About Hope for Depression Research Foundation

Audrey Gruss founded HDRF in 2006 in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Today, HDRF is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on advanced depression research into new and better treatments for the illness. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, and yet conventional medications today are outdated and do not fully work for 50% of patients. The mission of the HDRF is to spur innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and suicide. To date, HDRF has provided more than $45 million through over 200 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented.  Currently, HDRF has a potential new class of medication in pilot clinical trials at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Columbia University.

Galerie Gmurzynska at the Palm Beach Show

1

Galerie Gmurzynska returns to the Palm Beach Show as the only international classic 20th century gallery, bringing international masters who pioneered the abstraction of the human figure. Among these greats count Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brancusi, Francis Picabia, Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, Joaquin Torres- García, and the burgeoning Pop icon, Marjorie Strider. Alongside these masters and in the exclusive charitable benefit of Focused on Nature, Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s fine art undersea photography will be presented.

As a seminal highlight of this presentation, Picasso’s plaster sculpture of his left hand from 1937 will be shown in its first public tour in over two decades. The sculpture dates from the same year the artist painted “Guernica” and encapsulates the creative force of the ceaselessly inventive artist. When the Surrealist photographer Brassaï saw the work in during the war in 1944 in its safekeeping depot he remarked:

“It stands in one piece, a monument of strength and sovereign balance: fleshy palm, mount of Venus protruding of sensuality, voluntary thumb, fingers compressed against each other not letting any light through. And what clarity, what neatness of the deeply engraved lines that criss-cross this large craftsman’s palm and that are dominated by the line of luck that rises, rises straight up like a rocket to the root of the middle finger.” – Brassaï

The Chilean-born Surrealist Roberto Matta is represented with two major monumental oil paintings from the 1960s, a period famous for the vibrant manifestations of his political and philosophical visions. In his nearly three-meter painting “Le fond d’Héraclite,” Matta honors the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, whose maxim “No man steps in the same river twice,” serves as a springboard for Matta’s fascination with change, energy and matter. A remarkably powerful painting speaks to the limitless boundaries of science, humanity and art.

Another nominally Latin American Surrealist turned international 20th century master, Wifredo Lam is a highlight of the gallery’s presentation. In the recent market and museum reevaluation of Surrealism, Wifredo Lam has been considered one of its champions. His vibrant figurative creations were influenced by his globe-trotting career with the avant-garde generations in Paris and New York but also by his native Cuban Santeria religion. His 1954 collage shares the visual language of Picasso’s “Guernica” and evokes the realms of spirits and dreams.

Marjorie Strider’s recent return to the limelight and core of the history of Pop Art is long overdue. Dissatisfied with her male peers’ representation of women and the bland forms of minimalism, Strider pushed painting into the third dimension with her structured reliefs of pin-up models. The monumental painted construction “Girl with White Rose” plays with the tropes of romance, beauty and gender. This work to be shown at the Palm Beach Show shares many of the formal characteristics of Strider’s “Girl with Radish,” which the New York Times used as the cover image of their recent article “Best Art of 2022.”

“[Galerie Gmurzynska’s 2022/3 exhibition of Marjorie Strider] reinvigorates Strider’s oeuvre and re-imagines her role in art history as a leading Pop Artist who was omitted from the male-dominated canon.”

ChrisRWK – Promise Made. Promise Kept

0

NEW YORK CITY – Harman Projects is pleased to present Promise Made. Promise Kept, a solo exhibition by New York City-based artist ChrisRWK. This will be the artist’s first solo presentation with the gallery.

ChrisRWK creates layered mixed media paintings drawing inspiration from cartoons, comic books and his time as a graffiti writer. These paintings feature a selection of recurring cartoon-like characters that the artist has been developing over the last two decades. Centered in this cast of characters is the eponymous robot. The most iconic image in Chris’ work, the robot actually originated as a cube that began appearing in his work in the late 1990s and evolved into a television and then finally a robot around the turn of the century.

Amongst Ghosts And Shadows, ChrisRWK

The current body of work largely features mixed media paintings made with layers of paint, ink and collage heavily embedded with messages and symbolism. These messages, both seen and unseen help to create pieces that hold a great deal of meaning to the artist. In the top left hand corner of Lost Amongst Ghosts And Shadows, pictured above, the artist has spray painted “Rosebud” the iconic line referring to the childhood sled belonging to Orson Welles’ character in Citizen Kane. This text, half obscured is one of countless details that invite the viewer to take a closer look. Promise Made. Promise Kept is a highly personal exhibition. The artist states “…the past five years have been rough. I Lost my Dad, my Mom, my Mother-in-Law, my dog, six friends and have dealt and am dealing with other things. The art is my sanity. The staying busy and moving helps me process stuff. Writing a word like forever over and over is cathartic. Once I lost those people they were gone forever but only on earth. They’ll forever be in my thoughts and my heart and the work.”

Despite dealing pain and loss, the strength of love and friendship is illustrated throughout the work. Hearts as well as references to friends and family find their way into nearly every painting, reminding us to show our appreciation for those whom we hold dear.

Please join us Saturday, February 11th at 210 Rivington Street, New York, NY for the opening reception of Promise Made. Promise Kept from 6pm to 8pm. The artist will be in attendance.

Where the Heart is: Vinya Table a Place to Call Home for the Gableites

Coral Gables is the heart and soul of Miami. With rows of store fronts for the local community, Miracle Mile in the Gables is drawing not just locals but those who seek a home away from home. Vinya Table, nestled between Snow’s Jewelers and Coral Gables staple, Frattelino, is an enclave for those who seek to find their inner sommelier along with home cooked meals.

Vinya Table, offering over 30 glasses of wine, has a diverse affordable selection. Wines from 11 dollars a glass to bottles of Chateau Neuf – du – Pap for 850 dollars a bottle can be found on the menu. A true sanctuary, “The Table” offers charcuterie and wine pairings where one can savor the flavors of the extensive wine menu.

Celebrating their commitment to the wine list created by Allegra Angelo, Vinya Table offers the longest happy hour in Coral Gables. From 3 to 7 pm every day Gableites can enjoy cocktails like the Chin Chin Tonic and Strawberry Margherita for prices between four and 10 dollars. On Wednesdays live music brings flavor to the long and narrow interior of the rustic restaurant.

To start the night off at Vinya Table it is no doubt enjoyable to experience a glass of their Pierre Cellier House Champagne where a rim of truffle salt can be added for an additional fee. For the young urban professionals flocking to Miami and becoming a member of the Gableites world, the happy hour menu does not disappoint. Manchego Croquetas, Grilled Shrimp Tacos, and Morcilla Spring Rolls, filled with an onion marmalade, are just a few of the tasty treasures offered for those who seek a fun social hour.

When savoring dishes from the menu it is a must to start with the Hamachi Tiradito and the Smoked Burrata featuring rainbow beet carpaccio and pistachio-basil pesto. The presentation adds a fun vibe to the restaurant as the smoked Burrata is presented in a glass arched case where smoke is visible and then released for the nose to smell the succulent flavors of the dish. The prize of the main dishes is the Moroccan Lamb Chops that are herb-panko crusted with charred onion-baba ghanoush and crispy chickpea salad. Homemade pastas melt in your mouth and items from the Vinya Burger featuring Wagyu meat to the Tomahawk steak with black truffle butter are also available. Items from meat to a variety of fish like the Branzino with roasted pepper- coconut cream stew make Vinya Table’s menu versatile for all.

To many, wine creates warmth and good food creates comfort. Vinya Table not only nails this through their extensive selection of wines and cocktails along with their versatile yet delicious menu, but it is their presentation that gives this venue Gabelite charm. The Tableside Tiramisu dessert is perhaps the most fun presentation at Vinya Table. Fresh French press coffee is poured over the bread base of the dessert leading to an organic and crisp flavor of coffee followed by a layering of fresh cream. The dessert is created tableside and is truly tasty. The staff at Vinya Table aims to please. Excellent service creates a feeling of home.

“It doesn’t feel like working when you are with wine,” says Evelyn Vanegas, restaurant manager.

With a world of sommeliers and servers presenting some of the finest food in the Gables along with a wonderful world of wine, Vinya Table’s new and more advanced second location brings true flavor to the heart of Coral Gables and Miami. It is truly home for all those who seek social hour refuge or Gableite glamour.

Cavalier Gallery Presents Select Works From “Give Us Our Flowers”

(New York, NY –January, 2023) – Cavalier Gallery presents works from Guy Stanley Philoche’s newest series, “Give Us Our Flowers,” paying homage to black historical figures and everyday cultural figureheads. The works will be part of a group show on view at Cavalier’s brand-new gallery space at 530 West 24th Street from now through February 25th.

The “Give Us Our Flowers” series was born out of heartbreak when Philoche’s best friend passed away suddenly in November. After attending his funeral, he saw how loved his friend was by so many people, but soon came to realize that many were not able to express their love when he was alive. This sparked inspiration and out of tragedy Philoche created a body of work that honored those unsung heroes that have paved the way for the future generation.

The series spotlights icons such as James Baldwin, Jackie Robinson and Lena Waithe painted in black and white, surrounded by a simple presentation of daisies, Philoche’s mother’s favorite flower. Everyday figureheads can also be found in the collection with a mother and her two sons and a young girl jumping rope with a shirt that reads My Body, My Choice, My Rights.

“After the funeral I couldn’t stop painting my friend’s portrait and started thinking about others that had never received their praise,” said Philoche. “The people in my works are painted in black and white, allowing for the viewer to focus on the subject matter at hand. I wanted to make sure to call out specific people like Lena Waithe, but also different archetypes like the mother who is working every day for a better tomorrow for her two sons.”

A dedicated philanthropist, Philoche has made an unwavering commitment to help his fellow artists since the devastating toll the pandemic took on the art community. Throughout the last few years, he has purchased over 150 works of art from up-and-coming global artists, creating The Philoche Collection, which he continually adds to each month. Philoche’s talents have been recognized most recently by Essence Magazine for the new series as well as CNN, People Magazine, Reuters, Time Out New York, NBC New York, Palm Beach Daily News, the Kelly Clarkson Show, the Tamron Hall Show, and more.

The group show will also feature works by William Nelson, Adam Umbach, Jim Rennert, George Rickey, Mark S. Kornbluth and Terry O’Neill.

Works will be on display and available for purchase at Cavalier Gallery at 530 W 24th Street. Exhibition hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 AM -6 PM and by appointment. For those interested in checking out the exhibition outside of open hours, appointments can be scheduled by calling 212-570-4696 or email:  art@cavaliergalleries.com.

About Guy Stanley Philoche

Haitian-born modern artist Guy Stanley Philoche immigrated to Connecticut when he was three. As the middle child of three boys and coming from a family of sports enthusiasts whose passion he didn’t share, Philoche turned to art as his calling. While remaining close to his Haitian Roots, Philoche was the only son to buck his culture’s tradition of the entire family living together and struck out on his own – first attending Paier College of Art and then Yale. He now lives in New York City. For the past 15 years, Guy Stanley Philoche has been attracting international attention with his work and his impressive roster of solo shows. As an artist, Guy’s palette is strong and sophisticated. His layering technique has created a body of paintings so richly textured that one can hardly hold back from reaching out and touching the canvas. In fact, it is the artist’s intent and wish that the viewer will follow their desire to reach out and feel the different textures of his canvases. His work is for the viewer’s pleasure, to be fully enjoyed from a tactile standpoint, and he has varnished the canvases for exactly that reason.
