heaven, is also playful and upbeat. The white orchids in the digital collage have a photographic quality and are so abundant that it makes the viewer want to lay down in them. The lettering in this series resembles the hype wear brand Supreme, and the words have the appearance of floating.

Ozerskaya also has not stopped creating during COVID-19. Like her upbeat work, she continues to have a positive perspective and mindset on her future. As a result, she will be featured in Visioner.Art Gallery’s exhibit “From Warhol to Quinn with Everything in Between.” The exhib it will be showcased in this year’s first ever Hampton’s Virtual Art Fair (HVAF) where Olga’s work will be presented together with iconic blue-chip names like Andy Warhol, Eric Fischl, Nathaniel Mary Quinn among others and can be viewed at https://www.hamptonsvirtualartfair.com/visioner-art/
