Beyond the Line: Don Hershman’s Evolution Debuts in Tribeca Solo Exhibition “= OUT OF LINE =.”

Art enthusiasts in New York City have a major opening to mark on their calendars this fall. Award-winning San Francisco artist and podiatric surgeon Don Hershman is coming to Tribeca with his highly anticipated solo exhibition, = OUT OF LINE =, opening Thursday, October 1, 2026, at One Art Space.

The exhibition brings together four distinct bodies of work created over recent years: The Art of Code Switching, I Am a Barn, Urban Abstraction, and Still/Still. Rather than a simple retrospective, = OUT OF LINE = functions as a cohesive narrative of artistic evolution, tracing how a single fundamental element—the line—can expand into a rich visual language of structure, emotion, and identity.

Tracing the Journey of the Line

Across barns, cityscapes, quiet still lifes, and striking portraiture, Hershman uses repeated and overlapping linear marks to build color, rhythm, and atmosphere across four key chapters.

Hershman’s exploration began with structure in his 2024 series I Am a Barn. Drawing inspiration from the weathered planks and beams of rural barns, these early works transformed agricultural buildings into meditations on resilience, shelter, and memory while establishing the line as his core visual element.

Moving from rural landscapes to urban environments in his 2025 Urban Abstraction series, Hershman shifted focus to cropped fragments of city life. Pavement, garage doors, graffiti, and textured walls became dynamic studies in tension and layered rhythm.

Turning inward that same year with Still/Still, Hershman applied his distinct linear style to everyday, domestic objects. In works like Garlic and Still Life – Serenity #5, familiar forms are transformed through line and color into serene, meditative compositions.

In his portraiture series The Art of Code Switching, Hershman applies overlapping lines directly to the human figure. The result is a compelling exploration of perception, identity, and the ways people navigate visibility in different social spaces.

The Dual Life: Precision Meets Artistic Freedom

What makes Hershman’s perspective particularly unique is his dual career: he is both a painter and a nationally recognized podiatric surgeon.

Born and raised in New York City, Hershman developed an early love for art through trips to city museums as a public school student and his parents’ encouragement. Influenced early on by masters such as Matisse, Picasso, and Klimt, he maintained a consistent drawing practice throughout his surgical training and career before fully devoting himself to painting in the early 1990s.

His background in surgery heavily influences his studio work. The precision, structural focus, and decisive confidence required in the operating room translate directly to his canvas. Working from photographs, Hershman layers line and color over initial drawings, striking a delicate balance between realism and abstraction, structure and emotion.
