A Worthwhile Investment: The Art of Vikash Jha

Vakish Jha is a contemporary artist and investment banker, based out of New York metropolitan area. He currently has an online show titled, Voyages of Reflections, on MvVO ART. It runs through August 8, 2021.

MvVO ART announced its first solo show, Voyages of Reflections, on Artsy, featuring the work of Vikash Jha for one week (August 2 – 8, 2021). The talented Mr. Jha participated in the MvVO ART debut at Sotheby’s (February 2018), and in both the 2019 and 2020 shows in the Oculus at the Westfield World Trade Center, New York City. He is among the artists with works available for sale on the MvVO ART Artsy gallery. This body of work reflects artists’ deep cross-cultural influences and journeys so far, traversing between eastern transcendental expressionism and modern western experientialism influenced by Picasso, de Kooning, Rauschenberg, Rothko, Pollock, Gaitonde, Hussain and others.

Confluence 1

“Vikash is an extraordinary talent and the perfect choice for the first solo show on our virtual gallery space. His art is inspirational and so is his optimism and dedication to seeking out and seizing opportunities to grow his art career. He has great potential and the heart to find an audience for his work.”

We’re happy to support Vikash with a solo show.” Maria van Vlodrop, Founder CEO of MvVO ART. Vikash recently won a contest hosted by Penguin Random House and was awarded a review by the art
critic and author of, ‘How to Be an Artist’, Jerry Saltz. The noted Pulitzer-prize winning critic said of Vikash’s work: “You know a fair amount about art. Great sense of color…. internal light. Gets viewers engaged from far and….then draws them in… by working back the details. This is important… I think that if this is the least representative of your works, you are in great shape.”

Vikash Jha is a contemporary abstract expressionist. Born in India, Vikash immigrated to the United States to work in the Management Consulting and Financial Services Industries and for specialized academic studies at Harvard and MIT, after his formal Art education in India. His diligence in seeking out connections and opportunities has led to significant recognition for his budding career. Since 2017, his work has been featured in many Chelsea galleries and shows in the New York Metro area including:
Pleiades Gallery, 1stDibs Design Center, Edison Arts Society, and MvVO AD ART SHOW.

Born and raised in India, Vikash Jha was fortunate to have parents that supported him in all his endeavors, imploring him to follow the pursuit of happiness. Their support guided him to carve his own path of deep study during his formative years as he spent his weekends at a specialized art school. It was there that he learned the formal techniques from his teachers, honing his artistic style.

After receiving formal art and business education in India, Jha would later immigrate to the United States and start a career in Management Consulting and Investment Banking. He would also take up specialized academic studies at Harvard and MIT, but his calling in the arts would bring him back to pursue his first love-painting. Through his diligence in making connections and opportunities, his art career would slowly earn well-deserved recognition.

Today, Vikash Jha is one of the leading contemporary artists in the abstract expressionist movement. He is renowned for his use of color, cross-cultural imagery, and multilayered painting techniques. Each of Jha’s works takes his viewers into a place that evokes joy, exuberance, and awe, prompting them into contemplation and meditation. Despite finding his artistic style, he continues to be a keen student of art, continuously learning new things in his practice as he experiments with materials, techniques, and mediums.

Art is more than an ornament—it’s a tool that tells a story, and each piece should be judged by the story it tells and what that story does to people. If art enthusiasts and professionals keep grounded into that criteria, then artist Vikash Jha is definitely on another level and will only continue to push the boundaries of abstract art in the coming years.

Vikash is a notable contemporary artist who thrives in the abstract expressionist genre. He has made a reputation for being a master at using color to invoke emotions that stir up a sense of a Utopia-like solace in his audiences. Jha uses cross-cultural images to create multi-layered pieces that have swelled in popularity and demand over the past few seasons.

“My background gave me the understanding and appreciation of bold expressionist techniques of many western greats as well as transcendental visual expressions interwoven in my personality,” adds Vikash. “All this has helped develop my unique approach to content, individualistic style and painting technique.”

Vikash is bold in his commitment to showcasing the appreciation for the transcendental through the visual medium. Guided by this clear philosophy, he takes the formless and puts meaning and emotion to it. The artist’s work is very textural, almost coming to life as one devotes undivided attention to it somehow. For that, art enthusiasts take to his work as a rather multi-dimensional experience that ignites feelings of bliss at the existential level

“To get the invite from MvVO Art to be in their first solo artist show on Artsy, from among theirworld-wide curated pool of artists, is a huge honor! I look forward to this experience!” – Vikash Jha

This new exhibition brings together a diverse group of artists, who showcase works rooted in nature endlessly re-forming and reshaping itself. Through their uses of contemporary artistic forms, in various scenarios and formats—each with their own conventions — they each infuse life into dead fragments and propose different modes of contemplation: of nature and the boundaries between the visible and invisible; of the firmament that surrounds us as part of that nature; and of life through art. They invite the public to approach their surrounding reality in a poetic-artistic-ecological way.

Black & White Gallery / Project Space is located at 55 Island Creek Road, Southampton, NY 11968. Exhibition hours: Open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, noon-5pm, but must be scheduled in advance and Monday-Friday by appointment only. If you are interested in checking out the exhibition, visitors must schedule the appointment by clicking on “Schedule Gallery Visit” button located on the home page of the gallery website www.blackandwhiteartgallery.com. From the start, the Gallery has been committed to cultivating promising artists in the initial and more advanced phases of their careers exploring contemporary themes and concepts through multiple mediums. In 2010 the Chelsea location was closed, and not-for-profit Black & White Project Space was established. Hope For Depression Research Foundation Founder, Audrey Gruss, Hosted Kickoff Luncheon for ‘Race of Hope’

0

(Southampton, NY – July 27, 2021) – On Friday, July 23rd, Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) Founder Audrey Gruss hosted a kickoff picnic luncheon for the sixth annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression, a 5K run/walk in August that raises awareness and funds for brain research.

Held at the Hamptons home of Audrey and her husband Martin Gruss, the party was attended by an intimate group of Race of Hope committee members and guests including Janna Bullock, Arthur Dunnam and Roy Cohen, Barbara and Alan Glatt, Jamee and Peter Gregory, Candace Hamm, Kim Heirston, Natasha Jeffries, Anne Nordeman, Hilary Geary Ross, Scott Snyder, Victoria Wyman, Clelia & Tom Zacharias and Richard Ziegelasch.

Guests were seated at tables decorated with bright sunflowers in a shady glade by a large reflecting pool.  Papa G Dixieland Band played live music by the pool house, where a delicious buffet was arranged.  The menu included grilled sliced chicken breast, grilled shrimp, sliced sirloin steak, poached salmon, Buffalo mozzarella and Heirloom tomatoes, tricolor salad, farro salad, grilled summer vegetables, and arugula with grilled peaches. Dessert included a watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew medley, blueberry pie, chocolate chip cookies and a special Race of Hope Meyer Lemon pound cake with bright frosting in HDRF’s signature yellow.

As everyone started the first course, Gruss thanked her guests for their support of the race. The beloved annual tradition returns in-person to Southampton after going virtual in 2020 due to the pandemic. This year iconic journalist Katie Couric will attend as celebrity Grand Marshal to cheer on all participants.

“We’re thrilled to be able to gather in person again for this special day, especially with Katie Couric, whose warm smile is known across the world,” said Gruss.  “Humans are wired to need warm social interaction.  The isolation of the pandemic has taken a large toll on the nation’s mental health.”

All race participants will receive a lightweight running vest, short sleeve shirt, race hat and huge finisher medal.   One hundred percent of proceeds from the race will fund groundbreaking research into the root causes of depression in the brain and new and better treatments.  To sign up or learn more, please visit https://www.raceofhopeseries.com/

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

•                   HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.

•                   Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.

•                   The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.

•                   In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of nine leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.

•                   HDRF has invested over $35 million in advanced depression research to date.

About Depression:

•                   In the United States, depression affects over 20-million adults each year – that is one in 10 adults.

•                   Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 11 minutes – over 47,000 people per year.

•                   Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

•                   Depression costs society $210 billion annually – 60% of which represents reduced efficiency at work and costs related to suicide.

The Crisis in Research and Treatment

•                   50% of those diagnosed with depression do not fully respond to existing treatments.

•                   In 35 years since the introduction of Prozac and other SSRI anti-depressants, there has been almost no change in the treatment of depression.

•                   Although depression is one of the most serious and prevalent conditions in the US, it is ranked 77th (out of 250) in the amount of federal funding it receives.

•                   Most of the major pharmaceutical companies have discontinued brain research.

What Makes HDRF Different

•                   The Depression Task Force represents the most innovative approach to neuroscience research today.

•                   The Task Force has created an unprecedented research plan with each member executing a piece of the plan in their own laboratories.  By avoiding well-worn paths of research, the team is shaking up the field for answers that will finally lead to new treatments for depression.

•                   They share results in real-time at a centralized data bank. This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research. This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.

Black & White Gallery Presents En Plein Air Reloaded: Green Fuse 07/23 – 08/29

Southampton, NY – July, 2021 – Black & White Gallery / Project Space is delighted to present the group exhibition En Plein Air Reloaded: Green Fuse. The show, which will be on view from July 23rd – August 29th will feature the works of artists including Cristina del Campo, Isadora Capraro, Megan Foster, Jack Henry, Michael Krondl, and the late Shimon Okshteyn.

The in-person opening reception will be held on Friday, July 23rd from 6 to 9pm on the lawn of the gallery new space in Southampton, NY.

The show brings together artists with unique perspectives and diverse backgrounds, who propose new experiences rooted in nature endlessly re-forming and reshaping itself.

The show will feature over 30 works with highlights including Birds of a Feather Flock Together by Shimon Okshteyn from 2019; Purple Bear by Megan Foster from 2017; Wilderness 2 by Jack Henry from 2020; Environment #3 by Cristina del Campo from 2012; Beach Grass Drawing by Michael Krondl from 2021; and Red Landscape by Isadora Capraro from 2020.

About Black & White Gallery / Project Space:

Black & White Gallery/ Project Space was founded in New York in 2002. From the start, the Gallery has been committed to cultivating promising artists in the initial and more advanced phases of their careers exploring contemporary themes and concepts through multiple mediums. The Gallery’s original location was a unique industrial indoor/outdoor ground floor space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – the breeding ground of emerging talent at that time. From 2006 to 2010 Black & White Gallery operated from two locations – Williamsburg and Chelsea. In 2010 the Chelsea location was closed, and not-for-profit Black & White Project Space was established. From 2010 to 2012 both the Gallery and Project Space operated side by side presenting simultaneous exhibition programs out of the Gallery’s original indoor/outdoor location in Williamsburg.

From 2015 to 2018 Black & White Gallery / Project Space operated from its new brick-and-mortar space in Bushwick, Brooklyn – the new creative hub of New York City.  Going forward, the Gallery continues to experiment with different exhibition modules both in digital and physical spaces with their new location in Southampton.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Cristina del Campo (b. 1981, based in Basel, Switzerland)
Cristina del Campo focuses on conceptsof fragment and reconceptualization, playing with natural and manmade, abstraction and figurationShe blends fragments of architectural structures and plants taken out of their natural contexts and creates a new fictitious reality with those fragments contextualized in a new, more abstracted way.

The objects and structures Del Campo selects are fragments of our environment that often go unnoticed. They interest her for various visual and conceptual reasons. She sees them as isolated, out of context overlapping characters in this fictional reality that fuses artificial and natural.

Cristina Del Campo earned her BFA degree at the University of Salamanca, Spain (2004) and her MFA degree at the University Complutense of Madrid, Spain (2007). She is the recipient of several prestigious awards in her native Spain, such as Visual Arts Government of Cantabria Award (twice), Gaceta Foundation Award, Ibercaja Award, Pancho Cossío Award or Government of Cantabria Visual Arts Grant.

Isadora Capraro (b.1994, based in Southampton, NY)

In her abstracted landscapes Isadora Capraro constructs a universe in which the human figure tenderly merges with the subtle world of nature. In this space time slows down and offers the state of peace and stillness.

Isadora Capraro was born in Italy and immigrated to Buenos Aires shortly after. After attending the Manuel Belgrano National School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires she moved to the United States apprenticing for artists to achieve complete and practical art education. She worked for artists of note in Los Angeles, New York, Sagaponack, and Buenos Aires, while developing her own art practice.

Isadora had her first solo show in 2018 and after that, she participated in several group shows in the United States. Her work is in private collections in Buenos Aires, New York City, Southampton and Mexico City.

Megan Foster (b. 1977, based in Brooklyn, NY)

With irony and humor, Megan Foster portrays often-overinflated expectations of the way we live and how we try to better ourselves from previous generations. Her work suggests a narrative by presenting a frozen moment in time, aiming to preserve and give authority to the everyday experience. Utilizing appropriated images from art, architecture, technology and popular science as starting point, she depicts sometimes banal scenes that have the potential to be spectacular and fantastic.

Foster frequently uses nature as a backdrop. Toys, hybrid plants, designer pets and naturally occurring spectacles find their way into the work as she rethinks the meaning of contemporary landscape and the technological sublime.

Nite Bright is a series of paintings made during the height of the pandemic while under strict quarantine regulations. Influenced by liminal time and space, the series explores real and artificial reality. Platforms such Zoom, Zwift and Apple’s operating system are used to explore altered rituals and the everyday experience.

Sifter (gold) and Sifter (mixed) are inspired by MIT’s robotic fish SoFi, created to explore the world’s most fragile coral reefs, and holographic lure tapes used for designer fishing tackle. The series began after several visits to Venice FL, the self-proclaimed “shark tooth capital of the world.” The 2D hybrid collections of holographic shark’s teeth were created after observing the obsessive, as well as the casual, collector of shark’s teeth along these beaches.

Megan Foster earned her BFA at RISD (2000) and MFA at Columbia University (2002). Before joining the faculty at RISD in the fall of 2016, Foster taught at The City College of New York where she was the head of Printmaking and director of the MFA program. She was also master printer at the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies and is the co-founder of Moonlight Editions. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Black and White Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Mixed Greens Gallery, NYC; PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, NY; Inside-Out Art Museum, Beijing, China; and the San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA, among other venues.

Jack Henry (b. 1984, based in Brooklyn, NY)

Jack Henry’s practice explores the compromised state of the environment by focusing on the spaces of untamed growth remaining in the urban landscape – where mankind’s conquest of wilderness is most evident.  He portrays environmental degradation by combining found objects with plants emblematic of the city. In his Brooklyn neighborhood, wild growth is confined to empty lots and gutter spaces where he collects material from to make sculpture, installations and works on paper reflecting the compromised state of the modern landscape.

For the wall reliefs, Henry embeds sticks, chains, rocks and cigarette packets within cement to become their compositional elements. Leaves, rebar, cans and cables are cast out of resin and bronze to be assembled into sculptures. Found paper and cardboard is collaged together to create the ground for landscape drawings. Cubes of recycled steel are stacked and sprayed with Hydroseed public work.

In the current series of sculptures Henry casts frail plants and objects out of resin. The likeness of each impermanent leaf is forever preserved by the toxic material complicit in the destruction of the natural world. The resin objects are combined into assemblages and relief sculptures referencing the collections of flora and detritus that amass in empty lots. He is interested in depicting the contradictions we face as an ecologically aware society functioning within a consumerist system. The mediums he selects are chosen for their ability to highlight the contradictions we face today.

Jack Henry earned his BFA in Sculpture at the Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL (2007) and MFA in Sculpture at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD (2010).  He is the recipient of several fellowships and residencies, most notably at Mass Moca Residency (2020), Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada, Earthed – Ecology Themed Artists Residency Fellowship (2019), Arte_Fits.foundation, Dorado, Puerto Rico. Art in Nature Fellowship (2019), and Vermont Studio Center, Stowe, VT. August Fellowship (2017).

Michael Krondl (b.1960, based in Brooklyn, NY)

Michael Krondl’s work seeks to rethink the tropes of photography by replacing the more common process of peering through a lens with a more immediate, physical experience. In his installations, he is interested in a personal, physical–even visceral–reaction from the viewer that bypasses higher intellectual functions and goes directly for the midbrain. The subject of the work is often our troubled relationship to the natural world, as a society and as individuals. The work seeks to create an intersection of the somatic and the conceptual where human frailty isn’t merely theory but a potential and immediate danger.

Beach Grass Drawing is part of series that explores the intersection of photography and drawing. Here the wind generates an infinite series of ever-changing vertical strokes, a selection of which is captured here. Although this body work is only possible with digital technology, it is indebted to early twentieth century surrealist and Dadaist ideas of automatic drawing where the artist’s agency was limited by happenstance. Each image was shot approximately 1/4 second apart.

Michael Krondl earned his BFA at Cooper Union (1984). He has been the recipient of several prestigious awards and residencies such as the Canada Council Travel Grant (1991-98), Artslink (2003), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, NY (2010), and Baer Arts Center, Iceland (2018)). His work has been shown in galleries and museums in Canada, Czech Republic, Germany and the USA.

Shimon Okshteyn (1951-2020)
Born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, Shimon Okshteyn was a graduate of the Mitrofan Grekov Art College in Odessa, Ukraine. He lived and worked in the USA since 1980.

Since the early days in his new country, Okshteyn was a keen and sensitive observer of the external environment voraciously absorbing it. He did not hold on to the past, but took the best from it making use of art historical references, playfully reinvigorating elements from the Renaissance, Baroque and social realism, as well as German expressionism, linking these to the present in a highly astute and distinctive idiom. He expressed his new reality in his work balancing between the high and the low, public and private with a characteristic style that shifted between abstraction and figurative. He was the barometer of time who defined where the artistic interest of the epoch was moving.

The use of materials in his work was calculated. There may not always be similarities between the different bodies of work. Each one often consisted of works in diverse mediums grouped around specific themes offering a colorful first impression, but on closer inspection revealing multiple layers of meaning and intricate narratives. His practice came from the concept of difference and appropriation. It explored the varying relationships between popular culture and fine art. In the current climate where many believe history has no relevance, he found himself continually returning to those aspects that still strongly resonate with us today by meticulously preserving disappearing objects for posterity or reproducing excerpts of iconic works of art and inserting them into contemporary context.

His last body of work was greatly influenced by his life in the Hamptons surrounded by nature.

It marked the artist’s return from the world of manmade to the realm of the organic, the perishable and the swiftly passing.
