NEW YORK CITY – Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to
present A Sign of Times, a pop-up exhibition curated by AnneLaure Lemaitre in which 17 text-based artists reflect on our
times.
The past few years have been marked in part by a direct
challenge to the value of words and the meaning they convey.
We’ve seen language exponentially used with little regard for its purpose or substance. Yet, words do not only facilitate communication and clarity to others, but also the ability to detangle inner thoughts
and make sense of personal experiences.
In this moment, solitude and the scarcity of human touch have made words as a means of understanding one another—and the world we live in—more important than ever. However, we’ve also been challenged in our trust for their ability to be an authentic vector of clarity and truth.
A Sign of The Times presents artists whose practice includes lettering at its core with the simple premise of freely exploring their relationship to this peculiar moment. Ranging from traditional media to digital animation and weaving, the resulting artworks span from intimate self reflections on isolation to outwards social commentaries. Their unique approaches offer earnest and personal contemporaneous takes on a confusing chapter still in making.
The gallery will be open by appointment only. In order to ensure the health and safety of visitors and staff, please note that masks are legally required for entry. To schedule an appointment, please click HERE.
The exhibition will be on view Wednesday, December 9th to Sunday, December 13th at 2 Rivington Street, New York City.
