Robert Cenedella’s, ‘So Many Roads (Greatful Dead 1965-Forever),’ highlighted in Carlton Fine Arts Ltd opening, “Rock and Roll Art”

2

(New York, NY – July 27, 2022) On Wednesday, July 20th, Chris Concannon filled in for Artist Robert Cenedella (b. 1940) in front of the newly exhibited So Many Roads (Grateful Dead 1965-Forever) at Carlton Fine Arts Ltd. for the opening night of the gallery’s newest exhibition: Rock & Roll Art. Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed light bites and champagne as they admired Cenedella’snewest oil on canvas, a triptych mural sized painting honoring the Grateful Dead’s extensive legacy spanning over six decades.

Also on display were Andy Warhol’s Mick Jagger (1975), Kelly Sullivan’s Rock and Roll Voodoo (2015), and other works by artists highlighting the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones.

Those in attendance that evening included Peter Thomas Roth, Linjie Deng, Cathy Soref, Dusty Wright, Terry Hill, Miranda Lee, Margie Beck, Jean Ziperski, Sara Beth Shrager, Shelby Hannan, & Nicole and Natalie Meir.

Although the Grateful Dead started their storied career as a band in 1965, Artist Robert Cenedella only recently boarded the proverbial ‘bus’ as a Deadhead. In this massive interpretation of the band’s journey across the years, So Many Roads, also known as Grateful Dead 1965-Forever, leaves your eyes scrolling from one panel to the next, all while pondering about the deeper meaning behind all the imagery within the painting. Just like Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow were able to do with their lyrics, Cenedella paints a story that is open to interpretation and resonates with the viewer however they deem fit in this Deadhead’s utopia.

In honor and celebration of Jerry Garcia, on what would have been his 80th birthday, So Many Roads will remain on display to the public until August 1st, 2022. On August 2ndSo Many Roads will exit the Rock & Roll Art exhibition due to prior filming obligations for an upcoming documentary; however, the 26″ x 39″ Fotiou Framed Digital Archival Print will remain in its place at Carlton Fine Arts until August 12th. Exhibition hours are Monday – Thursday: 10 AM – 6 PM; Friday: 10 AM – 4 PM; Saturday: Closed; Sunday: 11 AM – 6 PM. For those interested in seeing the exhibition outside of open hours, appointments can be scheduled by calling (212) 593-2800, or by emailing: info@carltonfa.com. ABOUT ROBERT CENEDELLA

Robert Cenedella was born in Milford, Massachusetts in 1940.  He received his formal education from The High School of Music & Art in New York, and from The Art StudentsLeague of New York.  From 1988-2020, he inherited the George Grosz Chair at The League where he was invited to teach his Life Drawing Class and a Painting Workshop. Following a definitive tradition in art, like Brueghel, Daumier, Hogarth, and Grosz before him, Cenedella has devoted his art to chronicling the changing rituals and myths of contemporary American society.

In the last 40 years, Cenedella has amassed considerable international praise as well as inclusion in numerous public and private collections.  His commissions include works for the famed Bacardi International and Absolut VODKA, a theater piece for actor Tony Randall, two murals of historical significance for Le Cirque 2000 Restaurants in New York and Mexico City, and most recently a visual jam to commemorate the history of the Grateful Dead.

In September 1985, Cenedella exhibited at the Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris, a show sponsored by Mr. Jacques Chirac, then mayor of Paris. In 1988, he held a one-man show at Saatchi & Saatchi’s headquarters in New York, and in 1990, he was included in the prestigious Amnesty International Exhibition in SoHo, New York. In December 1994, he had a major retrospective at the Galerie Am Scheunenviertel in Berlin, Germany, which was a tribute to his former mentor and ran concurrently with the George Grosz Centennial Exhibition at the Berlin National Gallery. That same year, Cenedella’s concept of selling shares of stock in his painting 2001 – A Stock Odyssey was disclosed in a New York Times feature article. The idea prompted Leo Castelli, the SoHo gallery owner, who once compared the art boom of the 1980s to the rise of junk bonds, to call the experiment “a conceptual work of art.” Cenedella was also featured in Norbert Bunge’s award-winning documentary film George Grosz in America: Life’s Fine in the Labyrinth presented at the Berlin Film Festival in 1995.

From 1995 to 2000, Robert Cenedella exhibited and lectured around the United States. From March to May 2003, a full retrospective of the artist’s political works was sponsored by The Nation Institute. This exhibit, The Nation Hangs Cenedella, was held at the New York executive offices of The Nation magazine and covered subjects ranging from the Selma riots to the preemptive war on Iraq. It was the first exhibition given to an American artist by The Nation. On March 11, 2004, Cenedella unveiled “The Easel Painting Revival” at Le Cirque 2000. In the spring of 2005, Robert Cenedella had a solo exhibition at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, and conducted a lecture entitled: “WHAT isn’t ART.”

Cenedella’s art and life was the subject of a book, “The American Artist as Satirist,” by M. Kay Flavell. Cenedella was also the protagonist in Art Bastard, a historical documentary film on his life and work, which was released in the spring of 2016 by Concannon Productions, Inc. to critical acclaim.  It was written and directed by Victor Kanefsky, produced by Chris T. Concannon, and edited by Jim MacDonald.

Robert Cenedella maintained a studio for 60 years in Tribeca and Midtown Manhattan; In August 2020, Cenedella moved from New York City to Maine with his wife, Liz, where he paints full-time. During the summer, Cenedella spends his time on his private island in Maine in a rustic cabin he personally built many years ago. He uses this time for reflection and inspiration.  He is currently working on a coffee table book that revolves around his art and life story, which is due to be released in 2023, titled Robert Cenedella | 60 Years of American Art.

Rachel Strum – INTERFERENCE -at Hashimoto Contemporary

0

NEW YORK CITY – Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present INTERFERENCE, a solo exhibition by Dallas-based artist Rachel Strum. The exhibition will be Strum’s inaugural solo presentation at Hashimoto Contemporary and her debut solo exhibition in New York City.

Rachel Strum – Above the Abyss.03, 2022

INTERFERENCE showcases abstract paintings and sculptures that transcend the limitations of time and space. With the interplay of materiality through oscillating depths of color and substrates, organic and geometric forms commingle within flat and luminous layered and glittering surfaces in this new body of work. The forms mesh and collide simultaneously using a high-key color palette within and outside the confines of the picture plane. This striking juxtaposition creates tension and harmony between the natural and artificial, the familiar and the unknown.

Rachel Strum – Above the Abyss.03, 2022

Beyond dynamic compositions and punchy color combinations, there is also a softness from stretches of velvety-matte surfaces. The works feel boundless; how deep and far back in space do they extend ? Are these cropped snippets from larger expanses? And although informed by more traditional formalist and hard-edge abstraction, the work extends beyond the two-dimensional surface and expands beyond it.

Brightly colored sculptures are displayed alongside the paintings. Using sculpture as a tool to explore space and time, pigmented resin poured in layers forms an object that emanates a glow from light passing through and reflecting. The layering requires the viewer to move around the work to capture the entirety of what is available to perceive.

Rachel Strum – Terraform.01, 2022

The gallery will be releasing a new limited edition print with the artist in conjunction with the exhibition. For details please email info@hashimotocontemporary.com

The exhibition is currently on view through August 13th. For more information, additional images, or exclusive content, please email NYC Director, Jennifer Rizzo at nyc@hashimotocontemporary.com

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rachel Strum is an abstract artist currently based in Dallas, Texas. Working with various mediums ranging from acrylic paint, aerosol paint, and poured resin she builds layered images that consider and explore the constructs of time and space. Luminous color enmeshed by patterning and stratified glittering surfaces oscillates between flat planes of geometric shapes and deep spatial expanses.

Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s ‘Week of Hope’ Returns July 27th – August 6th, 2022

0

New York, NY – July 21, 2022 – Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s Week of Hope will return this year and launch on Wednesday, July 27 at 11 am in Southampton Village, New York outside of AKRIS (52 Jobs Ln., Southampton, NY 11968).

Over 50 local business owners including Douglas Elliman, J. McLaughlin and Michael Kors will display two-foot-wide environmentally safe and reusable bright yellow statement balloons at their front doors, symbolizing hope and their unwavering commitment to raising mental health and depression awareness.

The Week of Hope was created by Southampton resident Audrey Gruss’ Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF,) a leading non-profit dedicated to fighting depression through research and education.  The launch will be hosted by Mrs. Gruss and Southampton Village Mayor Jesse Warren.

“Our Southampton community has always had its finger on the pulse of important issues facing our world,” said Mayor Warren. “Mental health is at the top of our national cultural conversation, and we are proud to partner with Hope for Depression Research Foundation to further awareness.”

The Week of Hope started in 2018 to herald HDRF’s signature summer event, the Race of Hope 5K to Defeat Depression. The campaign was quickly embraced by the shops throughout the Village, but has been on hiatus ever since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.  It now returns to Southampton from July 27 through August 6, with the Race of Hope slated for Sunday, August 7 around Lake Agawam.  Audrey Gruss is a Co-Grand Marshal of the Race with HDRF Board member and East Hampton resident Arthur Dunnam.

Audrey Gruss said: “We are thrilled and gratified to see Southampton Village once again embrace the Week of Hope as we emerge from the pandemic.   Mental health awareness has become more important than ever, and HDRF has a long track record of leadership in this arena.”

Gruss pointed out recent studies showing that two in five American adults report symptoms of anxiety and depression since the pandemic. Studies also show that over forty percent of teenagers struggle with constant sadness and hopelessness, and these staggering statistics seem to only be going up.

On Sunday, August 7th, the last day of the Week of Hope, Audrey Gruss, Arthur Dunnam, and Celebrity Grand Marshal Candace Bushnell will lead the seventh annual Race of Hope around Lake Agawam at 8:30 AM. The race attracts over 500 participants from the tri-state area and beyond to unite as a community and raise mental health awareness and fund depression research. 100% of proceeds from the Race will fund groundbreaking research into the root causes of depression in the brain and new and better treatments. To sign up or learn more, please visit the website at hopefordepression.org.

The Week of Hope, in conjunction with the Race of Hope, has helped to raise over $1 million for advanced depression research.  The Race is supported by localresidents including Janna Bullock, Arthur Dunnam and Roy Cohen, Alan Glatt, Jamee and Peter Gregory, Mai Hallingby Harrison, Kim Heirston, Tania Higgins, Natasha Jeffries, Leonard and Judy Lauder, Sharon and John Loeb, Jr., Anne and Jacques Nordeman, Kathy Prounis, Hilary Geary Ross, Nancy Silverman, and Lis Waterman.

Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in April 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Today, HDRF is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research and public education. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, but despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. The mission of the HDRF is to fund innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and suicide.

To date, HDRF has provided more than $40 million through over 125 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented.

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

•          HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.

•          Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.

•          The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.

•          In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of nine leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.

•          HDRF has invested over $40 million in advanced depression research to date.

About Depression

•          In the United States, depression affects over 20-million adults each year – that is one in 10 adults.

•          Depression is the leading cause of suicide. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 11 minutes – over 47,000 people per year.

•          Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

•          Depression costs society $210 billion annually – 60% of which represents reduced efficiency at work and costs related to suicide.

The Crisis in Research and Treatment

•          Over 30% of those diagnosed with depression do not respond to existing treatments.

•          In 35 years since the introduction of Prozac and other SSRI anti-depressants, there has been almost no change in the treatment of depression, just tinkering with existing approaches.

•          Although depression is one of the most serious and prevalent conditions in the US, it is ranked 77th (out of 250) in the amount of federal funding it receives.

•          Most of the major pharmaceutical companies have discontinued brain research.

What Makes HDRF Different

•          The Depression Task Force represents the most innovative approach to neuroscience research today.

•          The Task Force has created an unprecedented research plan with each member executing a piece of the plan in their own laboratories.  By avoiding well-worn paths of research, the team is shaking up the field for answers that will finally lead to new treatments for depression.

•          They share results in real-time at a centralized data bank. This allows them to leverage data to accelerate research. This is unheard of in the entire scientific research field which is normally competitive and not collaborative.

(Southampton, NY –July 20, 2022) – On Friday, July 15th, Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) Founder & Chair Audrey Gruss hosted a panel discussion on mental health, followed by a festive luncheon, at the Southampton Arts Center to kick off the seventh annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression, a 5K run/walk in August that raises funds for depression research.

Over 80 people attended the panel discussion, which HDRF conceived in partnership with Southampton Arts Center (SAC) Board member Simone Levinson.   Conducted from 11 am to 12 pm in the SAC theatre, the discussion focused on The Four Pillars of Mental Health: Sleep, Diet, Exercise and Meditation.  Panelists were Bob Roth, CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, Eddie Stern, yoga instructor and author, Jamie Pabst, founder and CEO of Spiritune and Ivey Leidy, nutrition expert and coach.  The moderator was HDRF Executive Director Louisa Benton.

In her welcome remarks, Audrey Gruss said: “This discussion on evidence-based methods to reduce stress and increase resilience to anxiety is more important than ever.  Mental illness and mental wellness are the reverse side of the same coin.”

The luncheon followed the panel discussion, and was exclusively for the committee members of the Race of Hope.  Over 60 committee members attended including James R. Borynack and Adolfo Zaralegui, Janna Bullock, Arthur Dunnam and Roy Cohen, Mark Gilbertson, Alan Glatt, Jamee and Peter Gregory, Martin Gruss, Mai Hallingby Harrison, Kim Heirston, Natasha Jeffries, Sharon Loeb, Anne Nordeman, Kathy Prounis, Nancy Silverman, and Lis Waterman.

Luncheon Guests were seated at tables adorned with bright yellow sunflowers in the SAC Sculpture Garden, where they enjoyed a delicious buffet of grilled chicken kebabs, poached salmon, grilled vegetables, gourmet cheeses, farro salad, garden salad, red potato and string beans and fresh fruit kebabs.

Throughout the luncheon, models stolled among the tables donning the Fall 2022 collection from Akris, a sponsor of the Race of Hope.  After the luncheon, guest walked to the Akris boutique nearby on Jobs Lane for champagne and dessert bites. They also picked up gift bags that featured a summery Akris scarf as well as skin products from Tammy Fender, another Race sponsor.

This year HDRF’s Week of Hope will also make its grand return, concluding with the seventh annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression on Sunday, August 7.  The Week of Hope is a village-wide initiative to raise mental health awareness, when hundreds of stores in downtown Southampton place a large yellow, environmentally friendly balloon just outside their door.  The balloons represent commitment to mental health awareness, and the stores are given an information card from HDRF to hand out with educational information about recognizing the signs of depression.

Race of Hope, a high-spirited, family-friendly 5K run/walk event will take place at 8.30 AM around Lake Agawam in Southampton.  All participants will receive HDRF’s signature yellow Race gear and finisher medal, and prizes will be awarded for the best time in different age categories, as well as for the top individual fundraiser and top fundraising team. Audrey Gruss and Arthur Dunnam, who is an HDRF Advisory Board member and resides in East Hampton, will serve as Race Co-Grand Marshals.

100% of proceeds from the Race will fund groundbreaking research into the root causes of depression in the brain and new and better treatments. To learn more and register for the race, visit https://www.raceofhopeseries.com/.

Renowned Artist Robert Cenedella Presents So Many Roads for Deadheads Across The Globe

4

New York, NY – Summer 2022 – Artist Robert Cenedella (b. 1940) will present his newest painting, So Many Roads (2021), honoring the legacy of the Grateful Dead, the eclectic band that reimagined the way we listen to music by transforming numerous genres, like folk, bluegrass, jazz, country, and blues, into rock and roll.  Over the course of 21 months from July 2019 – March 2021, Cenedella completed what he believes to be one of his best works on canvas: A visual jam for one of the greatest bands of all time.

Also known as Grateful Dead 1965-Forever, this historic, mural sized painting is meant to be enjoyed by all Deadheads. Whether they are seasoned veterans who knew what it was like to be at a show over the past six decades, or newcomers who have just recently gotten onto the proverbial ‘bus,’ their interpretation of this painting will be unique in scope, but similar in awe.

Listening to the Dead’s vast catalog can trigger timeless memories, but when you pair their music with Cenedella’s painting, you begin to relive the experience of all those unforgettable shows, and it leaves you wishing you were still there at that place and time as if the music had never stopped.

The beauty of So Many Roads is that Cenedella managed to concoct a Deadhead’s utopia on canvas that leaves your eyes scrolling from one panel to the next, all while pondering about the deeper meaning behind all the imagery within the painting. Similarly, Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow effectuated the same sentiment through their lyrics. This painting, like their songs, tells a story that is open to interpretation and resonates with the individual however they deem fit.

Cenedella is proud of this historic tribute painting and his hope is that So Many Roads brings the beholder the same kind of adulation and enjoyment the Grateful Dead has passed along to all Deadheads over the last 57+ years and counting. This triptych masterpiece is dedicated to the Grateful Dead, their family and friends, and all who made everyone’s long strange trip possible since 1965.

A portion of the proceeds of all Digital Archival Prints and Posters will benefit HeadCount, a non-partisan organization that uses the power of music to register voters and promote participation in democracy.

In the last 35 years, Cenedella has amassed considerable international praise as well as inclusion in numerous public and private collections.
