Spotted at United Ukrainian Ballet’s ‘Giselle’: Mario Lopez, Nigel Lythgoe and Cheryl Burke

0

The West Coast premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s new Giselle performed by the United Ukrainian Ballet (UUB) at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa indeed carries a strong political message. Ratmansky, the choreographer, highlights the significance of hope and resilience within the context of the dancers’ experiences as Ukrainian refugees as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

By emphasizing that “Hope is what the United Ukrainian Ballet is all about,” Ratmansky acknowledges the transformative power of art and the ability of the UUB dancers to find solace, strength, and unity in the face of adversity. Through their artistry, they have turned their pain into something beautiful and meaningful. The performance aims to convey their strength, honesty, pride, and determination to the audience, inviting them to experience the emotional depth and resilience embodied by the dancers.

In this way, the performance becomes a platform for the United Ukrainian Ballet to raise awareness about the plight of Ukrainian refugees and to showcase their artistic expression as a means of overcoming the challenges they have faced. By presenting their story through the universal language of dance, the UUB seeks to foster empathy, understanding, and solidarity among the viewers, transcending political boundaries and resonating with the audience on a human level.

This blend of art and politics in the performance of Giselle serves as a powerful testament to the transformative potential of the arts in bringing attention to important social issues and inspiring change.

The evening was a benefit for BlueCheck Ukraine; the organization created by Liev Schreiber, to vet, verify, and fund Ukrainian-led frontline organizations providing humanitarian aid to victims of the Russian invasion.  The evening was made possible by Elizabeth Segerstrom, Ratmansky’s longtime friend and major supporter of his work at the American Ballet Theater and through the Henry T. and Elizabeth Segerstrom Foundation.  Mrs. Segerstrom attended the evening surrounded by friends and hosted a reception following the opening night.

Born in Leningrad, Ratmansky’s father is Ukrainian and his mother Russian.  He was raised in Kyiv, where much of his family still lives. So, for him, the conflict is personal.

Elizabeth Segerstrom offers these words, “Despite insurmountable obstacles, these dancers, who have all been displaced because of this tragic conflict, have remarkably come together to create a world-class company which demonstrates the transcendent power of the arts. This evening is dedicated not only to these dancers and their spirit but also to you, whose presence tonight demonstrates your commitment to the cause.”

Elizabeth Segerstrom’s words highlight the extraordinary resilience and determination of a group of dancers who have faced immense challenges due to a tragic conflict. Despite being displaced from their homes, these dancers have managed to unite and form a world-class company, showcasing the transformative power of the arts. The dedication of the evening extends not only to the dancers and their indomitable spirit but also to the audience present, acknowledging their unwavering support and commitment to the cause.

A star-studded audience, including Cheryl Burke, Veronika Dash, Mario Lopez, Nigel Lythgoe, Gleb Savchenko, and Montana Tucker as well as Los Angeles Ballet’s Artistic Director Melissa Barak and Chair Jennifer Bellah Maguire, joined the Artistic Director and Founder of UUB, Igone de Jongh, who said, “Tonight is an historic occasion, made possible by the Henry T. and Elizabeth Segerstrom Foundation through her tremendous generosity and humanitarian spirit. Elizabeth has brought us here to this magnificent theater, to share with you the transformative power of the arts.”

ABT’s Christine Shevchenko starred the title role on opening night, with a cast that also included Alexis Tutunnique, Elizaveta Gogidze, Oleksii Kniazkov, Iryna Zhalovska, and Denys Nedak with the Pacific Symphony under the baton of Gavriel Heine.  Ratmansky explained, “This Giselle is an interpretation of one of the greatest romantic ballets in the classical repertoire. The end is surprising. Traditionally, the hero is left alone with his pain. Our ending gives hope.”

After the final curtain for Giselle, and rounds of standing ovations, UUB returned to the stage with Ukrainian flags as Pacific Symphony played the Ukrainian National Anthem. When the curtain rose again, Ukrainian soldier Oleksander Budko Teren took the stage performing Airlift, choreographed by Emma Evelein. Both his legs have been amputated after a tragic war incident.  Now fitted for prosthetics in the US (thanks to the Revived Soldiers Ukraine Foundation).  UUB invited him to attend their performance in Washington and he fell in love with the company. UUB dancers surrounded Teren as the emotional crowd at Segerstrom Center for the Arts rose to their feet again when the curtain fell the final time.

Mikail Akar, a remarkable wonderkind and prodigy in the art realm, is causing a sensation at a mere age of 10. This exceptionally talented individual has already established himself as a genuine painter, with his works reaching global acclaim and gracing the walls of countless international exhibitions. Captivating admirers of contemporary art, Mikail’s vibrant creations draw inspiration from renowned figures such as Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Gerhard Richter.

His second New York exhibition “UNBELIEVABLE” was on display at Modus10 – Rolf Benz Flagship Store in SoHo. It contained 23 works on canvas and paper of various sizes and in the price range of $8,000 – $16,000.

Mikail’s art was included as part of the ArtExpo New York Fine Art Fair 2023 at Pier 36 and in recent days Mikail held a live painting session held at dawn at the iconic Empire State Building with graffiti artist Luca.

In addition, Mikail currently has an exhibition at the Grand Hotel Schloss Bensberg, Germany running until May 2023 and in another project Mikail recently custom painted the hood of a $450,000 Rolls-Royce motorcar.

About Mikail Akar

Born in 2012 in Cologne, his career began by chance. For his fourth birthday his parents gave him a small canvas and finger paints simply because they wanted to give him an alternative gift to usual toys he already had. Mikail began his prolific artistic journey at this exact moment, and he now paints at his Studio in Cologne, Germany.

His talents were seen in a first painting and his parents fully encouraged him to continue his work. Watching Online video tutorias together Mikail learned certain painting techniques and soon the little artist began to paint nonstop. His introduction into the art world launched shortly after with adult artists wanting to preview his work more and more.

Mikail has already held several exhibitions in cities across Germany including Cologne, Dusseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, where international art collectors soon became aware of the young artist. This led to other shows in Vienna, Zurich, Istanbul, and New York City.

As a visual artist, Mikail does not want to limit himself to canvases. He recently painted a wreckage part of the Airbus 310, which was exhibited in Cologne/Bonn Airport, and will be exhibited at other international airports in the future.

The young artist also has a philanthropic side and has gained notable attention with his work being auctioned for good causes such as the “Art Helps to Give” campaign. One of his most recent collaborations has been with the mineral water brand, Gerolsteiner with the Mikail Akar Artist Edition, where Mikail’s art was printed on more than 17 million water bottles.   Additionally, the painter has also launched charity events in Turkey to help local people during the earthquake in 2020 with the Civil Protection authority AFAD.  He has also painted numerous times together with German celebrities such as the Höhner, Laith Al-Deen, Manuel Neuer or Peter Maffay and has appeared on German TV show “Klein Gegen Gross” moderated by Kai Pflaume – one of the highest rated entertainment shows in Germany.

Other projects which Mikail is currently working on include painting a series of three classic cars which will be going on a roadshow in the near future. In addition, he is working to create a 165 ft. (50 meter) long canvas painting for a secret project.

Despite his adventures as a creative artist, Mikail has remained a normal child, going to school in Cologne and is fully supported by his parents and two siblings.

The Second Annual Hamptons Walk with and Shawn Dromgoole and Co-founders of Jetti Fitness

0

Shawn Dromgoole, the founder of We Walk With Shawn, the not-for-profit that unites and empowers people to connect regardless of race or circumstances.   Shawn has once again teamed up with Sag Harbor’ residents Joyce Shulman and Eric Cohen, the co-founders of 99 Walks and Jetti Fitness  to host the Second Annual Hamptons Walk with Shawn on Sunday, June 4th, 2023.

Together the trio will be inviting people to come together at Long Beach Sag Harbor to bring support and encourage community.  There is no cost to participate in the 45-minute walk; participants just need to meet on the Noyak/south side of the parking lot at 7 AM.

More About Shawn

As a young black man, following the murder of Trayvon Martin, Ahmaud Arbery and other black men, Shawn was afraid to walk the streets of his gentrified community in Nashville, TN. A post he made on social media led to nearly a hundred neighbors showing up to walk with him. He decided to create similar walks as a powerful way to connect people, discuss important topics, and empower black and brown people through interaction and understanding.

Next up was a raft of national media coverage everywhere from People to CNN and the Washington Post and, more recently, on Rachel Ray and elsewhere. The walks continued and as a result, Shawn became convinced (as I am) that one of the most powerful ways to connect people and build community is for neighbors to walk together. He calls it “the walk sound” — what he describes as “the chatter I hear behind me when we are walking. That’s the sound of new relationships growing and communities being built.”

Shawn is on a mission to bring this power to as many communities as possible and he will once again be our guest for the Second Annual Walk with Shawn Hamptons weekend, June 3-4.

About Joyce Shulman

Joyce Shulman is the co-founder and CEO of 99 Walks and Jetti Fitness, two wellness and walking lifestyle brands each on a mission to forge connection and get a million women walking their way to better.

Throughout her personal and professional life, Joyce’s regular walking practice has been her key to managing stress, fueling creativity, and maintaining her health. After discovering that the research bears out all that she knew instinctively, Joyce and her husband, Eric Cohen, founded 99 Walks and Jetti Fitness to help women experience what recent studies have shown: walking can improve decision-making and executive function, combat depression, increase creativity and literally add years to one’s life.

In addition to being the “Pack Leader” at 99 Walks and Jetti Fitness, Joyce is the author of “Walk Your Way to Better, 99 Walks that Will Change Your Life,” a TEDx speaker, podcaster, and consultant for companies and women’s groups, where she shares her expertise about the power of authentic communities and the transformative impact of a consistent, intentional walking practice.

Joyce received her Bachelors in Business Management from the University of Maryland and her JD, Cum Laude, from St. John’s University School of Law. After law school, she spent more than a dozen years as a New York City lawyer before trading her legal career for an entrepreneurial journey focused on what mattered to her most: family, community, and empowering women to get healthy, happy, and chase their dreams.

She calls Sag Harbor, New York home where she lives with one husband, two teenagers, and a very sweet dog named Moose.

Hope for Depression Research Foundation Draws Over 275 Teens To Inaugural Teen Race of Hope

0

(Manhattan, NY – May 24, 2023) – The Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) inaugural Teen Race of Hope united more than 275 teenagers and their family members, friends, and teachers on Sunday, May 21st at Pier 40, Hudson River Park.   The goal of the event was to raise awareness about the crisis in youth mental health in the U.S. and fight the stigma that still surrounds mental health.

The Co-Grand Marshals for the Race were Grier Henchy, the 16-year-old daughter of Brooke Shields, and Hayden Lucas, who was one of the creators of the event.  Grier is following in her mother’s advocacy footsteps, as Brooke Shields herself was honored by HDRF with the Hope Award for Depression Advocacy in 2009.

Soul Cycle’s Stacey Griffith, mental health advocate and social media influencer, spun her signature playlist as DJ for the race.  The music reinforced the energy of the crowd as they waited for the Race to begin against the backdrop of New York Harbor, downtown Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

Grier Henchy said: “Today is all about the message of hope and how we can make it safe to talk about mental health.  It’s really important for every teen to know it is okay to not be okay – and to reach out for help.”

Hayden Lucas, who also served as the Chief Student Ambassador for the Race, is a junior at Dwight High School.  He came to HDRF with the idea of a Teen Race after he had run in a recent Race of Hope in Southampton, NY.

Lucas said: “HDRF has supported the idea of the Teen Race from the beginning. Thanks to them we are able to run here today to spread awareness and work towards ending the stigma about mental health.”

The state of teen mental health across the nation is urgent.  Last year the surgeon general declared a national emergency in teen mental health.  More than one in three high school students reports feeling persistent hopelessness, a 40% increase since 2009.  Suicide has become the second leading cause of death for teens ages 15 to 19.

“These staggering statistics underscore the vital importance of uniting New York’s school communities to better understand the signs of depression and how to talk to teens about it,” said HDRF Executive Director Louisa Benton in opening remarks before the Race.

HDRF Founding Chair Audrey Gruss also took the podium before the Race to acknowledge the teens for their energy and activism on the anti-stigma front.

Gruss said: “The Teen Race of Hope is primed to even be bigger than our Race of Hope and this is because young people know how to make change. All of you, the young people in our community, are going to be the ones who can make a real difference. That is why this race is so important and that is why it’s going to be the most talked about event in New York.”

The Teen Race of Hope is a 5K (3.1 mile) U.S. Track and Field-certified race.  At the starting gun, participants set off to complete the 3.1-mile course starting at Pier 40 Hudson River Park and continuing along the esplanade with beautiful views of the Hudson River.  Everyone sported HDRF’s signature sunshine yellow color with matching caps and t-shirts.

The event, which raised $35,000, marked HDRF’s first Race of Hope in New York City and the first one to be youth focused. HDRF also has held an annual Race of Hope in Palm Beach, FL and Southampton, NY.

At the close of the Race, Audrey Gruss presented awards to the top finishers and to the top fundraisers.  First prize for Best Male Time went to James Knox, and first prize for the Best Female Time went to his mother, Sarah Knox.  The award for Top Fundraising Team went to the Dwight School team.  The award for Best Costume went to the Sunshine Girls, who wore matching yellow outfits with flower sunglasses.

Second place for Best Male Time went to Cesar Hernandez and second place for the Best Female Time went to Luisa Cavalli, third place for Best Male Time went to Isaac Jeffrey, and third place for the Best Female Time went to Dawn Brewer.

All Race participants received a signature yellow shirt, cap and finisher medal. The first, second, and third place winners received medals based on the winnings. The costume contest that was held during the race encouraged all participants and supporters to show up in their best yellow ensemble, with the winner Sunshine Girls taking home a $100 bank card.

The Teen Race of Hope was supported by local student teen ambassadors including Hayden Lucas, Chief Student Ambassador, Mia Abramson, Marni Arons, Alva Carlston, Hannah Diker, Sophie Higgins, Abigail Kidd, Tanner Klipstein, Ruby McKillips, Jeremy Negrin, Summer Nelson, Sophia Rossi, Noelle Saldana, Gui Sequiera , Ai Vy Shulman, Andrew Wetenhall, Amelia Wetenhall.

HDRF has been a leader in research since 2006, convening top brain researchers from different universities to pool data and expertise to find new and better treatments for anxiety and depression.  HDRF also works to raise awareness of depression as a medical illness and to educate the public about the facts of depression and remove the stigma that still surrounds it.

ABOUT HOPE FOR DEPRESSION RESEARCH FOUNDATION (HDRF)

HDRF was founded in 2006 by philanthropist Audrey Gruss in memory of her mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. Today, HDRF is the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on advanced depression research into new and better treatments for the illness. The World Health Organization has declared depression as the leading cause of disability worldwide, and yet conventional medications today are outdated and do not fully work for 50% of patients. The mission of the HDRF is to spur innovative neuroscience research into the origins, medical diagnosis, new treatments, and prevention of depression and its related mood disorders – bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder, and suicide. To date, HDRF has provided more than $50 million through over 200 grants for breakthrough depression research that promises to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented. Currently, HDRF has a potential new class of medication in pilot clinical trials at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Columbia University, and Stanford University. HDRF is also funding clinical trials into other novel therapeutics and diagnostic tests at Johns Hopkins, University of San Diego, and the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
