Bianca Nemelc: AUSTRAL SUMMER April 16th – May 7th, 2022

0

NEW YORK CITY – Hashimoto Contemporary is excited to
announce the inaugural exhibition at our new Lower East Side
location in New York City. The space will debut with a solo
exhibition by Bronx-based artist Bianca Nemelc, titled Austral
Summer.

Women of Moses, 2022

Inspired by summertime in the Southern Hemisphere, which
takes place from November to February, the artist looked
specically to the Antarctic, drawing upon natural occurrences such as Blood Falls, moss forests and striped glaciers. These elements are found throughout the work, merging seamlessly with brown bodies which fluidly become a part of the natural topography. Rounded breasts and stomachs swell and form land masses, creating sweeping and powerful scenic vistas. Austral Summer features a series of ten new paintings which blur the lines between the gurative, the landscape, and the abstract, serving as a meditative exploration of our own connection to space and nature.

Ice Portal, 2022

About the new body of work, the artist states,”I’m currently really interested in bridging a connection between brown bodies and a continent that is devoid of governance, and seemingly neutral in the global history of colonialism. How can we see ourselves in this uninhabitable space? How do we nd connection and belonging in places we don’t feel we belong and how do we advocate for these same spaces, because our existence is dependent on it?”

Snowmelt and Blood, 2022-

Please join us Saturday, April 16th at 54 Ludlow Street from 4pm to 8pm for the opening of Austral Summer. The artist will be in attendance.

CLYDE HOPKINS-Chaunticlere: Paintings from the 1980s on view April 22 – June 11, 2022

0

NEW YORK, NY – Upsilon Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of seminal paintings by the late British artist Clyde Hopkins (1946-2018) titled Chaunticlere: Paintings from the 1980s, on view from April 22 to June 11, 2022. Presented in cooperation with the artist’s estate, this group of works places enormous value on emotional spontaneity, instinctive creation and scale in response to political and social issues in the wake of Thatcherism. This exhibition marks the first showing of Hopkins’ artworks with Upsilon Gallery in New York. An opening reception will be held at 23 East 67th Street on Thursday, April 21, from 6:00–8:00 PM.

Stylistically linked to many of the most important art movements of his time, Hopkins’ legacy is his large and diverse body of work, expressing both abstraction and early referents to representation in imaginative, surprising and lyrical ways.

The First Kipper Belch, 1986

Throughout his life and career, Hopkins drew his inspiration from one of his greatest passions: nature. In the paintings selected for this exhibition, Hopkins demonstrated visceral attitudes toward the then political and social climate in the UK. Even though abstraction was apparent, landscape and the natural world were still important and acted as a starting point, as is evident in the pictures, Reluctance: State Peach (1984), The Diary and the Coast (1985), and Diving for Pearls (1986). The covert reference in the titles to a moment of political confrontation was manifest in the turbulent nature of the paintings.

Phallocentric Painting (For -MB) 1985

Hopkins combined Abstract Expressionism’s active gestures and freedoms with the intuitive approach to composition he had been developing. He worked instinctively, yet methodically—these works represent the evolution of his skill as a painter. It speaks to his ability to create volume in space, his mastery of color and his ability to harness the stark emotive power suggesting an attempt to access a kind of thought-before-words, uncorrupted by the socialized realm of language.

About this selection of paintings, Metropolitan Museum of Art curator John Guy notes, “[They] represent Hopkins’ intensely personal psychological journeying, that is at once dangerous and inviting. Whilst venturing far from shore, Hopkins always extended a lifeline to his viewer, a glimpse of something that just might be a remembering of something figurative, a powerful idea, or a quirky title that evoked its own sense of place, or, of a moment experienced, made unexpectedly familiar.” Guy goes on, “[They] have another quality not immediately apparent at first glance: they are deeply pleasurable. Colours have a remarkable intensity, a dark ominous blue or impasto black verging on the foreboding, creating a tension that is then relieved on occasion by grid structures or by arabesques that cartwheel across the composition. Light blues and whites are given the luminous effervescence of reactive minerals, radiating off the dark dense canvas. Others have a lighter mood, curlicues that evoke a memory of Matisse’s balcony, with the atmosphere of a balmy Mediterranean summer night. In Hopkins abstractions, you always stay connected, no matter how tenuously, with the material world.”

About Clyde Hopkins

Clyde Hopkins was born in East Sussex in 1946 and moved with his family to Cumbria when he was 11, before studying fine art at Reading in the 1960s where he met his future wife, Marilyn. He exhibited work for over 40 years, produced in studios in Greenwich, Deptford and St. Leonards-on-Sea. During his life, Clyde was awarded the Mark Rothko Memorial Fellowship (USA) in 1990-91 and the 1999 Lorne Award. Widely admired as a generous teacher and mentor, he was a visiting artist in many art schools during the 1970s until becoming Head of Painting, then of Fine Art, at Winchester School of Art in 1982. From 1990 to 2006 he was Head of Painting at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, and retired as emeritus professor at the University of the Arts London. After his death in 2018, some of his works were acquired by the Tate.

The Diary and the Coast, 1985

Solo exhibitions included the Serpentine Gallery London (1978 and 1986), the Acme Gallery London (1979), the Ikon Birmingham and Rochdale Art Gallery (both 1985), Salisbury Art Centre (1988), Modern Times at the Castlefield Gallery Manchester (1989), Kunstverein Kirchzarten Germany (Kunst Europa 1991), Reg Vardy Arts Foundation Sunderland (1994), Atkinson Gallery Millfield School (1996), Vodka, a Stiff Breeze and Paranoia at the London Institute Gallery (1998), the Francis Graham Dixon Gallery London (1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1997) and Galeria Joan Prats New York (1990 and 1994). In 2012, he had two solo exhibitions—Brown Madder at Chelsea Futurespace, London, and Indian Yellow at the Merston Gallery, Chichester.

Upsilon Gallery Opens New Flagship Location on The Upper East Side

Upsilon Gallery, a leading art gallery and fine print publisher specializing in International postwar and contemporary art, recently opened their new flagship location on the Upper East Side at 23 East 67th Street with its inaugural exhibition “Kaleidoscope” by artist Osvaldo Mariscotti.

Founded by Director Marcelo Zimmler in 2014, Upsilon Gallery has office locations in New York, Miami and London by appointment only, and has been regularly holding highly successful physical and online exhibitions throughout the years. At Upsilon, Zimmler and his team have an unwavering commitment to rediscovering a roster of accomplished artists that have been forgotten or overlooked within a historical scope.  Ever evolving, the gallery continues to embrace new technological advancements key to the goal of encouraging new forms of interpretation for the novice and seasoned collector, inviting them not only to learn about art, but to experience it through a new and dynamic lens.

For their first brick and mortar location, Zimmler chose the Upper East Side, recognizing that the neighborhood is a true cornerstone for the art and design community. He wanted to create a contemporary space, providing a neutral stark white setting for the artwork on display and an approachable and friendly atmosphere for collectors and guests.

“Our vision for this new flagship gallery in the Upper East Side is to create an outstanding and unique home for our artists and our team, and a vibrant cultural destination in the heart of NYC,” said Marcelo Zimmler.

In their first exhibition, Upsilon Gallery will present a comprehensive look at the oeuvre of mid-career Italian-American artist Osvaldo Mariscotti from February 25th – April 16th. The show will focus on the artist’s study of the symbol, both individually and as a group in the development of language. Select works to be showcased will include: Origins from 2020, oil on canvas (3 panels); Firenze from 2021, oil and enamel on canvas; Spar from 2021, bronze; Infinity from 2014, oil and enamel on wood; and Melody from 2016-2018, oil on canvas.

Mariscotti’s dedication to the interaction of form and color has led to a continued exploration of perception. He takes over the most basic elements of Suprematist art, the straight line and the square, a choice that reflects the emphasis he places on the shapes produced by man rather than those existing in nature. His works are very significant, made from the decomposition of figures such as the rectangle, which is then decomposed into its essential-colored lines on a black background. Mariscotti’s search puts him in the context of geometric conceptualism: that reality of thought that holds figuration as malaise and searches for synthesis, as a model to pursue. His art examines the “nonreality” and breaks it down into geometric shapes, to arrive at the development of a new code. He has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in prestigious institutions around the world such as the MIIT Museum, Turin; the Malzfabrik, Berlin; the Chianciano Museum of Art, Chianciano Terme; the Galata Museum, Genoa; the Officina delle Zattere, Venice; the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona; Canova Museum, Possagno; and the Museum of Contemporary Art Giuseppe Sciortino, Monreale. In 2015, Mariscotti first participated in the 56th Venice Biennale with his now iconic Book of Color I.

Upsilon Gallery will boast a robust spring season featuring exhibitions by artists including Clyde Hopkins, Diet Sayler and Williard Boepple.

Upsilon Gallery is located at 23 East 67th Street, New York NY 10065. Exhibition hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm. If you are interested in checking out the exhibition, visitors are encouraged to call 646-476-4190 or email info@upsilongallery.com to schedule an exclusive tour. Visit www.upsilongallery.com  for further details.

  1. As you’ve explored the symbol of Kaleidoscope, what has been found, in a few sentences.
Kaleidoscope has to do with the ideas of beauty, pattern, and repetition, and we feel that those 3 elements summarize the show quite succinctly. Mariscotti makes use of symbols, both individually and collectively to explore one of the most overarching themes in his career, the passage of time. Time is represented by the artist with specific layouts of shape and color, which convey an idea of motion
alluding to the natural state of time which exists in a continuum. Mariscotti interprets time by devising specific schemes of color and form, which convey the idea of motion alluding to the natural state of time which exists within a continuum.
  2. Tell me about how one or a few works reflect on Kaleidescope.
Kaleidoscope refers to pattern and repetition, and the artist uses those two means to represent the passage of time. Examples of this representation are: Origins, 2020; Firenze, 2021; and Melody, 2017.
Origins includes one of Mariscotti’s most iconic patterns, three vertical bars of color joined through a horizontal connector to a larger block on the right. Here, the three bars on the left represent an initial
state, which over time is affected by certain conditions to arrive at a conclusion or resulting state.
Firenze on the other hand, displays a grid which breaks down a scene into constituted frames, allowing the viewer to traverse the canvas from one frame to the next in a dynamic, if not, narrative, or cinematic fashion. Finally, Melody displays horizontal rows of repeated shapes which create a sequence making reference to the idea of code and language.
  3. Does your gallery have a specific goal?
Yes, our goal is to present accomplished artists who have been overlooked and give them a second chance to notoriety on a new stage in the heart of NYC. Our mission is to rediscover late-career artists
and artist estates whose works are part of a life-long journey of creation, have exhibited extensively in the past, yet been overlooked by recent art history, deserving another look within the canon. We also maintain an ongoing secondary market print program offering works by established artists, as well as publishing original editions by Osvaldo Mariscotti.
  4. Why has the artist in this exhibit been overlooked?
There are many reasons why artists can become overlooked by the art establishment. Some of it has to do with their personal efforts, maturity, initiatives, expectations, timing, luck, public taste, and critic
reception. For any given time within an artist’s career there is seldom one reason, but a combination of a few. Aesthetics aside, we believe Mariscotti has hit a stride in his creative practice where he is
successfully addressing collective formal and conceptual concerns in a meaningful and communicative way, both for the viewer and himself.
  5. One of the images is titled, “Infinity.” What is the relationship between Infinity and Kaleidescope?
Infinity is that which is boundless, endless, or larger than any number, and is often denoted by the infinity symbol. Much of Mariscotti’s work is conceived in 3-dimensional space, and as such evokes a sense of boundlessness which is also inherent in the concept of the kaleidoscope, defined in part by endless repetition.
  6. Why did you decide to move to a brick-and-mortar location?
For our first brick and mortar location, I chose the Upper East Side, recognizing that the neighborhood is a true cornerstone for the art and design community. I wanted to create a contemporary space,
providing a neutral stark white setting for the artwork on display and an approachable and friendly atmosphere for collectors and guests. Our vision for this new flagship gallery is to create an outstanding
and unique home for our artists and our team, and a vibrant cultural destination in the heart of NYC.

Hope For Depression Research Foundation’s Race of Hope Returns This Saturday, February 26th

0

Palm Beach, Florida –February 21, 2022) – The Race of Hope is back!  On February 26, 2022,  Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) will hold its annual 5K Race of Hope to Defeat Depression in Palm Beach.  The event attracts hundreds of runners and walkers throughout South Florida to raise crucial funds for mental health research.

Last year, the Race was forced to go virtual due to covid restrictions.  This year the event will be a careful return to in-person racing with measures such as staggered heats to keep runners safely distanced.  Over 500 participants are expected to attend.

“We’re thrilled to be able to gather in person again for this very special day,” said HDRF Founder and Chair  Audrey Gruss.  “Humans are wired to need warm social interaction.  The isolation of the pandemic has taken a large toll on the nation’s mental health.”

Gruss pointed to surveys that show over one third of Americans struggle with symptoms of depression and anxiety.  HDRF’s leadership in the field of depression research is more urgent than ever, she said.  One hundred percent of proceeds from the Race will fund groundbreaking research into the root causes of clinical depression in the brain and new and better treatments.

Gruss and HDRF Board member Scott Snyder, both Palm Beach residents, will serve as Co-Grand Marshals for the race. They will lead participants on a beautiful 5K (3.1 mile) route starting at The Royal Poinciana Plaza and continuing along the beautiful North Lake Trail and through the streets of Palm Beach. The Race is a high-spirited, family friendly event that is open to all ages and speeds, with dogs and strollers welcomed.

The Palm Beach Race of Hope has grown quickly over the years, with over 700 participants in 2020, before the pandemic.  The race was first launched in Southampton in August 2016 and expanded to Palm Beach in February 2019. The event has raised over $1 million for research since its launch.

During the pandemic both races went virtual, an adaptation that allowed thousands of runners from all over the nation to participate from their own hometowns, regardless of geography.  While the Palm Beach Race returns to in-person this year, HDRF will still provide a virtual race for its national audience.  The Foundation will host its first annual National Virtual Race of Hope in May in honor of Mental Health Awareness month. 100% of the funds raised will go directly to advanced depression research. What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

•                   HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.

•                   Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.

•                   The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.

•                   In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of nine leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.

•                   HDRF has invested over $40 million in advanced depression research to date.

About Depression:

•                   In the United States, depression affects over 20-million adults each year – that is one in 10 adults.

•                   Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 11 minutes – over 47,000 people per year.

•                   Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

•                   Depression costs society $210 billion annually – 60% of which represents reduced efficiency at work and costs related to suicide.

The Crisis in Research and Treatment

•                   50% of those diagnosed with depression do not fully respond to existing treatments.

•                   In 35 years since the introduction of Prozac and other SSRI anti-depressants, there has been almost no change in the treatment of depression.

•                   Although depression is one of the most serious and prevalent conditions in the US, it is ranked 77th (out of 250) in the amount of federal funding it receives.

•                   Most of the major pharmaceutical companies have discontinued brain research.

What Makes HDRF Different

•                   The Depression Task Force represents the most innovative approach to neuroscience research today.

•                   The Task Force has created an unprecedented research plan with each member executing a piece of the plan in their own laboratories.  By avoiding well-worn paths of research, the team is shaking up the field for answers that will finally lead to new treatments for depression.

•                   They share results in real-time at a centralized data bank. This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research. This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.

LUSH at Hashimoto Contemporary

0

NEW YORK CITY – Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to
present Lush, a group show curated by Jennifer Rizzo. The
exhibition brings together a group of over thirty artists from
around the globe who have drawn inspiration from one of the
most prominent muses of all times – the flowering species.

Genevieve Cohn, The Peal Oracle, 2022
HelloMarine, Bienvenue Chez Moi, 2022

Throughout history, florals can ben found represented in art from all cultures and regions, as well as a source of inspiration within various artistic movements. With over 400,000 known plant species, artists have long looked to this endless array of specimens, utilizing them to convey universal symbol of beauty as well as a spectrum of human emotion. By doing so, artists are able to imbue the delicately stemmed floral with great emotional heft.

Melody Tuttle, Microdose in Mccarren, 2022
Nicholas Zirk, Keep Cool, 2021

Lush spotlights contemporary artists once again looking to the timeless floral muse, from Genevieve Cohn’s jewel-toned figures interacting with nature, to Gabe Langholtz’s works which tell an unfinished story, Anna Valdez’s maximalist still lifes, and Lindsey Lou Howard’s larger than life sculptural homage to plant-based fast food, the exhibition surveys a modern approach to a classic subject.

The gallery will be open by appointment only. In order to ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff, please note that masks are legally required for entry. To schedule an appointment, please click HERE.

For the exhibition, the gallery has teamed up with garden design company Primrose Designs NYC, led by Kris & Elena Nuzzi, who created the botanical installation within the gallery space. About a year ago Hashimoto Contemporary held another exhibit titled Lush. The botanical installation is new to this year’s version – images coming soon!

Chef Gerard Bertholon of Cuisine Solutions Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award from Académie Culinaire de France

(Sterling, VA, February, 2022) – Chef Gerard Bertholon of Cuisine Solutions, Inc(CUSI), the global leader and largest premium food company in pioneering and perfecting the sous vide cooking technique, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award (Fauteuil de l’Academie) by the USA and Canada Chapter of the Académie Culinaire de France on Sunday, February 6, 2022, in New York City. He was honored for his steadfast commitment to educating aspiring chefs about the culinary arts and the sous vide cooking method.

Chef Gerard joined Cuisine Solutions in 1989 as a corporate research and development chef and holds the position of chief strategy officer.  At Cuisine Solutions, Chef Bertholon and his team continue to leverage the method to help companies—from large hotel chains and airlines to national restaurant chains and numerous other industries—save money, reduce waste, and help with the shortage of skilled labor.

“Gerard Bertholon has had a long and successful career helping to champion French gastronomy along with the innovative sous vide manufacturing company Cuisine Solutions,” said Sebastien Baud, President Delegation Académie Culinaire de France US/Canada. He continued, “This year we honor him for his true impact on the culinary world, recognizing his efforts to teach and inspire young chefs to be an integral part of the gastronomic landscape.”

Boasting an impressive culinary career, Bertholon trained with two-and three-starred Michelin chefs Alain Chapel and Louis Outhier, who he credits as his two key mentors. He served as the executive chef in a number of premier French restaurants including La Panetière in Rye, New York, which earned three stars from The New York Times. In 2012, he was named Maitres Cuisiniers de France, one of the culinary world’s highest honors, focusing on the continuity of French culinary traditions. Bertholon was also named Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole, by the French Ministry of Agriculture in 2013.

“I’m very grateful and extremely honored to be the recipient of this award and want to thank our worldwide president Fabrice Prochasson, president Sebastien Baud, our board, and my friends and colleagues of the ACF,” said Gerard Bertholon. “While it’s hard to pinpoint just one person who has influenced my career, I am reminded of my grandmother and mother, who supported me unconditionally and my first real mentors as a young chef Alain Chapel, Louis Outhier and Jacques Chibois.”

The Académie Culinaire de France was founded in 1879 and is made up of 1080 members worldwide. The prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to those whose life’s work is set to have a prominent and lasting impact on the culinary industry.
